Recently I read a discussion coconut oil is used for cooking but I think in India coconut oil is use for hair and peanut(mungfalli oil) is used for cooking. Few persons use soyabin oil. I heard first time this coconut oil is used for cooking. Do you know this?

Copra/coconut oil was mainly used as a frying oil and in industrial pastries in Europe, but it is not recommended because, like palm oil, it has too much saturated fatty acids compared to other frying oils -- like olive or sunflower -- and they are not good for the health. Both palm oil and coconut oil are often replaced by more healthy oils today.

Hi dear, Yes, I know it very well. I am from Kerala state and in this place only coconut oil is using for cooking widely. In my childhood I watched only coconut oil in my home. But if there is festival or any other function some other oil also used for frying purpose. In that case too, coconut oil is the only option for curry. Coconuts are available as plenty in this state and coconut (paste form or direct) using for most of the dishes. Then the left over coconut is drying under sunlight and extracting oil from it, which is sufficient for house hold purposes. Now many other kinds of oil replaced as the coconut oil may lead to cholesterol problem. Taste is really good if coconut oil is used for preparations.

In our home we buy the oil from the place which is execrating (Mill) so that we get pure oil. We carry can from home to buy the oil. Now we bring those cans when we visit our native place to use here. The oil is available in bottle too. http://media.beta.photobucket.com/user/lengtarang/media/coconut-oil.jpg.html?filters[term]=coconut%20oil&filters[primary]=images&filters[secondary]=videos&sort=1&o=3

Hello, it is surprising for me than you don't know that coconut oil is used for cooking. In south coconut oil is used for cooking. In rest one India, peanut, cottonseed, mustred seed and soyabeen oil is used. Now soyabeen oil is in fashion. here we also used mustredseed "Sarsoon ka tail" oil. Mustred seed is main crop of Rajasthan.

Coconut oil is used mostly in south india; here in our home we use sunflower oil and mustard oil mostly, we buy in 5 liter cans of reputed brand only.. Earlier people belonging to 'Teli' caste used to extract oil from 'Til', mustard and sell, they are supposed to be pure, but now a day they don't do this any more.

Hi, I am from South India and there for certain meals a few drops of coconut oil adds the flavour of the meals - example - Aviyal (its a mix veg cooked in butter milk with coconut & chilly paste added) and a typical Keralite delicacsy. Similarly, in West Bengal, people used to cook in Mustered oil (sarso ka tel) - where as we find them more in making pickles. With our modern lifestyle and to control the cholostrol we need to choose healthy oil/s for cooking. I do use sunflower / soya oil for cooking and for hair, yeah coonut oil or some hair oils only.

I know that coconut oil is used for cooking. But we have cholesterol problem with it. The place where i come from( my parents native place) is full of coconut trees. so they use coconut in most of the dishes. Coconut is dried and they take it to the mill to get the oil. But we don't use it for cooking.we use sunflower oil and soya bean oil for cooking. I know Keralites use coconut oil for cooking. some of my north Indian friends say they don't have coconut trees in north and whenever we bring coconuts from our native place we give them ,they feel so happy.

Yes, in our country, coconut oil is abundant and there are many people who use it for cooking. Basically in frying foods. But now that more and more people are more aware of health concerns, some have stop using coconut oil for cooking considering that it contains a lot of fat which is not good for our body. Some have shifted to using corn oil, basically vegetable oil for cooking.

I mostly use it on my hair and skin, but have cooked with it a few time. It's good if you need to make vegan chocolate. The oil has the right consistency and melts at slightly higher than room temperate. It's not a healthy oil and it would be best to limit its use to the few dishes that must have it for taste or texture.

At my place, coconut oil is not so popular for cooking. The most popular oil we can get at the hypermarket are the palm oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, canola oil, sesame oil and olive oil. Coconut oil can be available at the small groceries shops where they are supplied by the very small producers. At home, I did purchase the coconut oil for lighting up when I was praying.

I am from the USA. I use coconut oil in cooking. Coconut oil is very good for you. Some people believe it is not good because studies done in the 1990's showed it caused higher levels of cholesterol. But the studies used hydrogenated coconut oil. Recent studies done with non-hydrogenated coconut oil have disproved this and have found that side effects are only reported when a patient has a considerable amount of trans fatty acids in their system already. Here is a link with that information www.ehow.com/about_5101508_coconut-oil-healthy.html Hydrogenation produces trans fatty acids, which are very bad for your health. Organic, non-hydrogenated coconut oil is extremely healthful.

Hi prashu, yes, it is very good. There are many sites that tel of the benefits of coconut oil and the more recent studies that have been done. Foods that have been hydrogenated are very unhealthy. Check out the link I provided. It's very informative. And if you have fresh coconuts to make your own oil this is very good. You're lucky!

if coconut is grated and coco milk is extracted, then cooked and then used as cooking oil, my goodness at doesn't taste good and we don't do it that way here. but it had to undergo certain procedure in a cooking oil company and then undergo a packaging procedure that will make them good for cooking.

I know some people eat it. Not because it tastes good. But because it is supposed to help reduce the effects of dementia and help improve memory in people with those types of problems. It's impressive when you look at the studies done on it. Sorry I don't know much about cooking with it.

Each state and country depends mainly on the crops and trees grown in plenty in their area. In some parts of South India coconuts are in plenty that is one of the reasons why coconut oil has been used for their basic cooking. As one goes towards north coconut is not easy available thats why different types of oils are used. In Maharashtra groundnut is grown in plenty and mainly people were using groundnut oil for cooking.

So far as I know, all vegetable oils are interchangeable for cooking. It may affect the taste of the product, though. I believe that the most popular cooking oil in the U S is canola, or a combination of canola and other vegetable oil such as corn oil. Soybean oil is considered to be a cheap product. Peanut oil is one of the more expensive cooking oils here.

Coconut oil has been used for cooking since time imemorial. Personally, I have used it for over 40 years and the expatIndians in my country use it so I am surprised that it is not used for cooking in India. We employed a lady who used to grate the coconjuts for the oil and then boil the liquid which was straind when it was cool. It is alsi a very good oil to use for cooking although it did have abad rap in the 80's but this proved to be false

If you visit Kerala or if you have Keralites/Malayalis friend, then you might taste food prepared using coconut oil. I first tasted it when I was in school and was invited by a Malayali friend of mine for dinner on the occasion of Onam. I didn't find myself comfortable eating most of the dishes served there, may be because I am not accustomed to eat food prepared using Coconut oil.
