Self Improvement

Greece

I have decided at last to stop teaching people English and try teaching myself Greek. This is my goal for the next 6 months. If I am successful enough by then to make myself understood I will be encouraged to carry on. New Year resolutions need not be confined to January 1st. Isn't it a better idea to have some flexibility in our goals and make them when we need them. Perhaps then we will have more chance to succeed?

Learning a new language is a mator goal. I used to have that kind of goals a long time ago. Now it eems that my goals are smaller and they don´t have more than a 2 or 3 month´s span. I have forgotten to ask myself what will I be when I grow up. Stil, there´s always new to learn every day, no matter how small. I hope you learn greek and many other thing and that later on you find them useful.

Thank you for encouraging me and for sharing your thoughts on the subject of resolutions. Even if it is tough to keep them it would be sadder not to try.

Hi friend, good to know that you are interested in Greek, there is nothing wrong in learning a new language and you will learn it soon based on your interest. All the best

There are two factors necessary to be successful in learning a language, the first is to be interested and therefore motivated, and the second is to enjoy the learning process. This is the hardest thing for me because I am learning it alone, a class or a teacher with patience and a sense of humour would be wonderful.

Of course, New year's resolutions are usually broken anyhow. It is best to set a goal for something you want when you want to do it.

That is a good goal you have set for yourself. And I agree with you that we should not just resort to having our resolutions being started on January the 1st and we should try to work on those goals when they arise. I think that is another thing I would like to do. I'd like to learn more spanish, I know that it would open up other job opportunities for me and be able to assist customers where I currently work at. Because I run into a lot of people who don't know English and only Spanish. Being able to communicate with them would be awesome. I also work with a lady who only knows Spanish and it would be nice to be able to speak with her too. I live in a place were majority people speak Spanish. I also I would like to brush up on sign language. I know quite a bit of sign language, but maybe just not enough. So that is another goal that I have for myself.

Good luck! :) I also tryed learning Greek in the last 1-2 years, but without discipline I made little progress. Still, I am proud with what I learned and I will do some courses soon to improve it. Now I use livemocha.com, it's an easier and more entartaining way to study. It's a beautiful language in my opinion (and also country and culture).

I wish to improve my English skills and be a good writer. I am still working on it and wish to become a serious writer and write a book- one day.

I don't make new year's resolutions myself. I find that if I have to wait for the new year in order to attempt in making something happen, then I wont succeed at all.. Good luck in learning Greek! How do you plan to learn it?

That's great combedale, me too love to learn Niponggo maybe will have to do self learning through net and some books here. It's bit hard to follow new years resolution, you are right start having resolution now so that when January came part of resolution was already done. :)

You raise a very commendable point. Research has shown that few,if any, people manage to attain, and maintain, New Year resolutions. It is much like the happiness and joy we are expected to display at New Year and Christmas. I'm sorry, but these times of year can be very miserable and lonely for many people and this contrived, seasonal feel-good factor is highly offensive and impractical. So it goes with resolutions: why should we organise our lives, lemming-like around a traditional 'go-for-it date' in the calendar. Surely it's better to organize such challenges when WE feel naturally inspired and better able to face THEM. We should start trying to move Mohammed to the mountain rather than the, impossible, obverse!

This is a great goal to teach your self Greek. That seems like a hard language to learn. Why Greek? Who do you teach english to? Good Luck

Well great to hear about your tryst to learn Greek. Yeah of course new year resolutions can be made flexible. Not all people on earth stick to their new year resolutions. This will help us achieve our goals in a more better way. I wish to learn German and French in the coming days. What say?
