Paranoid or realistic thinking?

I see these Doomsday Preppers shows on tv and I wonder how realistic is this? Are we due for a solar flair or a CME(coronal mass ejection), geological change, extreme weather change, financial demise, government takeover, or some other happening. What are your thoughts on this?

I do not watch them on TV. I believe that anything can happen at any time. Some of the things they are predicting we would not survive. I actually believe the financial crisis will be what happens, with possible food and cash shortages. I have food on hand, I have stuff on hand in case of a tornado. No big deal.

Celtic, a side note, people who have grown up in the depression or have family that did can easily become hoarders. . . I guess any major crisis like that. I really dislike being owned by stuff, although that is how it looks here. @Ambie, I do not want to be Adam and Eve or Noah, I would rather go to Heaven than face some of the aftermath of a disaster on Earth. I am pretty sure I could do okay with a run of the mill disaster that knocked out power and cut supplies for a while, but the solar flare or nuclear type would be totally different. Best to have an eternal plan.

I think that people who lived through the depression or were born into a family with parents or grandparents that knew the depression you learned to stock up and be prepared. I learned how to stretch a dollar and how to cook beans and rice and things that stretched and went a long way. Its only smart to stock up and be prepared.

I have never seen any of those shows. Don't care to. I think in some cases, the doomsays people are just wacko! I am so not all people who prepare for doomesday are like that,I am sure. I don't think alot of the things people are worring about will happen. If they do not for a very long time! I just think these people would be better off worring about the present and not the end of the world!

I'm certainly glad you think so. I don't think this Mayan calendar thing is real. I mean that something is going to happen. But i do feel that something could happen at some time and it would be smart to be prepared with some stored food. I don't think having a family meeting about survivor and emergencies twice a year is being to fenatical either!

Why would you hate to be in their family? Negative force? People that are proactively learning and teaching their loved ones to survive incase there is such a emergency. And not necessarily a world war but a solar flair perhaps that would knock out the electrical grids and the larger transformers. If those go it would take a long time to repair them and the newer cars have computers in them and these would be damaged so the trucks that transport food across the country would be out of commission. What then? You'd better hope you have some food stored.

Always talking about the worst? Focusing on all the things that can go wrong and never living and enjoying the present? That sounds like it would create some serious anxiety. It's find if you feel differently, but I'm personally not going to anticipate the worst and start to horde food. Why? I couldn't afford to do it even if I wanted to. The fact that they can afford to do it is great. Some of us don't even know how they're going to make it into next week.

I live with a bi-polar daughter and grandson with ODD so my live is filled with stress. And when weird things happen you tend to expect them.

hi celticeagle.
i've watched some episodes of the show and i must say that i'm impressed with the preparation that these families have done. honestly, at this point, i've only watched the show for entertainment purposes and nothing more. i think the show preys on all this 'end of the world' talk.
i would understand a considerable amount of preparation about certain scenarios that might be deemed as catastrophic but i personally wouldn't go to the same lengths that these families have done.
cheers and happy mylotting!!!

i agree about being prepared to some extent and i do think that i'm taking steps to do so.
i've actually looked into preparing basic emergency kits for myself and my family. will actually chat more about this. might start a separate discussion thread.
anyway, cheers and happy mylotting celticeagle!

I am glad to hear that you are being proactive and preparing like this. I think it is better to prepare and have nothing happen than to not be prepared and have something happen. Cheers to you as well and Happy Holidays, Allen0187!

I doubt I would ever go to the lengths these folks have either. But I think it is smart to be prepared to some extent.

i havent seen those shows but you must be watching them.
when and on what channel? or are you just talking about shows in general? i think this sandy catastrophy and our economy is causeing a lot of folks to worry and take note for being prepared. especially since some actually believe its the end here on earth

THe show I watch is called Doomsday Preppers and it is on Tuesdays on National Geographic. And there have been other shows I have watched as well. If there is a financal demise it could cause an end to life as we know it. I think it better to be prepared and have nothing happen than not to prepare at all.

Yes, I have seen one of this shows...I think they are just paranoid of doing it...I even think that they are over reacting to the doomsday which the Mayans have predicted...I even saw that people in the show already wear gas mask and are already stocking foods for their survival kit! wow.

I agree that some are just paranoid and go way over board but, I also believe that is better to be prepared and have nothing happen than not prepare and have something happen.

Emergencies of that nature could very well happen, according to NASA and other sources. I think it makes more sense to be prepared and not have anything happen than to not be prepared and have something happen.
That "something" could be solar in nature. The sun controls much of what we experience here on earth, so that solar flares or CMEs could fry our electric grids instantaneously. The sun makes great differences in the weather, changing the temperatures of the ocean and land masses and the position of the jet stream.
Finances... we can see that happening if we just open our eyes. Then entire world is in financial trouble. Government takeover (ours or someone else's) is always a potential problem in any situation.
Add up all the odds, then think about the consequences of ignoring them. There are many, many prophecies and predictions of enormous life changing events in our near future. Why ignore those who try to warn us?
And IF "it" should happen, which neighbor are you going to go to for help? He just may decide his food, water, etc., are not available to you.
Just some thoughts.

I so agree with you!! And with the long list of things that could happen it seems even more probable.

Everything is possible and they're trying to prepare for all of it. Some of it would be difficult, but they're even thinking about blasting huge asteroids so they won't hit here, either change the course of their direction or make them into small fragments that we can take much better.
Some say the world will end at the end of the Mayan Calender. The Mayans were interupted during their creating the calendar. Fight people who are taking you over or work on a calendar? Which would you do. Duh.
