We are starting to hear more train whistles now that it is coming into the season of harvesting crops. Soon the corn and soy will be ready for harvest and then off to the railroad for delivery. Something like that song that Johnny Cash sang "Let the Train Whistle Blow'. Some people who live close to the train tracks become upset with the noise of the train and here they can be very long trains. Do you have lots of trains near where you live.

@LadyDuck I can imagine it was a nightmare to live so close to the railroad station. I would not want to vacation so close to a railroad station because of the noise.

@Marcyaz Yes, I am glad that we do not hear the trains, I remember a year we had a railroad station close to the hotel where we were vacationing. It was a nightmare.

Yes, I live close enough to the tracks in town that I can hear every time a train passes. I wanted to add both my grandfather's worked for the railroad.

Rusty, it sounds like you don't mind hearing the whistle blowing from the train. Great I bet your grandfather's had some neat stories from their days on the railroad.

@rusty2rusty Sorry to hear your grandfather passed away from leukemia a few years ago and your other grandfather when you were quite young. Did you ever hear any of their stories about the railroad you could share with us?

@rusty2rusty That is a good memory to have of your grandfather at the back of the train and to look to see if you could see him.

We stay about 4 kilometers away from the Railway Tracks and during early morning hours and night, I normally get to hear the trains passby. India is one of the largest railway networks and this city has also too many trains that cross it. One of my cousin sister and her family used to stay very near to the tracks (during 2004-5) and I remember going to their house and stay overnight only to watch trains in the night. Trust me, in the night they really look so very wonderful. One of my dreams during school days was to either become one of those people who check tickets on the train or even an engine driver

I had no idea India had one of the largest railway networks. Were you ever able to become an engineer or or ticket taker on the train.

@thesids Ah even thought you didn't pursue becoming a train engineer you did get to ride in the engine house and even though it was hot inside it was memorable to you. All the wonderful sights must have been amazing. I envy you that trip as it would have been something I would have enjoyed also.

@Marcyaz Nah that remained a dream. I never studied sciences so it was out of question as here, you need to be an Engineer Graduate to apply as a Driver of an Engine. And even I was quite bad at Mathematics so even did not stand a chance to get through the entrance examinations for the ticket examiner aboard a train. However, one of my maternal uncles was a driver for some years and it was a chance that I got into the Engine for about a 300 Kilometer stretch during one of his days. I felt happy that I did not take it up as a profession. There was too little space to move around and to add to my woes, it was terribly hot inside. But yes, despite this, that 300 K, long journey was one of the best I ever had - the scenic views and the fright of looking straight down the Bridges on rivers with almost flooded rivers was worth it.

I think that would be nothing compared to the noise I have to endure here on my block. We have the fire department down the block and they are always go out like every ten minutes. And they blow that annoying horn. Then the police department is around the corner and I hear their sirens. And then there is the ambulances. They scream those sirens all the time. It makes you think that there is an emergency every 5 seconds here. Most of them blow the horns and sirens just to pass the light. Nothing more.

I don't know about that but it would be annoying to have to hear fire engines and police sirens, ambulances screaming their sirens, to bad you can't move to another neighborhood where you don't have all that noise. I guess if you heard a train whistle it wouldn't be so bad compared to what you are hearing now.

@inertia4 Inertia, at least you can close windows and have your air conditioning going to block out some of that noise of the train and its whistle.

@Marcyaz If I had the money I would move tomorrow. But right now I have to deal with what I have. So I keep my windows closed most of the time. And since it's hot out I have the air condition on, so that masks some of the noise outside.

I love trains and the sound of the trains. Yes, we have the train just 50 steps from the apts here. It is the lightrail train though, not commercial freight.

Well that is quite different being light rail rather than commercial freight. I used to love taking the lightrail when I was living in California.

@TiarasOceanView Wonderful but i never heard that as I did not live anywhere near the lightrail so it was a bus than the lightrail and home was vise versa.

We have one close by and can sometimes hear the the whistle as well as the sound it makes as it travels down the tracks. It's quite comforting to me but I'm sure if it was closer it would be annoying.

I am sure if it was closer it would be hard to sleep without being disturbed by the noise which can be annoying. I did not hear the whistle blow early this morning but I know I will be hearing it again soon.

@simone10 This time of year there seem to be more trains than usual I guess because of carrying more freight this time of year.

@Marcyaz Yes, it would definitely disturb sleep. Maybe one would get used to it after a while but I don't know if I could. It seems like everytime I go outside, I hear the train so ours must be a very busy one.

We don't have any trains where I live. But if those people live by them you would think they would get used to the noise by now. I do get stuck behind them alot though when traveling to my mom's as the route i take has tons of train tracks etc.

Some people do get used to the noise but other people for one reason or another don't. I was stuck waiting for trains to pass last year and sometimes it seemed like there was no end in sight.

I am miles away from any railway station but have had enough experience going in and out of them while I was working. I have also travelled on an Amtrak while in the US. I had planned this as I wanted that experience of riding through a straight coast line as sea as company from San Jose to Oxnard.

We have a train about a block away and it is really kind of annoying. They blow their whistle a lot even though they aren't supposed to do it in the city.

Dash, a block away now that is really close and them blowing their whistles even though they aren't supposed to in the city would be very annoying.

@Marcyaz It really is. I think I am pretty immune to it now, but it still is kind of obnoxious. At least I don't have a house that is right up against the train track. That would be even worse.

I lived in Kansas for a few months in 2010. The first place we lived in was a few blocks away from the train tracks, and it was an area where three separate tracks converged at the same intersection. We could hear their horns at all hours of the day or night. Then we moved to a place that was about 50 feet away from one of the tracks in another part of town. There weren't any intersections on that stretch of track, so we wouldn't hear the horns... but there's nothing quite like the rumble of freight trains at all hours of the day and night to keep you on your toes. I lasted about two weeks in that place.

Being that close and hearing trains all night long would drive a person crazy. At least it would me. Thankfully I am not that close to the trains but occasionally I will hear a train whistle around 4:30 in the morning right now but later this year it will also be in the daytime. Two weeks, yahoooeee.

@Marcyaz You know, it's weird but you kind of get used to it after a while. You'd never think that you'd be able to become accustomed to the rumble of huge freight trains like that, huh?

We have occasional trains run nearby, maybe a couple times a week. When the weather conditions are just right at night we can here the Tuesday night freight train rolling by and blowing its whistle along the tracks about two miles away as the crow flies.

My daughter used to live near a train track and it would shake the whole house when one went by. I love to hear the trains going by and the horn.

Kimberly, I have heard that if you live right next to the train tracks it can shake rattle and roll items right off the walls. I am glad to hear you like the trains and the horn as everything has a time and a place for someone.
