Wooden or plastic clothes pins?

I've been wondering about this for a while now and just bought a new pack of wooden clothes pins and got to thinking, which are better and why? Wooden or plastic clothes pins. My mother and I've hung my clothes out to dry as far back as I can remember and that I'm married and having to wash my own laundry, I too, hang my own clothes out on the line whenever I get the chance. It saves us a lot of money to use elsewhere. So what say you? Wooden or plastic?

I have tried both types but I like the wooden ones better. They are stronger to me. They seem to last longer too!

Really? I've thought about trying the plastic ones but since you've tried both and like the wooden ones better, I think I'll stay with the wooden ones. Thanks!

I'm going to say plastic just because everyone and their dog is against plastic items nowadays. And I guess if it were really hot, the wooden pins would last longer than the plastic ones. The plastic ones could melt (I know it would have to be super hot), and even if they didn't melt, if they got hot they could still release unhealthy chemicals in the air. I read way too much cr@p about environmental stuff.

LOL You have me laughing! Apparently you like going against the grain....? Don't like being 'like everybody else' eh? LOL Heeeeey, it's ok to be different. Nothing at all wrong with that. After all, that's how the world goes around. However, I think I'll stick with the wooden ones.

Plastic ones just are wimpy, at least the ones I have tried.

The wooden ones were the ones I was advocating.

I moved into this house with a laundry tearing up dog. Now I don't even have a clothes line. Besides, the birds would probably get them. I like plastic, but that's because I'm kind of funny about the texture of wood sometimes.

I have a lot of trees as well as all those sheds... bird droppings are what I'm worried about. I don't know that Zoe or Cujo would bother my clothes, but I don't have a line now anyway, had it taken out when we put the hot tub in. About the wood... just weird about textures sometimes. Love polished wood, hate rough textured wood, fingers are bad enough, but do you remember those wood ice cream "spoons" you used to get in school? Lips are WAY worse!

Yeah I do remember! Good point! It's just like I don't like drinking out of glass cups because one broke in my mouth one time and that was it for me! I only use plastic cups these days. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I have two dogs that will take my clothes right off the clothes line and is why hubby had to fence the clothes line off so they can't get to them anymore. Plus it gives room for the 3 little dogs and cats to roam around in. Birds don't bother my clothes but I do hope that they don't fly over and drop their droppings on them but if they do then I'd just wash them again. Why are you uncomfortable about wood?

Hi Cats, glad to see you again. I use both, only because I had the plastic ones and was given wooden ones..lol The wooden ones I found don't break as easily, but I like the plastic ones for light colored clothing, I am afraid the wooden one will leave a mark, but I am not sure if that is true though since I never tested it out..

For less breakage, yes the wooden ones are best and though my clothes pins are not out all year long, they are out all season long, so they do get wet, even though I keep them in a container that has drainage. I also turn my shirts upside down, but there are other things, like sheets and pillowcases that I don't want a mark on, so I just use my plastic ones for those..:)

Hi carmelanirel and thanks! Good to see you too! If you have new wooden ones, they shouldn't leave a mark on your clothes appose to the older ones and if they've been left on the clothes line all year long like some people do. Also I hang my shirts upside down so that if there were to be a mark on it, it would be at the bottom where I could hide it by bunching up my shirt around my waist. Just an idea to pass along to you. I think I'll stay with the wooden ones for that's the majority of the vote is going towards.

My mom used to hang her clothes out too till she had a stroke and couldn't anymore so whenever I was up at her house and washing needed to be done, I'd do it for her and hang them out and take them down when they dried. I'd be so happy to do it for you too if only we were closer! I too love the way my clothes and sheets smell after being in the fresh air for a while. Downy doesn't even compare! lol And I think I'll stick with wooden pins.

To this day I still like the wooden ones. I have some from back in the 60's and they sure bring back memories. The plastic are ok but not to my taste. Old fashion, yes I am.

Wooden ones seem to be the majority so I'm staying with them however, I've never seen the older ones but heard they last much longer than these newer ones of today. I'm hoping to go by a hardware store and see if they still have them for I'd love to have something that lasts as long as the ones you're describing back in the 60's?! Wow....

Keep an eye open at thrift stores and yard sales. You might just find some old ones there. You will still be happy with the ones you get. I just find that the plastic ones break faster.

I decided to buy a bag of the plastic ones and half of them are already broken, so its no savings for me to buy plastic. My mail man broke some of them, as I tried using them to put my mail on my box to have him pick it up and it wasn't good to see all the broken clothes pins in the bottom of my mail box. The wood ones are costly in my area, but you are paying for a better quality product to me. I moved that is why we needed new clothes pins couldn't find my over 20 year old clothes pins.

I'm getting a lot of the same responses about wooden pins are better than the plastic ones so I'll stick with the wooden ones. Now the old type of wooden ones aren't around anymore.... at least I can't find them so I used the department store's kind. Thanks for helping me choose which to go with!

I like the wooden ones, they seem to last longer. The last time I had plastic ones I used them on a blanket and when I used them they just slid up and off and when I picked them up off the ground they were sprung and in two pieces. I haven't hung clothes out in a long time and kind of wish I had a line now, there is nothing like the smell of sheets fresh off the line!

I couldn't agree more! Love love the freshness of the fresh air in my clothes as they dry. Plus it gives me that freedom feeling like I could fly. LOL Silly notion, I know but still, it's a great feeling! However, the majority if for the wooden pins so I think I'll stick with them as well. Thanks!

I'd sa¥ that it's six of one to a half dozen of the other. I believe that wooden clothespins are easier to use, but they mildew when left out in the weather. Plastic does not mildew, but it breaks more easily than wood.

If you take the wooden ones inside then they won't mildew. That's not hard to do, you just put them in a bag as you take the clothes off the line. I think I'll stick with the wooden ones since they do last longer.

We also hang clothes on the line too, we have plastic clothes pin as those are the cheapest and very light to use. I use clothes pin for the kids clothes while for the adults i always use a hanger for the tshirts and the likes.

It seems to be almost evenly split so far but since I have the wooden ones, I think I'll stick with that. I hang my clothes on hangers once they dry except for my bras, I hang them in my closet to dry.

I also hang my clothes to dry. I gave away my drying machine several years ago. I prefer wooden clothes pins because plastic breaks easily after a time in the sun. In Winter I place the garmets in the bathroom at night. They are dry or almost the next day.

I still have my dryer but it saves a lot of money to just hang the clothes outside and they smell so much better too. Did you know you could hang your clothes outside in the winter time too? I mean, as long as your fingers can stand the cold and the wet/cold clothes. I don't think I could so I use my dryer during the winter months.

I actually have to admit that I really don't hang a lot of clothes out to dry. The reason that I don't is because of the fact that we live on a highly wooded lot and if I tried to hang my clothes out to dry then they would never be clean. That said, I honestly believe that the wooden ones are better because they are a lot more durable. You get bonus points if you are able to find the old fashioned ones that don't have the spring on them. Those really are the best.

What makes you think that? I live on 5 acres of mostly trees and I still hang my clothes out to dry. I don't have any problems and they come down smelling like fresh air and saves me some money by not using the dryer. I'm hoping to find the old kind of pins at a hardware store in town here. I know the department stores don't have them but maybe the hardware store will. Thanks!

The majority is for the wooden pins over the plastic ones because they're stronger and last longer so I guess I'm sticking with the wooden ones. Good luck!

I have always preferred the wooden ones over the plastic ones that I have seen. The plastic ones were too weak to hold up the clothes. Now the plastic ones my grandma could get, about seventy years ago were a lot stronger. The thing is the plastic does not deteriorate and leave marks on the clothes. I still prefer wooden, though, now if I just had a place to hang out clothes.

I've never tried the plastic ones and is why I've started this discussion. My mom used to use the wooden ones too and that's all I know. Now that I know that the plastic ones are weak, I'll stay with the wooden ones. Thanks!

I've always preferred wooden, maybe because I grew up with them. Of course, I'd rather have the kind with the spring than the other, plain ones. The plain ones were the ones my mother had. I couldn't say but I'd think the wooden ones would last a lot longer than plastic. Plastic tends to become brittle over time when exposed to the sun and becomes weaker until it breaks. The wooden ones last practically forever. I honestly never saw my mother buying new clothespins. The ones I can first remember were still being used when we moved out of that house and went our separate ways. I'm like you, I prefer hanging clothes outside to dry. You just can't get that fresh, outdoor smell from any fabric softener! For things like towels and jeans, I line dry them, then put them in the dryer for about 10 minutes to "fluff" and get the stiffness out of them. It doesn't cost much to run the dryer for 10 minutes as opposed to 90 minutes or whatever.

Hey Marti! I'm hearing a lot about the brittleness of plastic pins so I think I'll stick with the wooden ones. I wish they'd last forever for me! But no, they fall apart after about 4 or 5 years and get this nasty film on them so I have to buy new ones after so many years. I do the same thing, put my clothes in the dryer to soften them up and it is much cheaper than running the dryer for a long period of time. ESPECIALLY when one's dryer doesn't heat up like it should!

The texture of the wooden clothes pins seems to grab the fabric a little better then the slippery plastic ones however both work just fine in my opinion . My vote is whichever is one sale.
