OR frustration #3. Well, today was the day of my grandson(Joshua's) competency hearing. But I think the people that were there needed theirs today instead. Last Thursday we faxed the H&W social worker Josh's IEP(School plan) and his counseling plan over to her.(So that's three days she and her associates had to look it over.)So we get to the meeting this a.m. and are called in. There are two medical doctors and the social worker. They are looking over the paper work and asking us "Isn't he developmentally delayed?" Uh, no. So they were the wrong people. We set there in disbelief. They kept saying ok, so thanks for coming in and we just set there dumb struck. It says right on the front page of his IEP that he is emotional disturbed, not developmentally delayed. Finally I got up and left. I could not, and still can't believe it. I spoke to the social worker twice and my daughter talked to her once and none of those times did she ask if he was developmentally delayed which would have saved us all a lot of time and effort. Plus it says right on the IEP! They didn't act like they had even looked at the paperwork until right then in the meeting. incompetent, waste of our time, irritation, incompetent, waste of gas that I budget each month, prolonging the whole thing that much longer, incompetent, and Josh loses a day of school. If I were these people I would be embarrassed. They get paid for their time regardless. I should sent them a bill for time spent and gas money.(I wish I could) I wonder what the social worker's boss will say? Anything? So with the hospital fiasco, Josh deciding to get a lawyer and this I am about spent. When do we get to the bottom of this? After we have all forgotten what we are even there for? Your thoughts.

That is just beyond anything I would call incompetent. If it wasn't so serious I would say these professionals are part of a comedy. I'm so sorry you wasted your time and money to go there. I bet if you wanted to place him in a foster home they would be all on top of that...but because you are just trying to get problems solved they act dumb.

he he PointlessQuestions its the squeaky wheel that is the one that gets the grease lol and you and Cythiann are so right.I got final results after almost eight months of a rash that all sorts of ointments would not touch all b cause of a damned referral and when the nurse at mydoctors said it was there but I would have to go ten miles to my doctor to get it and I suddenly screamed"NO YOU FAX THAT REFERRAL OVER TO THE WOUND SPECIALIST NOW AND I WILL MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH HIM," She was startled I guess as she did fax it over to the wound specialist and i made the appointment and saw him the next day.He was the one who cured it finally, .

I'm with Cyn, I think you need to make some noise about this now. You know the old saying, the greasy wheel is the one that gets the grease.

I did not think that this would ever happen in the USA. I am speechless but full of disgust by the way you have been treated. No, this cannot rest and you must start a paper trail to document what is happening. Do not be emotional but write down the facts as somewhere along the line lawyers maybe involved and you need facts. #write down what happened at the meeting and the previous meetings. There must be someone that can advise you. a citizen's advice group or something? I am so angry as I know how much you and your daughter were hoping that the problems could begin to be solved. Someone has to take responsibility celtic. Oh God I am angry

speaking from my own nightmare of dealing with these people, Cynthiann is exactly right...keep a paper trail of all phone conversations etc. In fact keep phone calls and private talks to a minimum.

Well, first of all calm down. It doesn't help to get angry and upset. After reading the responses on here and thinking about it for the last four hours I have decided to keep in mind what has happened today and if anything like this happens again I will report it to management. It does need to be addressed and I will say something next time we are scheduled to go meet this social worker again. I plan on asking if she has all her ducks in a row this time so there are no more false starts. Josh missed a day of school and it was a waste of all our time.

You are taking this so well. Remember though to document everything and have a plan of action. You must also be respectfully assertive too. Don't let them walk all over you please

After he read his rights he said he wanted one. He knows he's guilty and how he thinks its going to help him(except string out longer)is beyond me. I think I am right. I want to complain about that social worker but I think what I am going to do is to ask her when she calls again if she is really ready this time. And if she makes any more mistakes I am going to report her.

I dealt with more than enough of these people. Just for the record, I don't feel these head people belong in the schools. I went to an independent doctor that was not affiliated with the school and while it cost me more, it was money well spent. It would take me forever to explain it all. all in all...my daughter did not need to be medicated. The IEPs are a joke once the kids get beyond elementary school. Good luck getting a teacher to pay an ounce of attention to them. Oh and the meetings...they all meet before hand and have their story together. You go in and it is you against them. So so glad that I am done with that stuff. I actually threatened them legally to back off from my daughter. I had a hearing and all and won. Don't let them bully you!

Glad to hear you won in the hearing. Sorry you had these problems. We haven't been bullied or anything. It is just merely the negligence and idiocy of all of this. As I have said before I talked to this social worker twice and my daughter once before the actual meeting. She could of ask us what his status was at that time. And they didn't even act like they had looked at the paperwork before the meeting at all.

BLESS YOUR HEART, u sure do have alot on u.I really don't know how u cope as well as u seem to. That was ridiculous the way the meeting turned out. I wish ui could bill them to. People nowadays are soooooo incompetent w/their jobs. Seems as long as they get that paycheck they could care less how they do their job. I find that in people so much, doctors, lawyers & Indian chiefs as we use to say as kids.I really wish u could get your grandson some help w/his problems. I know it would make all your lives better.

I am trying to not let it bother me. Ranting on here seems to help. There were the other two incidents too that really frustrated me and with my sensitivity to stress it hasn't been fun. We have been getting to the bottom of what needs to be done to get him the help he needs. Its in process. But now this court thing is being backed up by incompetents. Ugh!

Hi Celtic, That is terrible. I am a former Special Ed student. I hope that Joshua gets the accommodations that he is entitled to according to his IEP. Someone needs to attend the next meeting who can advocate for his best interest. I hope Joshua does not get lost in the system. Please keep us posted.

Well, I would think that his mother and I are there with his best interest in mind. I would like to be able to report this to someone as I feel it was both incompetency, a waste of tax payer's money and several other things. And could have so easily been avoided.

If I am not mistaken, by the time a student with an IEP reaches 8 years old the label "Developmentally Delayed" is not a correct label and they must then be labeled, as your grandson is with a more specific diagnosis such as emotionally disturbed or other things like that. However most people, like doctors and social workers do not know this.

Well, I think that as long as Josh is in grade school and has a IEP whatever the reasoning is for the IEP to even be in place is on the front page of the paperwork and whether or not he is developmentally delayed wasn't the issue. It was them doing their jobs! They had the paperwork three days prior to this meeting. And the social worker could have screened this whole thing over the phone on her original phone call to us and actually been prepared today. This was negligent on their behalf and should of been taken care of before we were even called in there.

I understand your frustration as I experienced similar goings on when both my kids were little. We got nowhere no matter which way we turned. Our lives went down hill until finally I hit rock bottom. The kids hit the same level at different times. Our little family was so broken. I have no idea how to advise you except to say, hang in there. Your friends here will lend you their ears and hugs and support whenever you want them.

opj celtic eagle this its so typical of our medical profession I had a rash on my leg and had to wait for a referral; to a wound specialist as i have diabetes. did they do it in a week a month two months more like six months as first we had to play who has the referral my hmo? my doctor? the doctor I am supposed to be sent to? so I call my hmo no they sent it to my doctors no you must go to, and they gave the doctors name, so I called them too and no I had to have that referral from my own doctor. My doctor's nurse told me I had to come to get it so I screamed" no you fax it over to him then I will call for an appointment" and she did I guess because she did not want me screaming at her anymore.I did not want to have to spend another seven dollars for the access bus. Once I got to the wound specialist he gave me a tube of special cream and two tubes of it and the rash that I had for eight months was gone. I had had it turn into cellulitis and suffered with that til they sent me to a specialist who was more into tummy tuck and cosmetic surgery than my cellulitis so finally with the wound specialist it cleared up,since then it came back twice and each time two tubes of the cream and its gone. But I spent 7 stupid months being shuffled all over before I got cured. gggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I do too! I just can't believe it! If it was something we did it would have probably been meant with harsh punishment for Josh or some harsh words from the judge. But them....... and its an entire different story. I just set there. I thought there would be something we could accomplish there today. And the guy just said bye like it was nothing. They had just taken it for granted he was developmentally delayed when it said right on the front page of the IEP that he wasn't. All they had to do was look. Durrr! I would be embarrassed.

I suppose this is not the first time these people are found incompetent. I feel sorry that it has to happen to your grandson and at such a critical time. I hope that there's a solution to this bad start and you will be able to find a way to get their attention to look into the case more seriously. I could not help feeling that things are amiss and if this is to continue, I would not dare imagine what the outcome will be for your GS. As for hiring a lawyer, do you think you would be able to get legal aid?
@celticeagle (189820)

I don't think legal aid would handle such a case. They have court appointed attorneys. He sees his toward the end of this month. That isn't a problem. Just getting someone competent might be.

oh dear celticeagle I am so sorry to hear of that fiasco. They are no more than thoughtless idiots who seem to earn their salary sleeping. I am sorry that it happened to you as you already have enough on your plate without things like this happening. Will there be another hearing now as this didnt work out due to wrong papers?

I bet those two doctor got paid for attending the wrong meeting. I bet the social worker did too. And we just got dismissed like we were nothing. How much college does it take to become a social worker? I think I could have set up a better meeting and I haven't had one day of college. My daughter and I do have enough on our plates. Josh is acting better but just because he knows he has court coming up. I guess there has to be another meeting. I just hope this mess doesn't set the court dates back further. This whole thing is pretty screwy.

It was an annoying thing. They neglected their duty to such an extent that held a competency hearing without so much as making sure whether your grandson was developmentally delayed or emotional disturbed. And that they neither saw the IEP before meeting nor registered what your daughter and you told them about it.
