Did you ever go through a Goth phase?

I never went through a Goth phase. However, back when I was a teenager, a woman that I had kind of known had thought so... Yes, I had a couple of black outfits. Although I originally got them for a funeral, I still wore them on a regular basis. Hey, they were still perfectly good! Why throw them away or not use them at all? It certainly didn't make me Goth because of it! lol Anyway, I had gone to the dentist office one day. While I was there, sitting in the dentist chair getting a cleaning for my teeth, the dental hygienist had a one way conversation with me. Because I had worn one of my black outfits that day, she automatically assumed that I was going through a Goth phase! lol She must have saw the look on my face, because she said "it's okay" and continued to say that her daughter went through the Goth phase when she was my age! I wanted to tell her different, but like I said I couldn't speak while I was getting a cleaning. So, I just stayed quiet and had a good laugh after I left the dentist office! What about you? Have you ever gone through a Goth phase? Are you going through one now? Do you even know what Goth is? lol

HA! Do they even call it Goth now? Someone told me it's "Emo" now, but I'm not quite sure what the difference is. Anyway. I wore black starting in 9th I think - when those tux shirts were "in" - that didn't look Goth. And I wore lots of black in high school because the guy I had a crush on wore black (isn't that a stupid reason to wear black?) - but I think the styles I wore weren't considered Goth. My hair and makeup was definitely not Goth. But as an artist, there have been times that I've felt like a Goth - I just didn't look it!

"Goth" is more serious and "Emo" became like trying to hard or being so dam moody.

Nope, I never went through a Goth phase, but black does look good on me and I do tend to wear it a lot. There was a point in time where I did wear a bunch of make-up (I do not now), and that tended to be the brightest and most colorful part of my outfit, although it was never as bad as Mimi from "The Drew Carey Show".

I didn't go through a Goth phase although I had friends that were Goth through and through. I think some of them are still are - Goth , I mean. I stopped being friends with them when they refused to go anywhere without their black make-up and black mascara on! I do own and continue to have black outfits. I always wear black but when I don't I wear a really really dark shade of grey or gray. Whatever spelling you prefer!

Nope. I'm actually a huge fan of Gothic music, fashion, art, writing, etc, but I never felt the need to dress the part or wear the label. Besides I think it's more fun to see the confused expressions from people who think I can't listen to Bauhaus because I'm not wearing enough black.

I hate stereotypes like that. Just because you wear black clothes shouldn't mean that you're "goth" ("goth" is used wrong here, too). Stuff like that has turned into some weird bastardization of its original form. I find that shocking when people could just find what true Goth culture is all about without effort in a time like this. Anyway, I don't call it a Goth phase - it's just a "phase". Everybody just goes through emotional and mental growth throughout their life times and adolescence is a time when those kinds of changes manifest the most - so you see teenagers adhering to certain subcultures here and there (including Goth).

I don't like stereotypes either. Still, I don't think she meant any harm by it.

I kind of went through an Emo phase lol...I think all teenagers go through something, they try and find themselves, and goth is one of the phases you may go through even thought people tend to overthink any phase of growing up as a goth phase

@allen0187 I'm not really sure why but teenagers tend to be over dramatic and "connect" to over dramatic themes like emo and goth stuff

Given my love of all things horror my Goth phase is life-long. When wearing non-black I call myself plain clothes division Goth.

I do wear a lot of black clothing. Black T-shirts/sweatshirts that is. But no, I never got into the whole goth thing. Where the lips are painted black, the heavy black eye liner and mascara. It wasn't for me.

To be honest I have no idea what a Goth phase is, so I do not know if I ever went through a goth phase. I wait to know more.

I can say I never went through a goth phase. I never understood why someone would want to deliberately want to change their style. I do wear black clothes, but they don't give off a Gothic vibe.

I think that it is normal and natural for people to change their styles, especially as they grow and evolve. Most people are continuously learning and changing, so it is natural for their tastes and comfort levels to change over time as well. In addition, people tend to get tired with the same things all the time, so it stands to reason that clothes and hair styles would also get boring and require change over time.

I wish I had gone through a Goth phase but I wasn't into make up or eyeliners back then. I was probably more emo inside than Goth outside back in college. Lol. We had a schoolmate who sported the Goth look though so I think that was enough for me back then.

I guess you can say I'm still in a goth "phase" I know a lot of people that went through this phase. It's a teenager thing I guess. I got called goth for wearing a black shirt, and I was told I looked preppy in a white shirt (both paired with jeans) so I guess don't take things people say to heart lol
