School year, that is. Today was the first teacher workday of the new school year here in NC. It was an optional workday but I opted to work rather than use a leave day and stay home. I needed to get into my classroom and see what's to be done to be ready for the students when they show up next Monday.
This year I will be teaching Social Studies in the fall and Science in the spring to my seventh graders. Right now I have three classes with a total of 88 students. That number will certainly change by next Monday. It is just a question of if it will go up or down and by how much.
I did go shopping at a local store called The Learning Center, a store started by retired teachers for teachers. I found some great material there to use in class this year. I am covering the period from the 1400s up to the day before the semester ends. And I've got 18 weeks to do it. 700 years in 18 weeks, I can do that. Last year I did 3 million years in 36 weeks.

We spent a good bit of time on Ancient Egypt, Greece, and China. I would like to have spent more time on Ancient India, though we did cover Hinduism and Buddhism fairly well. Also, I gave medieval Europe short shrift and spent more time on MesoAmerica as the Myans, Aztecs, and Incas usually get hardly a mention.

Hope you get some great students and they all aren't little horror's..but then that is what makes a teacher a teacher..teaching those who need it the most!
