The Continuing Crisis for my son and his family

In my previous post I told you about my daughter in law going to the ER for carbon monoxide poisoning. As is normal, the city inspector had to come in. I guess when they got their house they did not have to have all the usual inspections. They bought it "as is". They got grants, and a mortgage for the house. They have had some structural work done.
The house has been pronounced unsafe for humans to live in. The electricity is all outdated, needs new breaker box. Where it comes from the pole, it is wired wrong.
The gas is plumbed in wrong. They have to have that fixed and a new hot water heater installed. That was the source of the leak.
Structurally the house is unsound. Basement and porches need extensive work.
The sewer is plumbed in an illegal fashion.
Tomorrow they will meet with the homeowners insurance to see what is to be done about all of this.
Meanwhile they can stay at her parent's house, and the dog can go stay in a crate in the garage or be tied out.
The cats cannot go. So I have three furry guests tonight besides Princess Inky.
Winnie is some kind of a short hair Siamese mix. I would say maybe six months old. His color points are striped.
Buffy and Sky appear to be domestic long hair and are maybe three months old. They are used to a lot more attention than they get from us here.
Buffy is a marmalade colored kitty. Sky is white for now. I would not be surprised if he were to show up with peach color points in the future.

Oh no that's horrible! They must be so stressed out. How long have they lived there?

Traci bought the house just before they got married two years ago. She is very stressed. It is hard to tell with my son. We have been through some hard times in the past, he will probably internalize the stress.

@katsmeow1213 Traci has tween age daughters. Lots of pets too, but this worked out well.

@GardenGerty Guys do that. I'm sure everything will work out allright for them. They don't have kids, do they? It's so much harder when kids are involved. Hopefully they're back on their feet in no time.

They will be working on what to do today. They have homeowner's insurance. They have lots of family support as well. I hope my daughter in law's dad can give them some good advice.

Oh wow that sounds awful. Sounds like an old house that is very much in need of updating to get to be safe with todays standards. The things they allowed years ago are considered fire hazards now a days. My parents house recently had issues with the electrical and had to spend a lot of money to get it fixed. They had to have other things fixed before the electrian would even turn the power back on because he said things were so unsafe. At least they will be safe now. The situation your sons family in sounds terrible. They probably wish now that they had a better inspection done before they moved in. Chances are they never would have bought the house or would have paid much less and have had the repairs done before moving in. Good luck to them. I look forward to hopefully only good news from here on out about them.

Oh that's terrible news about the house. On the one hand, it's good that they know the dangers so they won't put themselves at risk, but on the other hand, that's going to be very expensive. I don't know why they didn't need an inspection, but obviously they got cheated by the seller.

They bought a short sale, as is. I think the bank just wanted it taken off their hands. I wonder if they should have been told to get busy putting money into the infrastructure of the house.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter in law, I hope she gets better soon. I just came across another story about carbon monoxide poisoning coming from the water tank.

This is not uncommon with gas appliances. She is feeling better health wise but devastated by all the repairs that are necessary.
