Lack of focus while doing pooja - Is there any disease because of lack of focus
India

I notice myself If I am doing pray or pooja in front of God then my mind is going here and there think about other things like about shopping, eating, remember old memories etc. means not concentrate on prayer. My body is there but mind is not there. I feel bad but not control on myself. Do you have such habit or you pay full concentration or think only about your pray. I want to know how can focus on my pooja and why mind is think about other things.

hi, I also can not concentrate on one thing. While doing one thing my mind is going elsewhere. There are many thoughts in the mind. Some people say that meditation is very useful for improving mind concentration but I haven't tried it. I think very few people can concentrate on on e thing at a time.

Dear Surekharathi, Your discussion reminded me of my Histroy class when I was in 10th. The teacher whenever asked me questions, i used to reply, i'll study at home today and tell the answer tomorrow.... and she says, you all have absent mind and present body. Today my days are usually hectic with sending the kids to school, make breakfast/lunch and myself getting ready for work etc i only get a little time to call my favorite god/ goddess and i am sure they understand me. But the two or three minutes i pray, i do it will full concentration and with sincere prayers. Ok, if you want to focus during your prayers / pooja, look at the feet of the god and chant the aarti (prayers) your mind will be with you only and will not go out for chatting or eating. Or you can do prayers only when you finish your shopping, eating or memorizing other things.

To me praying and meditating is a time to reflex on my day and be thankful for the day and yesterday and what ever comes tomorrow I don't worry if my mind wonders during this time because maybe I should address what is concerning me at the time! to me that is part of my prayers and meditation.

I think this is a purely human thing no matter what our religion is. It is very difficult to discipline ourselves to prayer. That is why so few of us actually accomplish it!It is very easy for our minds to wonder on our day instead of concentrating on our god.

I always focus on my prayer. That's why my prayer time is upon waking up and before going to sleep. The serenity of the early morning and the stillness of the night, enable me to be concentrated. Besides, i would always think that God is there in front of me, just conversing with me.

I practice zazen, (Zen meditation) where the intent is to still the mind and focus on just the breathing. This is a huge challenge for most people and the mind will race around from thought to thought. It is a paradox. In zazen we allow the mind to race around and as soon as we realize that we have been seized by the mind, we bring out focus back on to our breath. This happens a lot, but the more we practice, the more adept we become. It is more a way of life to realize the challenges that come from the mind.. _Derek

I think all of us get distracted while praying. Try practicing meditation for few minutes everyday. You may then learn to concentrate on only one thing at one time.

I think it is kind of natural. I keep my prayers very short and usually for other people. That way I just do the prayer really quick and not allow for other things to get in to my mind. Also I try to think of the person I am praying for and that helps.

Your behavior is normal but worldly. You need to ask forgiveness and try harder to focus your mind on the subject of your prayer.

This can happen if you keep on repeating some mantras that you find in books. But if your pray from your heart there is no way you can get disturbed. I pray from my heart.

OK this is not good, seems you are always in a hurry to finish things; do you have a separate puja room? Close the doors once you are in, switch off tv/radio etc. Sit comfortably, look at the god/goddess idols or a red electric bulb; try to concentrate, i am sure your mind will stop wandering soon

It is natural for the mind to wander during prayers or for that matter while doing any activity. What I usually do is to just gently bring my attention back to my prayers. I don't force and stop my thoughts. Just watch them, continue with my prayers, and they usually subside. When this gentle practice does not work, I have realized that by saying my prayers out aloud, I can concentrate on the prayers. The thoughts don't distract me then.

The best way to concentrate is not pushing away your thought as they come. Before you even start praying, allow all thoughts to come to your mind one by one. The will come and let them pass by. Try even to think of next thought, try to force what your next thought going to be about and will be surprised that suddenly you cannot think of anything else. your mind will go completely blank. You will then be able to pray effectively. Blessing

I don't pray, or I should say I do not pray anymore. As a kid I was forced to do so before we went to bed for example. I recognize what you say.. I am also not able to pray and my mind is busy with other things as well. But should you care about that? I think that if you truely believe you can pray everywhere. If you believe in god he is everywhere around you and some lines or thoughts should do as well. Being forced to pray at certain times/hours is wrong, since according to me you just do it because it's a must. Also praying because you are in need or need something is not the way it should be. It's what we call here "commercial" praying. I think that god will like you the way you are and what it is about is that your intentions are good. Perhaps it might help if you (before you start praying) write down first everything that pops up in your mind. Also a good start is to start with a short prayin, 1 or 2 lines and focus on that. But again.. I think it should come from your heart and for that many words and hours of praying is not necessary. It's the feeling that counts.

I have also experienced that one , when our priest is giving his sermon my mind goes somewhere , thinking and planning . This is wrong , for sometimes we goes to hear priest sermon for the sake of fulfilling our obligation and our heart is not there. The exact thing to do is we must have our focus , meditate , surrender our heart and soul to God . In this way what the the teachings would of the church would be instilled deeply in our heart and soul.

Hi surekha bhabhi.. Well I don't pray. But I can associate this thing with my classes. I was never able to pay attention in class. And whenever I did, I fell asleep. But back then I was never interested in what teacher was teaching and nor was interested to learn. But now that I am trying to score good marks in exams I have found my focus back. So I think as long as you dont need anything from god your mind will sway to other things. If you have any problem and want god to help you solve it, you will observe that you have found your lost focus. Anyways have a nice day ... +SuperShames+

No need to feel bad if someone is loosing concentration during prey time there is a need of devoting more time and must choose a appropriate peaceful place for praying and eyes must be closed at the time of praying.
