Do you still bother with your spelling?

I was browsing an online store this afternoon since I am about to re-open my online shop. One thing I notice is that the spelling of a lot of items are wrong and it sometimes takes time before I realize what the person is describing about their item. With this new online shop that I was browsing, I was looking at the plants that they were selling online since I do love plants and one item listed was "bargated". I had to search online to try and find what kind of plant that was and found no results, only to realize that what it was a variegated plant. I thought "bargated" was a rare specie, it wasn't. It was just misspelled. For those who have online shops, do you make sure that your description plus the spelling is right? Or do you just post as long as you feel that it sounds close to the description? Happy Sunday everyone!

It really saddens me to see how bad people's grammar and spelling are. People don't even capitolize at the beginning of a sentence or proper nouns. It is sad to see where the language is going. I always try to check my spelling and usually miss something. But atleast I try.

We all but human and do make errors, and I am not sure if you deliberately use "capitolize" instead of capitalize. I search for capitolize and the result is capitalize. Is this a typing error because i to a in the keyboard are far apart. Just curious because the topic is about misspelling. Cheers!

I usually let slip some typos and since English is not my first language, I do admit to a lot of grammar mistakes. But not when I am posting stuff to sell online. If I misspell something, chances are people might not buy my items. Thanks for the response.

It is a misspelling. Should be a instead of the o. Glad you noticed this.

I care about my spelling though for some, I cannot change anymore like here in mylot. I used to have mistake with "their" and "there" and some simple (I think) typo errors. But to the extent that the whole word is misspelled, I don't think so. I have an online shop too and most of the time, I am an online buyer too. Misspelled words serve as a caution for me not to buy on that shop. I don't know why but I just lost interest. Happy Sunday to you too!

Simple typos where the words don't lose their meaning for me is acceptable, since English is not our first language. But posting an item on a "sounds like" basis is a no-no for me. I can still see a lot, especially with jewelry where they spell dangling with two G's (danggling), but that is acceptable since you know what it is. Thanks for your response.

I have to say if I were buying online from a shop, and there were things for sale from different buyers with similar prices, I'd go for the person who bothered to check their spelling. It looks really unprofessional for people to have blatant misspellings in their listings.

I do go for sellers who take time and effort in describing their items. It makes you feel secure as a buyer that the seller really knows what their item is. Thanks for your response.

I am not a native English speaker too, that's why I take extra care with my spelling so as not to look stupid in case someone notices. Thanks for your response.

Spelling is very important, or people will be confused and misleaded, like in your case :) I do not own an online shop, but if I did, I would check that everything is right looking and nothing misspelled, becouse that doesn't seem professional at all.

I have never operated any form of online shop, but of course I have seen many when searching for various products. I have often been quite appalled by the level of spelling and punctuation used on such sites, which certainly does not give the impression of a professional establishment. Poor spelling and grammar has increased vastly over recent years, but it is hard to credit that someone would create an online shop and not bother to check something so important.

I do my best to spell everything I type online is correctly typed as i don't want to get into the habit of spelling things wrong.A good reason for this is because i am at university and don't want to start making lots of spelling mistakes in my assignments.Though im not one of these people who judge people for making spelling mistakes and i don't make posts people having a go at people for having poor spelling.

I don't actually have an online store, but I do a lot of online shopping, and I had seen tons of misspelled words or incorrect grammar. This usually discourages me from buying the product. As for myself, it sort of had become habitual on my part to check the spelling of the words I use. It's been my line of work for a couple of years now, editing transcripts and stuff. I actually use the online version of Merriam-Webster, unless I'm looking for an informal word. I admit though that I still commit a few typographical errors due mostly though carelessness.

I do care about spelling esp in my own language. Also if I would buy something online it would annoy me if articles or services are spelled wrong. I would also doubt the seller. I don't think the question is if you are STILL bothering about your spelling but the fact is everybody is on the internet and emailing now. Also those people with less education, those people who would have never wrote a postcard or letter if internet/email would not exist. I think if you want people to take you serious you can at least make sure that what you write on the internet (esp if it's in your own language) is spelled correctly. If you can't do it use a spelling controler or ask someone else.

A lot of spelling is going down the proverbial toilet right now. People use text speak as part of the language. They don't emphasize it in school anymore either so I see a lot of phonetic variations that are just wrong. The problem is that if you don't spell things correctly the things that you write can become downright confusing. The example you use is a case in point. I do make an effort to spell things correctly. I make plenty of mistakes but when a friend points something like that out the me I try to correct the problem quickly.

You're right about people not minding the correct spelling anymore due to the text generation. But there are still old school people like us who know how to use the spell check if needed. Thanks for your response.

Hi, Yes, I do care about my spelling and it bothers me a little that I keep on misspelling lots of words, I have to admit it's embarrassing sometimes especially when it keeps happening so often. One time, my bosses wife asked me how to spell Heights, I told here H I E G H T S but then I realized it was wrong, and when I told her I spelled it wrong she laughed at me and said " you get confused as well?" I said "it always happen" then she said "don't worry your not alone". Sorry for the story telling just trying to make my point. Happy mylotting :)

Yes, we all do that at times, but the important difference is that you made a mistake, which simply makes you a human being. The factor that really appals me is the total lack of interest in spelling displayed by an increasing number of people. This is even becoming quite prevalent in business, where presentation should be paramount.

Helo, That's true. Sad to say but I think some people just don't bother much as long as they know that we understood what they were trying to say.

Knowing the correct spelling and correct usage of grammar is but a basic thing to do. We must discipline ourselves , educate it , So shameful , basic things we don't know. We should strive to be perfect , even in little , basic things only. Starting right will yield a bright future.

I would think that anyone who has an online shop would take extra care to proof their descriptions/tags to ensure that they are spelled correctly. Not only are they missing out on potential hits/site visits, but it looks unprofessional -it demonstrates a sloppiness and lack of care by the vendor. There is too much good competition out there for me to want to buy from such a lazy, unprofessional person.

Poor spelling...not just on websites, but everywhere, seems to be a disease that's gripping the world lately and I hate it! To me there's no excuse for it. So many spelling mistakes, which are simply acts of carelessness as anybody could decide to learn to spell if they realise they're not good at it, are so severe that like you with this website, it is hard to understand what people really mean. It seems that the more avenues of communication which become open to us in the modern world, the less communicative skills people have. Poor grammar and punctuation annoy me too.

I am not maintaining an online shop at the moment, but proper spelling has been important to me ever since I was a child. As an adult and a writer, if I post anything and later find a typo it drives me nuts.

I'm an online buyer and seller. As a buyer I found one of the best ways to find an incredible bargain is to look for misspelled items. These items often get under bid and over looked by the general population. As a seller I often spell correctly and incorrectly in the title. This will get more lookers on my site. I never let free character space go wasted. It is amazing how many people misspell even common words. Is it gray or grey?
• Philippines

Gray and grey are both accepted. I guess one is the English (UK) spelling and the other is American English. I just don't know which is which.

I don't own an online shop but if I'm looking to buy something I wouldn't buy it from somebody who can't take the time to check their spelling and grammar. I don't mind a few mistakes but really bad grammar and spelling is not a good reflection on the store owner. It shows carelessness, lack of really interest. So I wouldn't be apt to buy their products. And "bargated" - I never in a million years would have figured that one out.

I know it's bad to laugh at people's mistakes but I couldn't resist the urge because it took me quite some time to guess what "bargated" was.
