Does the news on the tv tell the truth?

This is my opinion on the news... it should prob be sent out this way.

Does the news on the tv tell the truth? How many times have you watched the news report on a situation, went online to read up more, to find out they only told you part of the truth or slanted truth? At the end of this I will post an example of what I mean. But trust me on this, I have written as a journalist for two different newspapers, and yes I know print media is slowly dying, in the physical form, not my point at the moment. My point is, that it is very easy to put bias on things, changing a headline from "Cows escaped only to be found later munching on corn crop" to something like Cows escape, Sheriff's department no where to be found for hours, are we safe?" were quite common for some. See the cows got loose but were safe in another field, while the sheriff's department was tied up in a multi car crash. So yeah, they weren't on site for awhile, but there were reasons, reasons that weren't mention in headline number 2. Oh no, that focused on part of the story, not the full story.... And below, the big example: 1. The couple that refused to bake a wedding cake for the gay couple in Oregon. See there was outrage against the government and the gay couple over this. But there are some other facts that don't get very much attention. There are laws regarding discriminating against people based on certain things, if you don't agree with the laws fine, work on getting them changed, but we can't pick and choose what laws we follow because of our beliefs. Secondly, that baker couple did some things worse than simply refusing to make that cake. They could have politely declined, and stated that they didn't feel it was a good fit for them at that time, or that they weren't able to to for an undisclosed reason and helped them find another baker. But no, they didn't. And when they found out that the couple had filed some formal complaints, they went on Facebook, and published the complaint, the couples home address, email, and all of their information.... which caused that couple to receive an influx of....of nasty hate mail. The couple had foster kids, foster kids who have information, and sometimes even locations of them, kept secret, because of unsafe family situations. They now risked losing those kids, because of a family's choice to air dirty laundry in such a manner (so much for turning the other cheek, and other things I remember hearing are often preached about)....... Anyways my point here is, I heard none of this on the news. The news wanted me to react and think a certain way, so it showed me things to make me do such. I don't appreciate such bias, and slanted. I want facts, not opinions, and not half truths.

I know from reading the news over the years how things can be worded to affect only a part of the story and it is basically up to us to try to get the whole story without coming to conclusions of what facts are presented to us.. Sad we have to do that instead of it laid out in the first place..

First, I do not have a tele and if I had one, News would be the last thing on my list to watch. I would prefer watching those useless adverts instead. At least there is some glamor - at least they have some tangy catch lines, some entertaining music or even (if everything fails) a product on them if nothing else. News on Tele or even on printed media is always one sided - and in case there is a panel discussing it, it is only their views. Nothing interesting at least for me.

We use ours for movies and things more than live tv, or shows on food or home improvement for the most part.

I have read a lot about this story and the bakers did not start a hate campaign against the lesbian couple on Facebook or anywhere else on the net. There was, however, one started against the bakers who received some horrid, graphic and violent threats against them. I don't know where you read that, but no one had to give out their names, the lesbian couple filed a lawsuit. All court documents are public record, their names would already be in that public record. The bakers sent cakes to a bunch of gay rights organizations that said "We Love You" and tried to open the lines of communication. I don't know where you read that, but I have never seen any of that said about this case and the behavior of the bakers involved.
Gay rights organizations are responding in a variety of ways after Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of the Sweetcakes by Melissa bakery, sent cakes and letters out to numerous LBGT groups in an effort to deliver what the Kleins contend was a powerful messag

@Jessicalynnt There's a slight difference in this case, because the gay couple were regular customers of the bakery prior to having asked for a wedding cake, and they were never refused service. But the bakers didn't want to make the cake, because they felt that meant facilitating a ceremony that came up against their personal religious beliefs. It was, in a way, taking a part in it, and they didn't feel their religious conscience allowed them to take part in an active way - like making the wedding cake. The couple, who had always been customers of the bakery, decided to sue them. There probably was a lot of hate directed at all parties involved, but it didn't have to be an issue if there had been mutual respect, including respect for the Kleins' religious beliefs. The Kleins never refused service to anyone based on their orientation, they just refused to facilitate a wedding.

Been awhile, I'd have to do some digging, I remember seeing interviews and images of the facebook pages on the bakers part, info that has since been taken down. But this proves my points about the news. It's hard to know what's true, and whats slanted and whats made up!

and I am sure there was a hate campaign the other direction, people can't just agree to disagree and be respectful about it. I honestly thought people could refuse to serve anyone, after all it is their business, as long as they didn't come out and say, it's because you are old, or your skin is green, or whatever. I also think that this could have been just handled, and had no real need to become the media circus that it was, for either side.

This makes it very hard to determine what is real, and so many people just believe it without actually thinking on it or looking into it.

You are spot on there, Jessa! With the mushrooming of tabloid channels, which are not averse to concealing facts, or giving a slant to many news items; the telly certainly has lost a lot of its credibility, and it is sad.

@Jessicalynnt Even the print media looks suspect, at times; with the advent of net, one can easily check the veracity of any news item.

Tolerance, acceptance, forgiveness. What we all need. As to the news, the medium is the message. The news is chosen for us.

@Jessicalynnt precisely. Critics think it's only FOX news but I disagree. Every news network is motivated by ratings. What sells or what gets noticed becomes news.

@Beatburn I think some are generally more fact and less drama oriented. But many show things with whatever slant the owners of that company want

I think that some stations do this and some do not. I have found ones close and national that I feel I can trust and I listen to them. It is something we have to learn for ourselves.

this is true, I have found some, Fox I dont think being one of them, to be less slanted over what they say. Some also control this based on what gets more or less air time.

TV news are the one that are more troublesome. The reality is different. The media has made money from selling the issues of other people. So I always try to cross checck if the news is right or not. I don't think we should be worrying much about the TV news these days. I guess we can just ignore and wait for multple internet sites to cross reference the news.

I would say most new stories are slanted. If you want the news from various places and put all the info together, you might get a 80 percent chance of getting the story.

Very true, and very sad, it makes me mistrust everything I see on tv and most of what I read unless i can get what I read from several sites with no relation to each other.

I agree with you entirely. They should definitely stick to reporting the truth and leave the opinions out of it. Saddest thing is that it's actually mainstream and no one ever shares the truth right way.

I think that it is a sad state of afairs when we are manipulated and lied to by those who are supposed to protect and serve us. When reading or watching anything today, most people take what they are seeing with a pinch of salt. I often look around to see what else is going on, as a lot of the conflict stirred up by the media is there to divert our attention from something else.

or that they want us to side on one side or another for some reason. I'd rather just know the facts, I don't even mind speculation if it is identified as such
