As many of you have seen, Hurricane Sandy made landfall in extreme southern Jersey. She caused widespread flooding and power outages, but worse, she's taken away entire portions of the shore.
Atlantic City has reportedly lost 2000 feet of their boardwalk. And it is unknown how much damaged it did the the pilings that were holding many of the beach front properties at this time.
Seaside Heights, the setting of Jersey Shore, is HEAVILY damaged. Part of the fun pier is washed out to sea; a roller coaster previously on land is now surrounded by water; parts of the town are submerged with either sea water or SAND. The sea is so far inland that they've lost REAL ESTATE!
Hoboken is under considerable water; people are being rescued from their homes with a front end loader.
Jersey's been the subject of many jokes (Oh, we should just get rid of Jersey, Jersey drivers suck, The entire state should just disappear, are just some of the ones I hear around here), but I cannot imagine that anyone would wish a disaster of this magnitude on anyone! But from what I've seen on the news, so far, everyone is vowing to rebuild. I admire them-they loved their homes and just want to rewind back to a time that was pre-Sandy.
I'm a Jersey native myself. I've been to many of the towns that have been hardest hit by this storm, and it makes me cry every time I see the news. I can't even begin to imagine how to start tackling this mess, but we're a resilient bunch-Jersey folks WILL rebuild. It just won't look the same as before.
Have you been affected personally by a natural disaster? Please share how you started over.

I have so many that I know live in New Jersey. Why would any one want it to disappear. A horrid thought really. While on the subject how far is Larkspur (Dayton) from where Sandy visited?

The men that made those comments to me are very small-minded individuals that live in an area where they breathe a lot of concrete fumes daily and have no imagination. I just roll my eyes-they haven't seen a quarter of Jersey! It's not all interstates and houses pushed together (that's central and north Jersey)-there are mountains, lakes, the shore (or there was until last week). They should try visiting there some time.
I'm not quite sure where Larkspur or Dayton is exactly; the bulk of the flooding happened on the eastern coast of New Jersey. To get to Ohio, you have to cross Jersey AND Pennslyvania; I think maybe 6 or 7 hours of straight driving.

Thanks. Not all of New Jersey could have had the impact of Sandy. We are told even the upper Manhattan remained unscathed.

I listened to about 12 hours of HLN news on Monday about the storm. I was worried about some of the Mylotters that I know live in that area. I am glad I have know heard from most of them. I was certainly saddened to hear about New Jersey and 12 other states that were effected. I think New Jersey will show its steel when it comes back in full force. Good luck to you all!

I'm a Jersey native; I moved away a couple of years ago, but I've been in nearly every one of the affected communities. I can't get over how the coast was just decimated in some areas-I can't even begin to imagine how they'll start next year's summer season!

I would not wish this disaster on anyone. I am aware that Jersey is often joked about, but this is no joke and no laughing matter. Where I live we could be hit by tornadoes, or stricken by ice storm. The drought this year has been a type of disaster, but not nearly so apparent as what Sandy has delivered this week.

Looking at the images on the TV last night, I immediately thought of that film 2012 and the utter devastation that happened in the Breezy Point neighborhood in NY. This is something that I would hope that no one would wish something like this on anyone else; as many problems that my ex and I still have, I try to remember that he is first and foremost my daughter's father and anything that affects him will affect her. The storm has crippled an entire industry-vacationing at the Jersey shore, but there was ONE small benefit: MTV cannot tape in Seaside anymore!

Which part of Jersey are they from? To see it during the daylight is unreal...I still have family and friends there, though none of them lived on the shore or up north. I was in tears seeing the images-most of the hardest hit communities were ones I've been in at one point or another in my life. Anyone from Jersey is a pretty tough cookie though-glad to hear your friends aren't giving in!

I was born & raised in Brooklyn, NY & it was quite heart breaking to see places that I know & have been to destroyed by hurricane Sandy. Like New Jersey I know that they will do their best to repair the damage that's been done & repair the other places where the damage was not as bad. Whomever is saying those awful things about New Jersey should be ashamed of themselves. These are people that have lost their homes & other places they love. Or worse they may have lost their loved ones. I am keeping everyone whose been effected by hurricane Sandy in my thoughts & prayers.
