It's Not The Size That Counts

At least, size doesn't matter to my dachshund Bella. My brother often finds things in apartments that residents leave behind. Once, he found this tiny dachshund toy that walks and barks. It is really cute and we thought that Bella would love playing with it. You can see it in the picture I have included. Boy were we wrong. When I put it on the floor, she first sniffed at it and then ran to my bedroom and wouldn't come out until we picked it up off the floor. I was so surprised as dachshunds are known for how fierce they can be and she always acts like she is a big dog. So, we had to put the toy puppy up in the closet so that it is away from her and out of sight. Whenever she hears us say the word puppy in normal conversation, she freaks a little. I guess she still remembers me telling her to go play with the puppy when I originally put the toy on the floor

Someone once said "If you have a dog that weighs less than 50 pounds, you have a cat" lol :) I think that was Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec

@spleendingo1 I haven't heard that phrase before. I did have a dog once who only weight 10 pounds and she did have a lot of the characteristics of a cat.

@simone10 that is adorable. There are certain things that spook our cat Sid and I have to remember what they are. He hates loud noise and if hubby or I drop something he jumps and shoots out the window into the garden like a bat out of hell.

@RasmaSandra Ahh, the poor thing. When Bella was younger, she wasn't afraid of anything. Now that she is older, she is also spooked by loud noises.

@sueznewz2 Bella hates thunder and fireworks. She will go crazy barking. I have to hold her and calm her down.

You can never tell what a dog will like or dislike. She might think you are trying to replace her since she will smell another dog.

@Butchcass4 That toy was found in an apartment probably they had a dog that played with it and it would smell like another dog is why she got going.

It's kinda odd as a toy doesn't smell like another dog it must be the appearance that got Bella going or what else could it be?

@Butchcass4 I think it was because it moved. She wasn't nearly as scared when it was turned off.

Sometimes they are scared of silly things aren't they? My dog would freak out when she see people wearing hoods .. she would bark her head off and hide under some furniture.

@Butchcass4 Maybe it was to her. The poor thing wouldn't come out until she knew that the person had left.

Oh my goodness. I guess seeing a hooded person can be a little scary like what are they trying to hide? My one daughter did that when she was really stressed and I asked her to take it off as it was just weird, so she did. Thankfully.

Maybe she thinks they have brought in another dog, she probably smells another dog on that toy.

@jaboUK I thought she would enjoy it also. She does like her regular toys. Any new toys she gets, she has to take the squeaker out and the stuffing. Then she plays with it afterwards. Her toys look like little road kills

@simone10 yeah, some pups don't like toys that move round. Mine won't play with stuffed toys even those that squeak, when Mykey was alive he never would let her have a toy without completely destroying it. I'm hoping this fall when its cooler I can take her to petsmart and maybe she'll find a toy she likes.

I think it was the appearance as it looks like a dog but it wouldn't necessarily have dog scent on it. But it may have some kind of scent that Bella just doesn't like!

@simone10 I do not like to scare our furry friends. The young cat of my neighbor is cared by the noise of the car doors. I try to calm him, I do not know why he is so scared.

O my goodness your dog is so adorable I can't believe how she reacted to the toy. Animals are so cool. God certainly has a great sense of humor when you look at how He made animals and humans we are all different and unique, just like Bella.

Haha that's very cute. I had no idea a little harmless dachshund toy can intimidate other dogs. Hmm now I wonder if it's the smell of that toy that freaks Bella out.

@crazyhorseladycx Bella has never been a chewer except when it comes to her new toys (Daisy is a different story). She will chew and pull out the squeaker then the stuffing. Afterwards they look like roadkill but she still plays with them.

@simone10 momma had one 'f those weenie dog thingies that's a wind blocker fer yer door - her pups chewed the eyes 'n nose off the poor thing, but'f since left it 'lone. always had purty good luck here with pups 'n they quickly learnt what was there's 'n what t'weren't. think in all the years i've only had 2 stuffed critters who got mangled. 'course, ya learn with pups that'cha can't supervise 'em 24/7 'n if ya got somethin' 'f special meanin' to ya, ya best jest put it outta reach.
