Do you know what not to keep in your fridge?

There are foods that you obviously need to keep in your fridge. But do you know what foods you should not keep in there? I think most people know you don't store tomatoes in the fridge. As a note to that, once you cut the tomato it then must be kept in the fridge. A few more items not to keep in the fridge are: Coffee - the coffee will lose it's rich flavor when stored in the fridge. I used to do that, now I keep a coffee canister in my pantry out of sunlight. Potatoes and Onions - They will become soft if stored in the fridge. Again, keep them out of sunlight and they will last longer. PS: Do not store onions and potatoes together! Honey - I keep mine in my pantry and have no problem with it. If you keep it in the fridge that makes it very difficult to pour. Bread - you can keep your bread in the freezer, but not in the fridge. You may have figured out by now that storing certain foods in the fridge will dry them out or they will lose flavor.

Growing up, we always stored tomatoes in the refrigerator. Same with potatoes, onions, and bread. My parents still do it, but I don't. I have baskets in my pantry for potatoes and onions. Bread goes in the bread box on the counter, and I'll leave tomatoes on the counter in another basket. Oh, they refrigerate peanut butter, too.

@yukimori We keep most of those things in the fridge too, but not peanut butter. Well actually we only put the bread in the fridge when it's a few days old so that it doesn't go mouldy. A loaf of bread lasts a long time in our house because there are only two of us and neither of us eats a lot of bread.

Once a tomato is cut, I do keep it in the fridge also.

@Gina145 We keep our bread in a bread drawer. It keeps fine. We eat sandwiches every day for lunch.

Eggs do not need a fridge and cucumbers do not like it.

It is also valid for all fruits with a kernel (apricots, peaches, plums,...), and for melons and apples. I also never put my eggs in the fridge : they would not last one day more.

@yukimori They are never refrigerated in shops in France and in several countries of the EEC, but many people are keeping them in the fridge. Eggs are not preserved by cold but are sensible to air. In the past in the countryside they were preserving eggs by covering them with sand or ashes, like Chinese are doing with clay for their 100 y.o. eggs.

Eggs in America are always refrigerated. I've never seen them stored any other way, except at my parents' where they go straight from the chicken to the kitchen...

@yukimori You walk into a kitchen in a home in on a farm in the country they will have eggs in a bowl on a table. I don't know what is right or wrong, but I keep mine in the fridge.

I guess it also depends on where you live and what your home provides. I live in a mobile home and for now I don't have A/C so almost everything goes in the fridge or it'll get overheated, mobile homes get really warm inside when you don't have A/C.

You live in Texas w/o a/c - wow, I couldn't deal with that.

I've been keeping my very large can of coffee in the freezer in attempt to keep it fresh but is this too a mistake? Haven't experimented. Why is it going dry if it has a lid on it? Are you sure about this? Wow, I may change this practice now. I hate what the fridge does to banana but the pesky little fruit fly's were annoying me.

Yes I am sure! Don't keep it in the freezer or fridge. Put it in a cabinet out of sunlight.

@AbbyGreenhill Okay will try this and compare. Didn't know about eggs either. Seems a fridge is another cupboard that makes noises.

I've heard that a bit of apple cider vinegar in a shallow bowl with a little bit of dish detergent can do wonders to trap the little buggers. Just set it near the areas they're gathering and they'll be attracted to it.

It dries out in the fridge and what I noticed when I used to do it years ago - it picked up smells from some food.

It dries it out and bread can pick up flavors from other foods very easily.

We have had such a problem with ants this year that I had to store the honey in the fridge.

I do keep most of these things in my fridge. I put the honey in the microwave when I want to use it.

Olive oil will get all sludgy in the fridge. Tomatoes don't taste as good. I did not know that about bread. Of course, I eat gluten free bread and that needs to be in the fridge.
