Halloween Costumes for Women Too Sexy?

I have a 16 year old daughter who is really taking in the world these days and she started a conversation with me the other day about how sexist it is that pretty much the only Halloween costumes they have for women are either witch costumes, Nun costumes or sexy sleezy costumes. I have to say she is pretty correct about that. There are plenty of not sexy costumes for men, but when it comes to women's costumes (the kind you purchase) they are all really revealing. I have always found this annoying as well, it seems like if you want to be a bit modest you have to be a witch, a nun, or make your own costume. Thoughts on this?

I personally have nothing against sexy Halloween costumes but I can understand the point you are making.I would have thought that there would be a non sexy/revealing version of most costumes.Because not everyone wants to wear a revealing outfit and in some cases it isn't appropriate. For example a woman with strong religious values may not wish to wear revealing outfits and there are surely girls who are big for their age so need to wear women's sizes but too young for it to be appropriate to wear revealing outfits.I just think consumers should be given the choice and i'm sure it would still be profitable for the manufacturers.

You have made some very valid points. Of course manufacturers will tell you they make what sells, but there should be more choice. I almost feel like Halloween as an occasion has been taken away from the neighborhoods and the children and dropped down in the bars with the adults.

You certainly do make some very good points. Plus what about women like me who are over 40 I don't really think it is appropriate for me to go around flashing what the lord gave me. I would love to go to a Halloween party and dress up but what they sell these days would make me embarrassed, I wouldn't even dress that way when I was young.

Rae, you need some fancy long gown and go as a Dancing Star. . . as in the show. You could also go as Mrs. America, I could see that easily. Ballroom dress plus a sash. One costume I did for a client at one of my disability jobs was the Statue of Liberty. I had what had been a "Grecian Lady" outfit from a musical at church. It was made of pale aqua curtain material. Tied the waste with a belt, made a cone with I do not remember what for the torch. One of the other staff got a light green foam visor from the crafts section at Wal Mart and cut it into points and the client wore it. It was really very good.

I will have to say that your daughter is extremely perceptive. Of course, we always loved making our own costumes. It could be something as simple as leggings and a long purple or green T shirt, then safety pin matching balloons on it to be a bunch of grapes. What would your daughter like to see as a costume. She could be a doctor. . . just pick up a set of solid color scrubs at a thrift shop and a toy stethescope. Yes, women are much more than just their sexy parts.

Remember what Katryn on our other site did last year. A suit and briefcase--Secret Service Agent.

I totally welfare. However, there is some merit to making your own, and that's the fact that if enough people do it, they can put the designers out of business, and the message will be received.

yep, that is true, I judged a halloween costume contest once, and the winner was a little girl dressed up as a tablecloth with plates and cups and fruit sewn onto the sheet her mother used. I though it was so original.

There is a lot that I could say about the sexualization of girls within this society. However, I have had a long day, and I'm not quite up to going into all of that tonight.
On the issue of Halloween costumes, there are some more modest pre-packaged women's costumes out there. A quick look at Amazon reveals options such as Snow White, Roman empress, Venetian statue, Wicked Queen, Red Queen and quite a few others.
I'm a bit baffled by your comments about witches and nuns, though. Are there really non-sexy witch and nun costumes for women? The ones I've seen tend to run in the same direction as the Little Red Riding Hood and Alice in Wonderland costumes--short, tight, low-cut and typically paired with thigh highs.

Interesting.. I wonder who invented the female costumes or came up with the idea they have to be that sexy? BTW witches can be sexy too, they are surely not always looking ugly and old. Perhaps it's "normal" by now female always have to look that sexy? Anyway if it comes to that I would make my own costume. Something original anyway.
