Dear Mylotters Some of you may aware about the interest of wearing ornaments by Indians, especially South Indians. The people in Kerala state (South Indian state) have a custom, even if they don’t have enough to eat; it is a must to wear gold ornaments. But in other states of India do not have that much interest on wearing ornaments. Now I am living in North India and here there are lots of people from Kerala living and they too wear gold ornaments. There is much theft going on especially on snatching gold chains, the culprits are coming in bike and snatch the chains and sped away without giving any movement o react by the victims. Considering these things, ladies decided to change their habit and start to wear artificial ornaments. But the pity is that, there is a strong belief among robbers, if the lady is from Kerala, her ornaments must be in gold. Last week the artificial chain of one lady snatched, by thinking it is on gold. How to educate these robbers… ladies changed their habit ..so please don’t waste your time any more? The souring price of gold is inspiring the robbers to attack frequently. How about the robbing tendency in your place? Have you changed any of your habit as safety measures?

Hiya sreekala, Ages ago Indian ladies in England would wear real gold chains too as you mention but now I think that they are more likely to be artificial ones while they are outside of their own house thank goodness. Its a great pity no one can be safe wearing what they want now. Gold is very expensive here too sreekala it has gone up by five times the price it was in a year so this makes for more robberies. In fact if I ran a Jewelry Shop I would be afraid of Robbers but I think that they should have Police patrolling around those places they have a right to make a living too. Jewelry like you mention hardly exists as such. There is only one place I know in Calahorra only one that sells Jewelry that is like Indian Jewelry at all. Such a beautiful Shop but when I am with my Husband I don´t get much time to stop there because of the parking problems. Jewelry in that Shop is stunning and everyone stops to look because its not just about Watches which I love to look at too its your kind of Jewelry well as I said very similar. If I have a chance one Day I will go in and see what more they have. As you said artificial Gold is a must as this kind of robbery is always very frequent here too.

Hi angel, Happy to see you dear, hope everything is fine with you. Running a jewelry shope is really risky, but you must know there are lot of jewelry shops in our native place. I really wonder how they managed to make the security of their goods. There is a jewelry shop near to our residence here, they have fitted camera outside the door of the shop, even if the shop is closed, the owner can see the happenings in front of his shop through this camera by sitting at home. Definitely he is spending much money for the safety of his valuables.

dear sis What a smart idea. Here in our country, everyone learned this lesson already (wearing fake accessories) so, robbers now resort to snatching bags wherein cash, phones and other valuable things are inside. But, these robbers didn't know that- most people are still smarter than they are. Most people knows a lot of technique- they don't put valuable things inside their bags (shoulder bags or backpack) some use shoppers bag or ordinary bag and put their valuable things with other things- like what they purchase from food store or from the market. lols People knows how to trick robbers too- but robbers also came up with new techniques all the time...duh

Dear sister, The younger generations is more on fashion and like to change their ornaments one everyday basis that also according to their dress (colour). Gold is too much costly and fake ornaments are good choice to manage with everyday need. But the older generation is much on gold still. I think gold snatching is more attractive just because of the higher price. They can earn enough with one attack. In case of bags, there is no surety on the things inside.

Hullo Shree! How are you? What you say is absolutely true. All of us from the south tend to wear gold chains and this is a potential threat for our safety .I have also heard of many such cases ; in fact I personally witnessed a chain snatching while travelling in a train. I was sitting on a side lower berth , with my little son on the upper berth. We were travelling alone ;suddenly there was a huge commotion and I saw a man assault a lady opposite and run away. She was decked with a number of chains but thankfully we came to know they were all artificial.I too wear an artificial chain during travel and keep my heavy mangal sutra chain at home [if someone is there at home] or keep it in my handbag and wear it later. In our place also we hear of these incidents and whenever I go out alone, I wear an artificial chain.

Hi dear, I am fine and hope you too. Now it is a big threat in this place. Last week, a lady managed to catch the chain snatcher and people gathered but the snatcher pulled out his revolver and all the people had no choice left and allowed the snatcher to go with the chain. Now the police personnel are on guard and if they see any lady wearing gold ornaments in road, they request the ladies not to wear gold ornaments. One of my friends told me this thing, the police officers told her, if you wear gold chain again, I will come to your office and talk to the officials. She removed all of her ornaments while going on duty. Police personnel told that they are watching south Indian ladies especially as they have the habit of wearing gold ornaments.

Hi Sree! Seen your discussion after a long time. It is really disgusting to hear the news that gold ornaments are snatched in day light and Police remain a mute spectator. Robbers have field day and they do anything they like. Once my better half's chain was snatched in the evening rush hours in a market and when we reported to the Police, they did just nothing instead threatened us to take back our complaint. Robbers need to be educated, you are right.

Hi deepak, It is really pity to know the truth, robbers have the external support from police. There may be a mutual understanding among them. I would like to add, they may be honest personnel too but they are rare in numbers.

Just like Hindus in Bali who tends to wear all their jewelries on ceremonies.... We have that crimes from time to time and women are now very conscious of wearing real gold in public. There are lots of fake jewel ornament shops now for us to choose to... no more insecurity...

Sadly women are more conscious on their beauty than their security. Now the fashion world is leading them or forcing them to wear artificial too, as there are more varieties on cheap rate.

But the ladies in this place are addicted with this habit. Now they are forced to change just because of the threat. Many attacks already happened and many got physical injuries too.

I've always had the habit to be very careful. And also I don't have anything for anyone to rob, actually.. perhaps my car, be it ever so humble. But I don't drive all that much and not very much at night alone or in more dangerous places. I do make more sure to lock all doors of our house, but I've been doing that for a long time too. Not a whole lot to rob here either.

I really don’t like to wear much ornament. Now my ornaments are in bank locker, earlier it was with me still I never prefer to wear it. It is always good if we can be safe ourselves with the entire valuable we have.

Hi Sree dear, I'm here finally like what your son had mentioned before Yeah, quite some time never participate in your discussions. Everywhere is the same and there are always shameless bad eggs live upon others by robbing valuable ornaments Deal to this it's not wise to wear authentic ornaments walking in the streets or in any other public places. The gold necklace of my husband 's third sister who lives in the adjacent country was snatched the time she was boarding bus home. It's quite difficult to educate robbers as they are so used to earn their daily living easily by robbery I suppose. Yeah, to avoid being robbed wearing fake ornaments is the best way to prevent undesirable loss of valuable jewelries as well any hurt of the body might happen the time encountering those inhuman culprits. I think the pedantry thought of wearing real gold ornaments of showing status should abandon, for it's no longer suiting for the complicated social nowadays. And everyone should learn to protect oneself from any loss in valuable jewelries. Happy posting and have a nice day dear

Hi dear, Happy to see you in my discussion again. You have not participated 2-3 topics, I have not started many in between or was not active much here. There is no issue on late reply, but I worry when the regular/special one keep away from my topics without any reason or reason unknown to me. I hope everything fine at your end. I stopped checking intentionally anybody's profile here to avoid hurts. I have seen your profile picture and name in home page at time as some updates from mylot. Regarding the topic, you may not know the habit of South Indian people, if they don’t have to eat anything at home they won’t worry much, but without ornaments, they can't think... now the younger generation changed much, I must admit that. Some people still wear the ornaments by thinking, keeping the same at home is not at all safe, better to wear it. Yes, the robbery at home also increased sadly. Take care and have a great weekend dear.

The robbers in this city either target houses or else the wallets and purses of women. It is sometimes in the wedding season specially near marriage halls that chains are snatched. While travelling to office everyday I ensure I dont wear any jewellery and dont keep too much money in my wallet. The money is scattered in different pockets in the purse for more safety.

As the price of the gold is so up, snatching a chain is so profitable and I think that may be the inspiration of the robbers in this place. The robbers in your place may not be greedy. I prefer to keep my money in my bag without using a separate wallet. It is not easy to take money from my bag. But Once or twice I lost money from the outside pocket of my bag, I learnt lesson from there.

I do not understand the reverence for gold, although I saw a television show about it recently. We are much the same here only it's not gold and the thing that you absolutely must have changes month to month! You should have more policemen on the streets to catch these robbers, punish them quickly and sternly. I'm glad the women changed their habits but they changed them to protect their goods, not their lives. If they would quit wearing the gold or the imitations they would not be bothered. Their houses may be robbed but at least there they have a chance of protecting themselves. Human pride and conceit is so destructive.

I think I have to admit, the ladies are giving importance to their valuables than their life. Yes, the house is not the safe place to keep the gold or valuable things, as day time theft is going on in an increasing way.

Shoplifting in our country is a big problem. Stores lose a lot of money to these thefts. One of the biggest things that are being stolen lately is prepaid cell phones. The manufacturers of these phones have now made them so unless they are scanned at the register there is no way they can be activated. Still people were still stealing them. So the stores put up signs and the manufacturers wrote the message in big letters on the packages that the phones were useless unless they were scanned at the register. You would think the criminals would get the message but they are still stealing these phones on a regular basis.

May be in that place, gold ornaments are not on use like here. Gold is too costly at present; it may be inspiring robbers to focus more on gold.

Hi Sree, even in my country the chain snatchers are very active. Almost everyday i will heard someone's gold chain being snatched. Not only that, even nice and branded handbags are being snatched by them. Nowadays, my family members prefer not to wear gold ornaments. We had changed to wearing white gold ornaments. So far, it is safe to wear white gold ornaments than the gold ornaments. Sometimes, i even wear silver ornaments for a changed since nowadays their designs are very beautiful as well.

Hi myfb, It means the culprits are all over in the world. On snatching the bags, we may face more difficulties, as many have the habit of keeping their ATM cards, home keys, identity proofs etc in their bags. Two weeks ago there was a robbery in somebody's house, and robber has taken the certificates too along with the goods in the bag. The owner wanted to submit it for his office and he was on tears as he didn't understand what to do at the last moment.

If gold must give beauty to the woman then the woman cant be very beautiful. lol Truly, see how little those Hollywood stars wear when they walk up to accept those Oscars. I think people need to view things in more mature way. I agree gold is good as investment. But whoever heard of gold in lockers being insured. After all, we remove and place them in again, dont we? Exchange Traded Funds are a better way to invest. Artificial gold colored chain is ideal if one desires it so much. But as allknowing pointed out, even that can prompt people to threaten. Traditionally, people did give their children some gold, as a security in case she saw any hard times. But if gold is going to defeat the same purpose, it had better not be worn, isn't it?

Hi Vandana, Have you ever get a chance to attend a wedding of Kerala people. If yes, you may realize how much importance is there for gold ornaments in their life. Its ok if the bride is wearing too much, but whose who are participating is also wear more than enough, as it is a trend. Again it is ok, as they are in a wedding function. But when you visit a temple (you supposed to be there for praying) is it necessary to wear lot of gold ornaments? However, I must agree, the situation in other states are different, only Keralaites are this much fond of gold. Yes, it may be a security in hard time, same time it is a big threat of their life too.

Robbers are really everywhere. Here in our place, anyone would wear accessories which is fake or not. Robbers tend to adjust. Most of them are intelligent. They know whats true or not. All we have to do is to take extra care. We would not know. They will really make a way to rob.

at least these robbers are not going to file a legal lawsuit that they were cheated The fact is that robbers need to rob and would rob even if they are sure that you are wearing fake ornaments. It is sad that despite the so called efforts by the governments, nothing substantial has been done. These robbers exist everywhere in our country.

Hi sree Females are always a soft target for the chain snatching gangs and especially the south indian females even when they are wearing artificial jwellery. this is due to the perception that still the traditional women use only gold. It is better to always be alert so we can be safer, more so these days we get a lot of designer and fashionable artificial jwellery. Those who are allergic to non-gold, can find many variety in bentex and thread-made things. Even i wear my Mangalsutra on a silver chain. take care..

Dear Viju, It is difficult to change the habit once we follow from our childhood. But now the safety is more important. I know one lady from Kerala, who do not wear any ornaments. I thought that she is a north Indian, but once she came to me and talked to me in Malayalam, I realized it she is from Kerala. I asked why you are not wearing any chain, she told me, once somebody snatched a gold chain of one lady infront of her, that day she removed all ornaments and never wear any after that incident.
