A good job in another town or a bad job in your own town

In the past I had a great job in another town. It was a great job in every way. I found the work interesting and rewarding, I had great co-workers and salary was also okay. The only problem was the location. I had to commute every day and I felt that I wasted a lot of time that way. When I got a job offer in my own town I decided to accept it. It was nice to work in my own town, but unfortunately that was the only really good thing about that job. It was much more stressful than the other job and there was a very cold atmosphere among my co-workers and many problems between my co-workers and the managers. If I am in the same situation in the future I would choose to keep the great job and commute every day. What would you choose? Would you be willing to commute if you had a great job in another town? Or would you choose a less attractive job in your own town? Why?

Had I been in your position, I would have stayed in my job in another town. Yes, commuting everyday is painful but for me, that is more bearable than working close to home but feeling more stressed. Assess your feelings, your goals and the pro's and con's. Only then can you decide which is best for you and for your career as well.

I agree with that. I learned that from this experience. I chose the job in my own town because I thought that it would be nice to work at a place that was close to my home. It WAS nice, but unfortunately it was the only really positive thing about the job in my own town. The job in my own town was very stressful and there was a very bad atmosphere among the co-workers and among the co-workers and the leaders, and I was happier in that first job that I had.

I would choose "A good job in another town" because as you mentioned that it is rewarding. When you transferred in other company, there is a good offer for you regarding the salary and experience. Commuting is just a challenge on how dedicated are you in your work. My experience regarding your topic is that I have my first job in my own town but it is not challenging and just monitoring. The workers there were not professional. They will just communicate with me (like I am not a person) if there was a problem. So I decided to change my job to a more challenging work but the consequence is that the traveling hours is between 1hour - 2 hours. I chose to leave my previous job and now, I am happy and learning new things about my field. :)

It is great that you have found a job where you are able to learn new things and a place where you feel happy. It sounds like it was the right decision to leave the other job. I did the opposite thing. The first job that I had was in another town and the second job that I got was in my own town. I left the first job because I was offered a similar job in my own town and I thought that I would enjoy the second job as well, but I quickly discovered that it was very different from the first job and I was much happier in my first job. In the future I would prefer to keep the good job and commute daily

I would definitely commute if i was happier at that job that wasn't in my town. You can't always settle down for a place that you're not happy at because it will just make you miserable and everyone else around you miserable. I used to travel 20mins to work every day but then a position for the same job i have came open in my town so i took that position and now just drive 5 mins to work. I still like my job but the people at this office our full of drama, i hate it but I just stay away from it and do my work then leave when my shift is over. The other facility there wasn't as much drama as there is now.

It is nice that you only have to drive 5 minutes to get to work, but I understand that you don't want to be part the drama and just stay away it. I would have done the same thing. Today I think that commuting is better than giving up a good job in another town. When I did that I did appreciate the fact that I was able to walk to work instead of catching the train, and I also saved some money since I didn't have to pay for the train tickets, but the job that I had in the other town was much better in every way and I regretted giving it up.

I think it is important to have a good working atmosphere and I would not mind commuting a bit to get to work if I really liked the job, but a long commute can really take a lot out of you, so I guess it really depend on how long the commute was and if it was by train for by car, also how stressful of a drive it is. If it a nice drive with very little stop lights it would not be so bad, but I don't like sitting in bumper to bumper traffic so if that was the case the long commute might not work out so well.

Any job in my home town. I would commute for a DREAM JOB. Not just a good job. Jobs are jobs, not our life.

Hey thanks a ton for your interesting topic. Well i think it entirely depends on a person's present needs. If he is need of good money and status then he is going to move to a new city. But if he is desperate to stay in the same city then he should go with the less interesting job and with due course of time and experience, he can switch over to a better job in the same city. I would have definitely gone for the second option as i cannot stay without my parents. What say?

Yes, it would be an option to take the less interesting job in the same city and after some time when you have more experience it might be possible to find a better job in the same city. I think that it also depends on the area where you live. If you live in a small town where there are very few job options it might be neccesary to take a job in another place, but if you live in a large city with many job options it is probably easier to stay there and find a job there. At the moment I work in the neighbour island, because there is a lot of unemployment on my own island.

I would take the bad job in my town. Part of the reason that you get a job is that it works for you. Commutes are not always easy. Gas can be an issue if it spikes as well as danger. The more you are on the road; the more you have to worry about traffic dangers and being far away from home if you have car trouble. You are more likely to be on time the closer you are to work, and last but not least, you will get home sooner.

I would rather commute to a great job than have a nearby job that is really unpleasant. Actually, I would rather just relocate to be near the great job, provided that it was located in a nice area in which to live. Great jobs do not come along all the time. When you find something that you really love, I say that you hold on to it if it is at all feasible to do so.

Considering that where I have lived all of my life, I have been stuck with a ton of terrible jobs, should an opportunity come up for a decent job, something that is better than what I have been dealing with, I will not hesitate to take that job, even if I have to move to another city in order for me to take it. As much as I love my hometown, I have to put my needs first, and since there is so much going on here, good and bad, it is time for me to move on. I can't wait for things to get better, and I am tired of fighting through the negative stuff just to take one step. As soon as something better comes up, I'm outta here.

Hello Porcospino, I don't know how far it relates but it entirely depends on the mind. If you love your job you will never think about the strain to attain it. If you think of your environment and comfortness you need to suffer in some other way. No matter how far you go or how hard you work the only thing that is considered is that your mind needs to be set. If I were in your state, and if I find peace and interest in my work, I would love my work. Moreover, I will love to go places other than my town. Just my 2 cents, Have a great day always, Cheers.

Honestly I prefer job that's not too far from my home. I don't like spending time too long in the road because at the end of the day I will be to tired to do any thing else. I never really dealing problem at work so nu clue what to do beside find a better job in the same city. I always feel heart warmer to receive a kindness from stranger, its made you believe the value of human being. There are still so many good people in this beautiful earth.

Hi Porcospino, I could imagine how hard this situation is but if I were in your situation, I would choose the job in other town which gives me satisfaction. Most of our time awake are spent on our job so it really is important that you are enjoying the things that you do and the environment that you are in, otherwise, it'll be really tiresome and even toxic. Why think of the long commute when what you are working for and who you are working with are well worth the travel, right? I would much rather endure the commute to work than endure the entire day doing something I am not really enjoying. I hope this thing will be sort out for you soon. Have a great day to you

I believe that it depends on personal priorities. I would rather choose to commute if I would have a great job in another town. In today's job markets, a good job is much more important that other luxuries. And there is a chance that you can try from other location and wait there, till you find a good job in your preferred location. But if you are location specific and then, you are having less chances to get another good job in a specified time.

well I would also make sure that despite the commute, the salary was higher because we must take into consideration the cost of driving far everyday. But part of me says that even if it did cost a lot to drive there, it would be worth it to avoid the stress and unsatisfying job of my home town. It sounds like that job was really good so having to drive and spend time driving there shouldn't be an obstacle.

i have had such an experience but the other way around so it was rather easy for me to move from the bad job in another town to the good job in my town. ;) but anyway, if i am with a good company but far from my place.. i would still consider the things i have to give up or sacrifice in moving closer. but then if i know the place has a cultural background i won't be comfortable with.. i know i would not leave the good company and good friends in the other town and just try to see if i could settle in that town rather than suffer miserably in a company near my place and not be happy with what i do, i won't even last longer than a couple of months.

I work as a teacher. Ten years ago, I worked in my hometown and later I moved to another province, far away from my hometown because of the salary that is much higher than I could get in my hometown. I think it is worth it and even now after so many years I have never regretted for my choice. Instead, I am happy with it and will continue my work here. But I go to my hometown for summer and winter vacations every year. That is an exciting time for me as I can meet all of my family members during the vacations. Thanks for your discussion, Porcospino.

I would choose a job which relationship to co-workers are good. I want to choose a job which can really reward my effort, or a job that you will grow as an employee, a job which can enhance your skills more, not a job that will teach you not follow steps, not to undergo process, a job not to teach you how to tweak things just to make it appear right... Anyway, unfortunately, am not lucky enough for that! I guess this is life, all I need to do now is bear it, as long as it pays me, but am not contented, I will grab opportunities if they will knock my door!

I have always been one who moves away from my own town a lot. Especially when I was young and single, it seemed that I was never really too attached to my own town. So I would always go for the best job with location would always be the last thing I'd be concerned with. I've had jobs which I had to commute or which I had to relocate. In my case, I don't think I've ever settled for less attractive job just to stay in my own town.

Great job in another town as it would mean I could also move and live on my mind with some peace and quiet as well. I'd need some public transportation though. I wish the best for you in whichever you choose if you are ever in the same predictament in the future.
