It's a traditional way to calm down the crying baby in China. For example, when the baby is stumbled by something and hurt his leg, his parents will curse the thing( such as a stick or small rocks) and hit it. Just like they can avenge their baby. We can see that most people in China would like to protect their baby in this way. But do you feel it's really strange? How do you think of this behaviour? In your country, how do people calm down their crying babies?

No, I see nothing strange with it, but you'd have to be careful that the child doesn't end up thinking that its then okay to hit someone who might accidentally bump into them or knock them down. In our country, most of the time I will see the parent hug and comfort the crying child or be trying to make the child laugh. Sometimes if its a boy they might say to stop crying and walk it off.
