I thought I was going to have to call the city

I thought that I was going to have to call the city because they hadn't picked up our recycles from last week and were late this week. I doubted anyone else in the house would have called so I was set out to do it today. Luckily they did come and pick them up this morning at some point. I suppose they were behind because of Christmas, I am not sure, but I was wondering about it.
Now I can start recycling more magazines that I've been waiting to recycle.
I tried buying two liters so people would drink out of those and save the environment and the recycling bin from so much plastic but no one but myself is drinking out of a glass now.
Hmm.

well they do, but they don't want to do more to cut down on having to recycle as much. I mean using two liter bottles instead of 16.9 fl oz.

Recycling is great. I'm sure they probably were behind because of the Holiday. I try to use 2 liters as well. The only problem I find with them though is for me they often seem to get flat faster. Maybe in time others will start to drink out of 2 liters.

Yes they do go flat but I guess I've been used to it for years so it doesn't bother me so much. One of my friends bought a soda stream I want one of those!
I think though that perhaps if I can get them to buy cans instead of bottles.. atleast cans can be crushed easier... Even recycled in other ways.

I don't have the soda stream my friend has so I don't know. I suppose it would taste alright, perhaps not quite the same as the brands we love though.
I will still try to press it. I was tempted to buy soda's in a can today but just bought myself two liter pepsi, pepsi is my treat to myself.

That is good that it doesn't bother you. It drives me crazy to have flat soda. Not that I need to be drinking Soda everyday but it taste so good and I view it as a treat for myself. Do you really like that Soda stream? I have thought about but didn't know how people viewed them. Because I don't know anyone who has tried it. Does it really taste like soda? Keep trying to get them to use cans. Cans stay fresh longer as well so they might not mind it unless they feel cans are too small.

Most pick up services, like trash and recycling do get changed by holidays that happen on weekdays. When it comes to recycling you can only be responsible for yourself. Everyone else will just do what they are in the habit of doing anyway.

We had the plastic BPA free cups that look like fast food cups on clearance at work the other day I thought of getting one of those, but didn't. I think I might check amazon.com for it though. If I had one of those I'd have enough drink for awhile for myself anyway.
I think atleast one other person would use it as well if I did it that way.

i guess most garbage pick up has been behind because of the holidays and will be as well because of New Years next week. our city has been really good about picking up recycling because they implemented a one garbage bag per week (at the end of the month, you are allowed to put three bags out).
maybe your family will take a little bit more time to adjust to that idea.

The garbage was picked up just not the recycles, until like two days later. I suppose they have a lot more they have to do then just throw it in a landfill.
I'm not sure. I am trying to get them to drink more out of glasses but it's not working so well. I want to maybe price a can crusher and maybe I can switch them from bottles to cans...

Maybe you need to have a family meeting and let them know what your plan is and see if they will agree and help out with this. Communication is important. Just expecting people to see it all your way and no problems doesn't always work.

Honestly it is just my grandmother and my uncle that drink out of bottles besides myself. My grandfather doesn't seem to. I tried to get my grandmother to drink out of big two liter bottles by putting some into her smaller bottle but she says it doesn't taste right.
I plan to get her a special cup and see if she'll do that. We do need to be sure to crush everything as much as possible as well.
A family meeting wouldn't really work for us here.

I guess folks as they age do get alittle finicky. I know I am. No family meeting? That is a shame.

It is so good that you care about the environment but I have found out that we can pnly be responsible for ourselves and although we try, other people will not be so careful as us. Everyone hasn to take responsibility I guess. Glad that your garbage did get picked up though.

Garbage had been, recycling comes a day after Garbage does. Same city picks it up, just different division.
I use re-useable shopping bags when I go out to the store. I recycle what I can. I'd do more if I could, but there's not much more that I can do, atleast not here.

Our refuse collection is on a Tuesday, but because Christmas Day fell on a Tuesday this year we had to put the refuse out for them to collect on Thursday, when I looked out our house and our neighbours, who I put out for her were the only ones that had put their rubbish out, I guess people forgot or didn't think they'd be a collection Christmas week. Thankfully it's all back to normal now. I always drink my water out of a tap, I never buy bottled.

It is back on track luckily. I am not even sure when they picked it up but I am glad they did. It was more the recycles then the refuse as the refuse was picked up, recycling wasn't.
It is only every other week but that week was a week for Recycles, they delayed it.

I'm pretty sure that Christmas is the reason that the recycling items didn't get picked up until later. But here....not only will the trash pickup be delayed by Christmas, but also because of the snow we've had. I would say there is probably around 6 to 8 (or more) inches of snow in the alley where the trash truck has to drive to get to the large trash bin around the back of the apartment complex here.

They didn't come last week and I didn't expect them to but they were late this week so I just wasn't sure that they were going to come at all. We haven't had any snow, just rain and wind for us. When we do have snow the city sends out the snow plow / salt trucks.

The holidays can throw a lot of stuff off--recycling included.
I do recycle, but I know what a miniscule effort it is. The Earth shall not be saved by recycling. It is a band aid on a spurting arterial gash.
My boyfriend has often reminded me of that (in different words, of course). I know that he's right. *Sigh* However, I still do it.
I don't understand why the people in your household seem so opposed to using (nice, eco-friendly) glasses to drink out of, but I am guessing that it is just one of life's great mysteries.
Perhaps, if you get some really cool-looking glasses or personalized mugs, it would give them some incentive?

I do intend to get BPA free plastic cups, the newer ones that look like fast food cups. They are both tall and cute, and hopefully that will encourage the one that really does drink a lot of sodas, to stop drinking so much, to drink it out of a two liter.
We can't put the two liters in the fridge no room. We also buy two different types of milk. My family buys flavored water (0% milk) whereas I buy DHA & Omega 3 milk.
I know that recycling is just scraping the surface, and not really doing so much of a big impact but I still do it because atleast it does something.
However, I don't know about my own county, but a county I used to live in, they pick up recycles but don't recycle them, they just end up throwing them in the dump.

Well I never said I was going to make someone, they were late the week after Christmas as well which is what I was going to call and inquire about but they did in fact finally pick it up.

Well I am not sure why they delayed but I am really happy that you are so concerned about recycling products. I do it hardly. but now i need to do it more often. I am kinda inspired from you. Really you do a very good deed by doing that. It is like a duty towards nature.
