The vital elements in modern life

This early morning I woke up and opener my laptop while I turned the TV on. TV had a bad image and internet was unexistant. I called the company and had the tender answer of those machines that ask you to wait forever. So I didn`t know until later that the optic fiber had... Of course I did not understand. All I got was that I would have to wait noone knew how much until it was fixed. I know I`m addicted to internet and to mylot. JEEEZZZ!!! I didn`t know what to do with my morning. It`s raining so there`s no garden. Fortunatly it lasted only a couple of hours. But I started to thik about how tied we are to these gadgets. Why don`t I listen to music and dance by myself as I used to? Why don`t I read or reread a good book? Why don`t I make some goodies in the kitchen? I sit all day in front of the computer. Shame!!! It`s antihuman! I should get a more complex life. Do you have those thoughts once in a while? Or do you accept all the time what technology has brought us (the good, the bad and the ugly)? Share!

I find that I spend most of my day in front of the computer as well. I don't know what I would do if the internet went down. There are a few games on my computer and I guess I could just get in the car and take a ride so I could listen to the radio or something. I also spend time doing things like schoolwork, but if I can't access the online classroom, then I can't find out what I need to do for the week. Oh well...

I can't believe how fast fall came on here. It is in the 40s (F) and I finally had to turn the heat on in my apartment and break out my long sleeve shirts because it is cold in here to me. I'm glad your tests turned out ok. I hope all stays that way! Have a great weekend!!!

Thanks, Debbie. In a couple of hours I`ll go to have lunch with my Mom next door. I`ll take her to her doctor tomorrow and we have to make some arrangements. Later in the day I`m going to one of my grandsons` birthday. Diego is leaving infancy: he is turning 12. Time goes by. Have a good weekend and don`t catch a cold.

Today was one of those rainy days when you want to just stay cozy in bed. I had to cross the city yesterday for my mammography and ecotomography. It was worth it: everything was allright. But as I have become very sedentary, each time I must go to far from home, I come back very tired.

As much as I'm addicted to Mylot myself I try to divide my time between activities. I have accepted the good the bad and the ugly of it all. I spend time in my yard cleaning it and maintaining my garden. I spend part of my time cleaning the house and going shopping. I also spend time watching my favorite tv shows but that is at nightime. The TV does not usually go on during the day. I also love to read but can't seem to find the right time to do that. I rater write then read these days. If its a rainy day I then would not mind spending the day on mylot or playing games on facebook. This is though the problem of today with gadgets the kids do not go out and play anymore. This is why we have an obesity problem in America. They are either in front of a computer, laptop or tv. When I was growing up we didn't have computers or gadgets. We would have to do chores and then go out and play all day. I know if I had a child at this time I would divide their time to having playtime outside and maybe and hour and no more then that on computers unless they had homework to do.

You are right. The technology is here to make our life easier. With the internet we can have access to a lot of information, we can learn many things, share life experience. It is all can ease our real life. When I have no internet, I don't know what to do with myself. So, I take the dog, take care of him, I do some tasks around the house and I just hope I will have the internet once again. It's like all of my inspiration comes from the internet sometimes. That's a shame.

Hi lelin, I usually have other activities, but today it was early and raining. I thought I`d stay in bed a while longer. I couldn`t do any gardening, the house is clean so there was nothing for me to do but try to save some gas by staying in bed until it was not as cold. When I was small, we did not have any of these things in which we rely so heavily. Life was harder, yet simpler. I, as a child, did not mind much the cold. When I was little my grandama forbid us, girls, to wear any sort of jeans or pant so we played out with our bare legs. We read a lot, did lots of homework, learned how to embroider while we listened to the radio.

Technology definitely has a downside-- but in my situation, the internet is a literal life saver. Since I can't go out and I can't deal with people, cyberspace IS my life. The internet has put all the developments I missed at my fingertips, so I can keep learning and re-learning things that have happened between 1976 and 2010. The internet has gone down on me a few times, and I am able to cope with it, but never for more than a day or so. After that, it's extremely difficult, and at times impossible to cope with. I agree with several other who responded that the internet and dependency on it are becoming major issues in America, especially as it impacts our kids.Young people not only lack the physical stamina they had when I was young, they also lack social skills. Obesity is half diet, and half siting around. The sitting around, in my opinion, is more dangerous, because then the whole body gets out of shape. If kids and adults exercised or engaged in regular manual labor, it would be harder to get obese in the first place. The other part, diet, is bad for many people. Serving sizes in restaurants are huge now, and meals that are heavy on the fats, starches and proteins but light on the veggies don't help. I work and live online, but I am not fat-- because I eat lots of fruits and veggies. I am in terrible shape, however, because my various conditions have reduced the amount of physical labor or exercise I can do. I guess you just can't win sometimes. Technology, in and of itself, isn't good or bad-- it's what you make it.

I know how hard it can be to break an addiction, or even just a habit. When it comes to exercise, my docs are always on me about being in bad shape, even though my weight is fine. Unfortunately, even the farm chores are very difficult due to pain and being out of shape in the first place. I can understand why your docs want you to lose weight, but I can't imagine turning down birthday cake either :-) I guess for both of us it's a case where just getting out and walking around is what has to be done. The farm is big enough for me to get in a good walk without ever leaving the property or meeting anyone, and I took a small walk this morning. Since I have a stress test coming up next month, I have to walk twice a day to get ready-- it will help, I hope. My Lot is very important to me as well, the people here are people I can deal with. I know I have an addiction, but in my particular case the cure would be far more harmful than the disease. If I were you, I would have my cake and walk as often as possible, and stick to eating lots of veggies and fruits :-). Fortunately veggies and fruits are good foods that taste good, at least to me.

That's a good way to stick with it-- all food tastes better when you share it with someone you like-- and exercise is more fun too. My other half used to walk the farm with me once a day when he was here, but he winters in Tucson running our mine there, so I haven't got a walking buddy. It gets lonely sometimes, but my docs get all over me if I fail my stress tests. Of course, they are all pretty young, and not in the kind of pain I'm in-- and finding a doctor that also does pain management is very hard here these days. All the pain management docs are booked up months in advance, and I won't be seeing the one I'm going to try for another 6 weeks or so. I suppose it could be worse-- if I were in Tucson, I would probably still be waiting. The last time I was there, it was an average 6 month wait for a good doctor that was a g.p. and also did pain management. I'm sure you'll drop a few more pounds-- it's not like you aren't trying.

I wasn`t so addicted until last year. I started chemo for a lymphoma and my way of helping it was not to catch any bugs as my defenses were very low. That meant months of solitude. I could not have my daughters and grandchildren over because there was always someone with a cold and that could be bad for me. So I had my house, my garden and my laptop. Mylot friends were invaluable then and I feel very close now to some people I have never meet face to face. But once an addiction settles in, you are caught by it. I will have to make an effort now to lose weight and to do more exercise. I have been seated or lying down for a long time now and one gets acostumed. Sedentary life makes you eat more too and you don`t spend as much energy. One of my doctors told me he expected me to go to the next control in one more month with 4 kilos less (about 8 pounds). I have reached maybe half of it, and this is birthdays month in my family. How do you say "no" to a piece of birthday cake?

The good thing when we are accessing the internet was to learn more things and earn at the same time. This is not so called anti-human because we choose to live that way.

Professor bhaiya: it is good to be in mylot when we can. it is good you are able to help other needy people for research and studies. Health is wealth. For example yesterday night --possibly due to cold weather outside -- around 2 am or so I got up and had neck pain. then I changed bed and slept to some extent well. I think after 50/60 such problems are quite common and we have to live with them. Internet has come to take most of our time --here in abroad -- cable tv, telephone, computer, cinema --everything is thro internet only and hence we sit before computer most of the time. During other times I play with grand son and also do some household works to give work to muscles.

I`m so glad that you have other things to do, Bhuwar. I feel that all this chemo I have had has made me dumb and I can`t even read much, much less write something. So, for me, it`s passtimes that are easier now, such as TV watching or playing online. I cannot even do any of the crafts I enjoyed doing when I was younger as my joints hurt. To tell you the truth, I don`t like old age much Take care

I am experiencing the same right now marguicha. I am trying to find out ways on how I could increase my earnings online setting aside other activities that I should be doing right now. I know when the facebook mania started, I was never tempted. But when the idea of earning money online came to me. That was the time that I started spending more time in front of my computer.

I know that the amount of money I earn online is an amount I could save by spending my time otherwise. Even growing some veggies so that I can have some to eat is more rewarding. When I stay late at night, I have to use more light and heating in Winter.

Marg, since my home was installed with the internet connection, i see myself got hooked to my computer whenever i am free from my offline matters. I read news, checking my emails and visiting earning sites whenever i go online. I had stopped my interest into baking cakes and cooking new dishes. Now, i am spending more time into my computer than in my kitchen. Luckily, my hubby not angry with me for not cooking new dishes for quite a long time. Maybe next month, i should take some days break, to start looking for new dishes and cook for them to eat. Hope you are doing fine...

Like you, I have to say that I am completely addicted to the internet and the computer. I don't think that I would be able to live if I didn't have access to either of these things. For me, I grew up with technology and I believe that is the main reason that I wouldn't be able to live without it. However, I also have to say that I think another of the reasons that I choose to spend more time on the computer is because of the fact that I don't experience the same kind of drama with the computer as I do in my real life.

Now a days our whole life is depend only on technology. If one day no light means no wash the cloths because washing machine run only when line is exist. We cant do anything like old people they do all work by hand but we are only want to use machines. If no mixi means no chattani. Without mobile and Computer no body can want to leave. But the bad thing some people using this all technology is in wrong way.

The problem with this technology is that it is addictive. Now this is proven scientifically. It`s a pity as this is used instead of real living and can lead to many health problems as our body changes in millenia, not in a few years.

I have thought about this from time to time. Although I am somewhat sorry to say that those feelings do not tend to last long for me. I live in such a rural area, the internet right now is my only entertainment. We'd had to get our TV shut off because unable to afford that bill. Now I just have myLot and some other sites to keep me busy. I suppose I could be doing other things like reading and the things you mentioned. I haven't come to that point where I feel like I need to break away. Those times will come in the future though when I realize how much I miss doing those certain activities.

I feel that there is a world beyond the Internet. Although I am on-line working every day, on occasions that the broadband has been down, I have been OK about it. At first, I found it to be an annoyance, but then I got on with other things that need doing around the place and it felt good. If you really want to get on with other things that you used to do, I wouldn't say that you need to quit going on line, just allot a set amount of time, like 2, 3 or 4 hours to being on line, and commit to that limit. If you commit to something, it is important that you always totally keep that commitment, or you will just be setting yourself up to quit your intention for time doing other things. As a therapist, I have dealt with clients who have had all sort of addictions, and commitment is really the only way out of it. It works, if you are prepared to keep all promises and commitments that you make with yourself and others.. Ask yourself if you feel you are wasting a big part of your life by being on the computer too much, and if your answer is yes, commit yourself to do something about it. Ask if you willing to do something about it. If you don't feel willing, then you are not ready to commit, so forget about it and just continue doing what you doing now, until you are willing. But never forget not to make a promise to yourself unless you can guarantee that you will keep that promise. You already realize that there are things that you enjoy like music, dancing, cooking etc... Good luck with his. _Derek

What happened was a special occation. I was tired, it was cold and had nothing better to do than to stay in bed a little bit longer either watching TV or using my laptop. Yet it was all down and the cold rain poured outside. I quit smoking a few years ago after smoking for 50 years. So I know what is to have an addiction and to get out of it. With smoking, I still say I`m a smoker who is not smoking.

I love to read and always have 3-4 books in progress when the computer or tv are unavailable. Actually, I have a problem deciding whether to read, crochet, cook or myLot as I can't do any of them in combination with another. Right now, I need to be reading as I have a library book out that is due back on Tuesday and I've already used the maximum amount of renewals on it.

¡Hola amiga! I`m here in Chile, 67 years old as you are, and equally addicted to the devilish machine as you are. I`m sure that cutting up on this addiction can be as hard as quitting smoking. I did it, but I still say (after years) that I`m a smoker who is not smoking. Yesterday it was raining and the weather was very cold for this time of Spring. Internet had to choose this day to have a problem Have a nice day!

There are exceptions to every rule and I am that exception! I line up alternatives for 'what ifs' and believe me I get going with whatever else is lined up so that I don't have to start the ball rolling thinking what I should do when my gadgets do not behave. Sometimes I am grateful since I can catch up with pending chores which I would have put off just to be in front of the idiot box!!

The one reason for success of internet, mylot is that we can communicate whatever we want immediately without bothering whether there is a person to listen or not. Somebody will be there to read, listen and post. Internet is used for many purposes and that is why we are before computer most of the time-- email, youtube and other videos, audio, photos, newspaper etc. what is your idea on this.
@marguicha (215711)

You are right in part, but I`m old enough to think that face to face communication (and looking at each other`s eyes) cannot be replaced, even by webcams. There`s a body language that we miss if we don`t have the person there.

Haha :D the feeling is mutual.. In times like this, when my internet connection is bad or unstable I am a bit sad too! :D But honestly, I am thankful when I don't have connection because I am able to divert my attention to other things. Like doing scrapbooks, new arts and crafts of maybe staying still at the Computer even without internet. At that, I can do slideshows, layouts etc or other stuffs needed to be done but I can't finish because the moment I open a browser- I forget about them :/ lol =)) So yes.. technology is good and very useful if we know how it should work for us.
