A Change of Opinion

Put House Cafe

Today I had lunch in a garden. Well, the former potting shed of a walled garden deep in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside. We used to go there years ago when it was just so much mud frankly. The veg was good though and we liked the owner. However, she was ousted and the place 'improved'. A proper restaurant, called a 'cafe', because that's the pretentious new name for eating places in this country, with the food largely sourced form the garden. The Boss and I had our wedding anniversary meal there a couple of years ago and it was sadly underwhelming although the price was most definitely overwhelming! I took a friend there today, a risk I thought, and we discovered that the food was improved and the prices more reasonable. There's no doubt that on a sunny afternoon the view across the garden is stunning. I ate a Ploughman's Lunch. This consisted of an English goat cheese, a chicken and ham pie and a salad fresh from the garden. My friend had a warm salmon and fennel tart with salad. Being greedy I followed with a fudge and berry torte. All extremely good and at a realistic price. I hope that you enjoyed your lunches today.

I saw the error and corrected it Rosie! Nothing wrong with bagels and cream cheese, although I like a slice of smoked salmon with mine.

MMMM sounds like a great lunch and pleasant atmosphere. It's odd that in your part of the world the more pretentious name is cafe, and here a cafe is a place you can pop in whenever you like and you're likely to need reservations for a restaurant.

That sounds rather good and the setting looks very pleasant. The "Ploughman's Lunch" is probably not what any ploughman would recognise, though, so I think that it was badly described!

Opinions can be changed as long as there is reason for an opinion to be changed! Good that things improved for that cafe rather than the opposite (and often it does become the other way around). So why wasn't I invited?

Glad that the place improved on the food quality and the lower prices.

Hubby took me out for pizza today. Your lunch sounds very good, as well as the friend's lunch. We have very few places nearby to get a good fish meal.I can imagine having a leisurely lunch overlooking the garden.

Not as good as yours! It sounded so wonderful. I had a left over from-last-night sweet potato salad and a packet of banana crisps - called chippies out here!
