Do you have the courage to make a change?

When I bought this computer the first of the year it was running windows 8.1. I had trouble figuring out how to do simple things with it when I was looking at it in the store but I eventually got somewhat familiar with the way it was set up. The problem was my last computer was running Vista and windows 8.1 was set up completely different. I even had trouble figuring out how to shut it down when I was through. But the salesman showed me where the shutdown sequence was so I went ahead and bought it. The price was right and I needed a computer. I soon found out that although I did figure out how to navigate this operating system I knew I would never like it. Then I got an email that offered me a free upgrade to windows 10. All I had to do was reserve my copy and when it was released it would be uploaded to my my computer. Then all I had to do was decide when to install it. So I reserved my copy and waited for the download. In the mean time I read every article I could find about the new windows program. There were some good reviews and some not so good. so I wasn't sure I had the courage to install it. I would not want to lose all the data I had already accumulated but I was assured by windows that my data would be preserved. I kept putting off installing it although I have had the download for several weeks now but this windows 8.1 was getting more and more aggravating, And it was so slow to boot up when I turned the computer on. Finally, tonight I bit the bullet and installed windows 10. So far it seems to be working okay. Pages are loading faster than they ever did and a lot of the glitches I had been seeing seem to have disappeared. I've got to restart the computer again though so my virus protection can update for the new operating system.. I also need to do a little tweaking to get the programs and apps I want where I can find them easy. So far though everything seems okay. I will keep you posted as I use it more and see how it's going to act.

I'm a little more cautious than that. I guess it's because I'm not sure what's going on inside the computer. I understand quite a bit on how to manipulate the software, but I don't mess with the hardware much. I used to fix computers when they were running DOS or 95/98 but they have gotten so advanced I am out of my depth.

You are spot on Naman! You lose data only on the root drive when you format or reinstall an OS. The data on the other drives stays intact, unless you format every one of those drives.

Eventually you will find the need to upgrade. I thought I had found the perfect OS in 98, but computers that I had to send reports to finally wouldn't even talk to my computer so I had to upgrade. Trust me, I was kicking and screaming but I still got dragged into the 21st century.

But eventually they will cut life support for it. Moreover, the security is old, new viruses that are more vicious have emerged. It is security of OS + security of a good antivirus + security of web browser + security of the site that you visit in total that gives you about 75 percent protection because 100 percent protection is a myth. Yes, you can keep that security level higher by being cautious in which sites you open, and how you open emails.

I've heard mostly good things about Win 10 and so much bad about Win 8.x that I never wanted that one ever. My Netbook runs Win 7, so when I heard that Win 10 was a free upgrade, I immediately applied for and started to upgrade to Win 10. Unfortunately, it got very little way into the checking process before it came up with the stark message: "Your CPU is not compatible with this version of Windows" so that was that. I'm stuck with Vista on my desktop (and, no, it won't run Win 7) and Win 7 on my Netbook, which is so slow it's practically unusable. I'm now toying with the idea of installing Linux on one or other of them, since I can't afford a new machine at the moment!

@savak03 Linux is a good operating system to use on an older computer because the operating system is much smaller than Windows. It can also tolerate slower CPUs and uses rather less working space for its house-keeping. Most people who use a computer just for the Internet and maybe some word-processing and image editing would find it easy because the GUIs available are all pretty similar to a Windows/Mac interface but it's probably worth getting to know at least a little of the command line way of working to get the best out of it.

@owlwings Thanks, that's good to know. When I finally get that project up and running I may be back to ask some questions if that's okay.

I was going to give linux a try one time. I even went so far as to get the disc to install it with but I never did get a computer put together to put it on. I didn't want to put it on the same computer I was running windows on though I know many people do. I just can't see it working correctly right next to it's biggest enemy. lol. I still have that disc and some unused older computers. Maybe I will get around to it now that I'm not working full time anymore.

I would not recommend 8 to my worst enemy, but 10 has proven itself to me. It has literally saved my sanity. It runs a lot like the older versions of windows, (I never had 7), but it still gives you the flexibility to use apps.

@savak03 I have been using it for a week. It took a few days for me to get used to it, navigating can be an adjustment. I noticed though that it is easy to use and still has the old windows feel. I still need to learn more about it. Will check out videos on how to maximize windows 10.

@Beatburn Let us know if you find anything interesting in your research. I would also like to get the most out of my computer. So if there is anything I need to tweak to get it to perform even better I would love to give it a try.

I am glad everything has gone smoothly for you... my friend bought a new computer and that had windows 8 on and they changed to vista I think ,she's much happier now.... I think its good to try new things,...but if it doesn't suit us, I think its ok to go back to what you were doing or try something else.... again..

Vista wasn't a bad program. I had a computer with it on it as well. But I was forced to shift up to XP by the companies I worked for. That came after vista didn't it? I'm having trouble keeping them in order now. I hope that this one really is the last incarnation of windows like they promiced.

My PC is still running XP but my Mac (my preferred machine) is running OSX 10.8.5. I keep getting notices to upgrade to Yosemite but I'm loath to do it for the same reasons you were.

I'm afraid I don't know much about the Mac system. I did play around with an Apple in the very early days, back when TRS80 was the computer to have. I remember that their operating system worked totally backwards to the windows system. Anyway, I didn't keep it long.

That was why I wanted to stay with 98 but I didn't get a choice. I remember my husband, one time said I should learn AC and Refrigeration repair. I had already learned auto mechanics, cooking, crocheting, painting, general plumbing, and some carpentry. I told him I would not take on any other schooling because as sure as I learned how to do something else, someone would expect me to start doing it.

I don't know for sure because everyone is different but some of the problems people had with 10 is they didn't lay their groundwork correctly. Before I ever installed 10 I made sure all my updates were current and that I had a good virus protection program in place. Then I started the download and just sat back and waited until it was through completely before I tried to do anything with it. Then I followed the directions it gave and didn't assume I knew what I was doing on my own. It has already solved a couple of problems I was having with 8.1 and I have found NO glitches so far. I can't imagine really, anyone preferring 8 but I guess there are some whose mind works that way.

There are a few things that people complained about (related to security and such) so I read some technical articles and watched a few videos so I knew how to turn of the bad stuff and how to make the best of the upgrade. I like it better than the old one because it has a start menu and it runs nicer on my non-touch computer. It is less "tablet" like and more like a computer.

That may be why I like it so much better. My laptop is a computer not a tablet. 8.1 just didn't work right as far as I'm concerned. No, I don't think I would even want it on a tablet.

I hd windows8.1,and when I chance to downlaod windows 10, I installed it.Ilike it much better than windows 8.1, much better. We all need toget used to it as the new computers have it installed. It seems to okay, and I hope that it stays that way.

@rosekiss If you haven't had any problems yet you should be okay. You strike me as the kind of person who listens to instruction, so if the computer tells you some maintenance needs to be done you will no doubt do it as I have. As long as we follow the directions we should be okay.

@Jlyn10 No, I actually bought this computer after market as they say. I got it at a pawn shop. 175.00 beats the price of a brand new one and it had hardly been used at all.

I didn't even think about my touch pad till you mentioned it but mine is still working. I have a mouse hooked up to my laptop, well a trackball really. I am all thumbs with those touch pads. This particular laptop was supposed to have touch screen but when I got it home I found it it didn't. It's not a software problem. The laptop wasn't equipped with the right screen.

@savak03 My touch pad was working well before I installed the Windows 10 but then I very seldom use the touch pad because I find it easier to move around with the mouse and it's faster to get things done. Didn't you consult the sales person about the touch screen? It probably came with the price and you already paid for it.

I love changes but only if it is for the good and upgrading to Windows 10 was very good. I got it the day it was available and the only problem I had was the paternal controls to set time limts were not working. However, in the last week or so, they fixed it and now it is working perfectly, so I am thrilled to have this new OS..

I have been thrilled with mine too. I had been having some little annoying problems with my printer before I downloaded 10 but could never trace them them down properly. Once I downloaded 10 I tried the printer and the problem box popped up but it walked me right through what I had to do to fix it. It downloaded the piece of the driver that was missing and told me the printer was set up on the wrong port and fixed that. Now it is working fine. I like a computer that can self diagnose and fix the problems it finds.

@savak03 Oh yeah, and if only my computer will find the process that is installing so I can download programs like skype, I would be happy. I don't know if it is a Windows 10 issue or more than likely it is the free Word 365 trial I downloaded that might be the problem. So in just a week, when the trial expires, I am restoring my computer and see if that corrects it.

@Carmelanirel2 It might well be that program that is holding you up. Sometimes a program we download can react badly with what we already have. I have never heard of free word 365 so I don't know what it is supposed to do. It may be conflicting with processes that windows 10 already has installed to do the same job.

I look forward to your updates on this subject. I haven't installed it on my computer yet because I am not sure if it would be better than what I have now, which is Windows 7. I haven't done too much research on it, maybe I need to so I can make my decision.

You lose data only on a root drive when you format, or reinstall an OS. The data on the other drives is pretty safe, unless you go on formatting everyone of them.

I believe you, but I don't have a clue how I would choose which drive I was formatting. These newer computers are not like the monsters we had when I got the wise idea that I wanted to be a computer tech. Anyway, I'm much happier just working with a computer without having to work on them.
