Are you satisfied with how much you earn?

Back while I had been working at the USPS P&DC, there had been a conversation between 2 of the clerks that I had been working with. One was a PSE, like I had been. The other was a career clerk. During their conversation, they discussed their wages. I already knew that career clerks make almost twice as much per hour than PSEs, so it didn't come as a surprise to me, although it sure did surprise the other clerk! lol However, what did surprise me was when the career clerk laughed and told him that it still wasn't enough! Are you kidding me? Here she makes almost $30 an hour and it still isn't enough? I made half that and I was thrilled to make that much! Oh sure, I would have loved it even more if I could have made what she did, but that's beside the point, seeing as I no longer work there. What about you? Are you satisfied with how much money you make at your job?

There must be very few people indeed who would not say that they could do with more money. They may say "Well, I am earning the going rate for my job." or even "I'm paid more than anyone else in my industry, so I can't really complain." (meaning that they'd really like more money). The truth is that, whatever we earn, we could always do with more - very often, not for ourselves but so that our family could live a little more easily or so that we could give a little bit more to our children or have a better pension when we retire. I have never met anyone yet who, while saying that they're perfectly satisfied as they are, doesn't add "but if more came my way, I could have the house decorated properly" or "I could add an extension" or "I could have a proper holiday" or something like that. It is part of human nature, I think, to always wish for something we don't have, even if we fully accept that we shall never have it. I call it the "I wish I could fly" syndrome.

You are so right about that. I remember a number of years ago watching on the news about a company whose employees were on strike for higher wages. Since, of course, they were unionized they were still getting paid even though they weren't working. The news crew was interviewing some of the picketers and I heard more than one of them complain because there strike benefits were only twenty five dollars an hour which was about half of what they were making when they were working. At the time, where I was living it was impossible to get a job in my career at anything over minimum wage. I was a full charge bookkeeper, not a fast food worker. So I was a little miffed that one, they thought twenty five dollars wasn't enough and two that they thought they deserved more than fifty.

I wish you good luck. Being one who is ill and confined to home, I do understand the issues. I too went without any earning for 12 months during 2013-4 and I know exactly what you mean. Internet may be good for many, but it is not a surety that what you earn today will be what you earn tomorrow. Definitely need to look beyond.

I expect you are right and I really think you probably deserve more. On the other hand I would expect the cost of living is less there as well. Is it?

I remember my mom used to say that she could live like a queen in the Philippines with the money she had earned from her job. And here she had only made a little over minimum wage!

Well, you need to know a little synopsis about me - I am ill, at home - there was a time when I was on bed for 8 months and have been at home since then.. I work as an individual and there is no support for me - professionally, financially (of course my wife pays the house rent and we share 50% for food). Now, I know my limitations. I dont have wants/desires today. As such all I need is some money such that I can stand on my own - I pay Internet, Electricity, my Medicine and Medical Expenses Plus that 50% for food and I can buy my wife some clothes during at least two festivals, take her out to some restaurant at least once a month. If my monthly earnings stabilize, I am happy with what I earn. Unfortunately, this doesnt happen and there are months when there are no jobs/assignments for me (as last year, I was practically without any job for 12 months). Still, my charges and pricings for the things I do remain the same and I dont need more. I know, this might sound insane, but this is how things are for me. I will only increase my rates when I am sure that I cannot survive without opting for a hike in my earnings.

Dear Sidhu, I understand how it is difficult to survive without a regular job or income. However, I know that you learnt to live happily whatever income you have or adjust in life. This is life and I hope there will be better days for you in future.

@Sreekala I am at that stage in life where this seems apt - "Cut your dress according to the cloth" - there was a time when I could say, get the cloth according to your size/requirements

Difficult question. I do know that my company pays above average. So working at another company would never be an alternative for me since I think that my current wage is "smart money" as Americans might say. I also fought for an increase and will get a pay rise in spring. They sent me to another city, cut my gas money and expected more difficult work from me in a bilingual office. When they started to praise me because they are so happy to have me, I started to demand more money In the past, I would have been very hesitant to do so. But I have learned that in business, you have to behave like a man. My husband has also fought for years to get a pay rise. Women tend to be content with less money and afraid to ask their boss. Men just do it.

@Unforgettable_Raja I think that Topffer was translating "L'un dans l'autre" (or something similar) which is a French idiom meaning the same as the English "One way or another"! Yes, M. Topffer is very good at stimulating conversation (and has very good English, too, I may say!)

That's true. Of course most people would probably use it for vacations, Christmas gifts, redecorating the house, and whatnot. As for me, I'd love to make enough so I could take care of my mom (who as you know has dementia) as well as set up a fund for my adult (and very severely autistic) son, because lord knows my husband and I won't be around forever.

I don't work outside the home, as I am retired. I must say though, that I don't earn a lot, but it all adds up in the end. I only do things online. besodes, the fixed income that I get every month. I am glad that I am making anything at all, especially in this economy. Anything is better than nothing.

I have had highs and lows in my life. Highs were really highs, and I thought sometimes that I was earning too much for what I was doing, and lows really too low to live correctly. I have done a lot of day job just to eat when I was a student. After college, I have decided that I would do only jobs interesting for me, and I have accepted to work at low wages times to times only because the job was exciting. One in the other, I can say that I am satisfied with my life if I am not always satisfied with what I earn.

I'm not. I feel like in my field I do the grunt work, I get my hair pulled and get bit and get spit on and puked on. And while I make good money (Between $16 and $22 per hour) the people who just sit at their desk and do the paperwork make probably twice that. And my hours are all over the place.

Since I don't work outside the home. I would have to say yes. However, it never hurt to have more money. One thing I have learned though, the more money you make/have the more you can spend. So if you average it out. It comes to about the same.

I never been greedy for money. But there have been financial crisis and I wished to get more income to overcome those. All are part of life and those phases also changes. Since we are living in a place where cost of living is high, especially for the education of children, the income may not be sufficient to meet the both ends.

Most people are not satisfied, but you have to balance between your capability and living support. In most cases, we have to start from a lower level. For better opportunities, learning and practice will accompany us for a long time. A better pay might come if you are lucky, but surely you have to be ready as well.
