First it was taking "Dixie" out of the fair... now this?

A local councilman proposed taking the word "Dixie" out of the name of our fair. Well that was shot down, but now he wants words like "South", "Confederacy", "Deep South", "Jefferson" and even so far as the letter "E" to be abolished from our language.
I mean, seriously? What is this guy on? He says it's highly offensive. Well I just don't see that. People don't kill each other in hate crimes because of words like "South."
I'm just done with the ignorance and idiocy of others. Abolishing words and names of those tied to the Confederacy is NOT going to a dang thing for anyone.
It's NOT going to stop hate crimes.
it's NOT going to bring back those dead because of hate crimes.
and it's NOT going to somehow "cure" the grieving mothers and father's, sister's and brother's, spouses and children, whom no longer have their loved ones BECAUSE of the hate.
Hate is born of ignorance and fright, and i'm sorry but none of those things will ever change. As long as there are ignorant people in this world, there will be hate and hate crimes.

What's this guy's name... bet it has an "E" in it! (first or last) As far as this "war" on all things Southern, I too agree... it's gettin' outta hand! The Southern states are a part of this country. The Southern ways are a part of the history we need to keep.
I am born and bred Northerner, but I'm a history buff too. It just makes my blood boil when I see politicians tryin' to re-write my history... OUR history!

Councilman jamEs taylor.
The confederacy has nothing to do with the hate crimes of today anyway.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I know! The PC crowd always needs the past to connect whatever is bad now... to the past.

@MaddiOashi The news stations aren't helping either. Most of what they spew is ignorance and jaded to what they want people to fear and believe. It's ridiculous and facebook has just become one of those types of "broadcasters"

Sounds like a control freak to me. I know that there has been some stuff in the news about the confederacy flag lately. But the 'deep south' and stuff seems silly to me. Hate is an awful thing. I hope this councilman will get a grip and that people don't let him take over.

I haven't heard anything more about it yet. It is ridiculous and a waste of time. Words like these are not the fuel of hate.

@ScribbledAdNauseum -- That's for sure. Need to just stand by that belief.

Although words can be powerful things, nothing is as powerful as history. We cannot erase history and the confederacy is part of history. The South is the South, the North is the North. Words can only affect people if they let them. The idea that you can change hearts and minds by banning words is just misguided. All this talk of banning things is only making everything much worse by dividing people even more.

It's giving ignorant people fuel for a fire that is ridiculous. The sad thing is that there are people who agree with this guy and his choice of banning these words, or atleast trying to ban them.

Are they playing some type of joke on you guys? I think that is ridiculous but it only takes one person to complain. I know things here just locally they have tried changing because someone moves here and causing an uproar.

I wish it was some sort of a joke but he's very serious. He tried to get the name of our fair changed because it had "dixie" in it. That got shot down, I imagine (or hope) this will to.
