Thanksgiving Every Day

I know the history about how Thanksgiving came to be, but I think that Thanksgiving should be every day. Granted it shouldn't be a feast every day, but we should be thankful for what we have every day. Even if you think you're life isn't that great and you have been having medical, financial or emotional crisis/troubles, be thankful every day that you're alive and made it through another day! What is your take on this mylotters and what are you thankful for?

I am grateful every day that I can wake up, open my eyes to see around me as well as to get up on my own and walk to the bathroom unaided. I am grateful for every day that I'm not in severe pain, as some of my friends are. You see, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998. Since then, I have gone through horrible pain, minor relapses, a temporary bout with optic neuritis and temporary walking impairment. I've also dealt with loss of friends, and discrimination in the work place. THAT is why I'm grateful to still be here, nearly 14 1/2 years later, and in the shape (or whatever you'd call it) I'm in!

Thank you Phil. Truth be told, unless you have it, you can't begin to understand how it feels personally to have it. My high school had only about a thousand students when I attended; five or six of us (all graduating within a six year period) have come down with it, yet we all suffer differently. The three men are all in wheelchairs, while the women appear to be fairly mobile. I was diagnosed with relapsing remitting; do you mind if I ask what type your sister has? Everyone seems to handle it differently; only three to four years ago, I was in terrible pain during the winter (still bothers me at times), but now I'm pretty much pain free. Only about 400,000 people in the United States have been diagnosed, so actually we're considered an orphan disease still. As a result, funding has to be raised privately because most studies are not federally funded. I'm glad that you're gaining experience by witnessing someone's difficulties-I still have people that look at me in disbelief and say, Oh you can't be sick because you look so good. I stopped all MS meds, and I do feel a lot better-I'm wondering just how much they actually help. I will say a prayer for your sister.

My sister also has M.S. She spends more and more time in a wheelchair although she can still walk with a walker. She receives social services including a caregiver 5 days a week. She has constant health issues as well as side effects from all the meds that she takes. I never knew how serious M.S. was until I saw it through her eyes. I also had no idea that M.S. was so common and that so many people have it. I also live in HUD housing for seniors and mobility impaired persons. One resident struggles and suffers with M.S. and so does a caregiver who works at this complex. I feel for all these persons. I hope that you have a nice Thanksgiving and Holiday Season.

Thanks scorpiobabes and bostonphil for joining in this discussion! @scorpiobabes, sounds like you have a positive attitude that is getting through all of this for you! People can be understanding and sympathize for you, but until they can walk a mile in your shoes will they ever know what you're going through! I remember working as a Residential Manager at a group home for mentally challenged individuals and it just amazed me how some people are so ignorant of people that are different from themselves. All people have feelings and emotions!

I have been blessed in life and totally agree with you that we must thank each day for what we have. I don`t celebrate Thanksgiving, but I thank that I have the ability of looking at the miracle of life and not find it boring. I have a wonderful family and some very good friends that amount to another family. I have a nice house, awesome plants with whom to talk and I have never been hungry in my entire life.

Sounds like you have a lot to be thankful for, my friend! I've had some struggles in my life and I'm sure I will continue to have more, but I'm thankful every day that I've made it through all of them! Thanks for joining in this discussion!

Bless you marguicha! At least you were fortunate to have some time on this earth to spend with your loved ones before their untimely passings. Some times the ones that don't have that much time on earth are the ones that are the most thankful (as well as the one that are closest to them.)

I totally agree with you! I have a lot to be thankful for. Last night I was thinking about this discussion and realized that most people would be thankful for material things like their home, food, jobs, etc. But what about the non material things such as family ex. your children and grandchildren. They are the product of you and your mate! It's unbelievable and amazing to me to think I created those people who will continue creating.

I remember the first time I encountered you Hatley here on myLot. I couldn't believe that you were in your 80s-you're so quick and in touch with what's going on out in the world. It's still hard to believe that you're 86, but awesome that you're here and you're of such a sharp mind! I'm grateful to count you among my friends here at myLot!

hi dear Jodee, my life has taken a truly huge turn for the better roughly 1,5 years ago. I am a very happy camper now and am thankful that I am not under that much emotional stress any more. I started a Gratitude Journal but sadly I dont take enough time to write in there so its on and off and restarting again and again...... Your discussion reminds me of this so thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I absolutely agree with you on this one, I know myself I tend to forget what I have and how I budget enough to get what I need whereas others don't.

I agree completely, we worry about what we dont have or what we want not what we already have.

Exactly, we tend to forget all the things we take for granted until we lose them and we still should be thankful that we had a chance to have "it!" Thanks for joining in this discussion!

I make it a point to thank God for at least one thing every day and it's not really hard to do once you start. You find all kinds of wonderful things in your life even when times are hard or you're full or sorrow. For instance, yesterday I thought about how much I'd like to be with my sons and I felt a little sad. Then I looked out my window where my flowering pear tree stands--it still had all its leaves but they'd turned to gold and the sun shining on them was like I had my own treasure chest of glittering gold right in my backyard! It made me think of all the real treasures I have in my life and after all, it's not like I'll never see my children again--I just have to sell my house! It will happen eventually and in the meantime I have a beautiful home to keep me warm and I'm never involuntarily hungry or cold or too hot. And I spent the day with my stepmother who loves me and later with my dogs, and got calls from my boys. Every day brings blessings! I'm happy that I have so much to thank God for and make sure that He knows it.

I'm thankful that I'm me and that I got a good brain on my shoulders. I'm thankful I can walk and have all five senses. I'm thankful for my son that lives with me, helps me and goes out for coffee/tea with me. I'm thankful for my other wonderful son. I'm thankful I'm a caring person who cares about people and animals. And anything else I should be thankful for I am.

That is a very good point, STOUTjodee! We should always be thankful of everything that we have and for every person that has touched our lives. I think a little prayer as soon as we open our eyes in the morning is one simple way of giving thanks for giving us another day to live and love life.

Well, in the meantime I'll start by saying that I, not being U.S. citizen, but I am Italian but, in my country, is not used to have the Thanksgiving Day. However, about ten years now, has been established the "party of the Italian Republic" held on June 2nd. To stay on topic with your discussion, I believe that after all, you're right. We have to thank all the times that things go in our favor. Even only for the fact of being alive every day! For this we thank God.

I believe that we can be thankful every day, if we choose to. I am thankful to have a job, a roof over my head, and a chance to be with family today. I have eaten too much, when many do not even get enough. My roof leaks, but my home is still large, and safe compared to others. My job does not pay really well, but it is a job of value and I do not have to be afraid of being locked out.

Fully agree with you there. Oftentimes, people whine & complain about the things that don't work right or great in their lives, when there's much to be thankful for. We're alive, with FREE fresh air to breathe. The poorest & most physically immobile among us in this part of the world have at least that to be grateful for. My physical condition & life circumstances are far from comfortable, but I still have a roof over my head, & some food to eat. I have access to myLot, the Web where I could earn a bit more income. However, images of starving people & orphaned children in other parts of the world come to mind, which makes me think how they'd fare with this question.

I had many difficult and challenging years in the past but presently my life is decent and even good. It is not the life that I should have had but I am grateful and thankful for what it is. I have a job and a nice apartment. I have decent health. I have enough money for all the basics and then some. Believe me, I am very grateful and thankful especially when I compare what my life was like in the past to the present. I have been watching the series Witness on HBO. These are short documentaries from the eyes of photojournalists, about life in conflict zones such as The Sudan, Juarez and Libya. While watching these docs, believe me, I realize how fortunate all of us on mylot are. Happy Thanksgiving.

I am thankful because of my mom and dad. Without them my life wouldn't be possible :) I love them more than everything, and I always help them when they ask for it, and sometimes when they don't :) I am thankful for my country's democracy, and the nice community we have made. I hope that in asia people will come to senses and stop this corruptness, and hunger! Every human should be free, and every human should have a good life! Every human is equal, no matter gender, skin color or religion. Every human are the same specie! Thank you :)
