A possum got into my house

I leave my back door open for the dogs to go in and out, and i have alwyas left it open until we go to bed. Well, one night, I was sitting in my chair watching tv, and I heard something in the dog's dish. I didn't know what it was, so I turned on the kitchen light, and when I saw it crouching in the corrner, the first thing I thought of wasto to shew it out with the broom. It just wouldn't go, so it started running around in the kitchen, and I had to stop it from getting into the rest of the house, so I got the broom, and scooted it on the floor by the door, hoping it would leave. Instead it was curled up in a ball like they do, and it was showing its teeth. I figured i bettter not try to pick it up by the tail as it would probably swing around and bite me. I found a showvel that I scooped it up on, and threw it outside. I thought I had killed it, but I han't. It was playing possum, {hence the name}, and if did leave as I knew where it was, and the next morning it wasn't there. It could have bit the dogs or me, even though it was a baby, and I am just thankful that it didn't. Since then, I close the door before dark, and I also pick up the both dogs dishes. That is one night I will never forget, as I have lived here over eiight years, and this is the first one that I have seen, let alone come into the house..

At least you were able to throw the possum out of your door, I have read that they can be pretty aggressive.

@LadyDuck Unfortunately, here in the US, we have them all over. Now, that I have seen one, and I know they are around, I keep my door closed at night, so they can't invade my home.

@rosekiss We do not have possum in my country. I have only seen them in documentaries.

It's a good thing you were able to scoop it out of your house without you nor your dog getting hurt. So, don't forget to close your doors always .

I am glad too. It was just a baby, but still, it could have become aggresive too. When I saw its teeth, when it was curled in a ball, I figured I better not try to pick it up by its tail.

@SIMPLYD I am glad that I didn't try to pick it up either, as those teeth looked pretty sharp, and I didn't want the teeth to take a bite out of me or the dogs.

How I wish a possum will come to my house! Too bad I live in a big city, and I live in high rise apartment. it will take a very brave creature to climb up flights of stairs or to take elevator and come to my house. Sometimes I really hope that there are wild animals in my area.

I like wild animals but only if they stay in the wild, and don't come near my home, or wander inside of it. We don't have wild animals like bears, coyotes or things like that, and I wouldn't want to see any of them either. They need to stay inthewild and not venture into neighborhoods, as that is a danger to humans and to the animals as well.

I've never seen a possum, it must have been terrifying to find it in your house. You were lucky that it stayed out of the house after the incident and never came back. I have never lived in a ground floor apartment so the only animal that I've found in my house was the neighbor's cat. It was passing through the balconies and I found it under the bed a couple of times.

We do have cats in the neighborhood, but with my two dogs, none of them would stay around longs.

@besweet That had to be frustrating to always have to call the neighbor to get their cat. I think they need to keep the cat in the house, so it doesn't keep wandering and climbing the balcony.

@rosekiss lol.. You are lucky to have the dogs for protection by wild animals or your neighbor's pets. I didn't have a problem with the cat coming over, but she was white and fluffy and when I saw her the first time I wanted to scream until I realized it was her. Also, I had to call the neigbors every time and ask them to come over and get her back.

I am happy that you have no fear of these things and you could scoop him and throw him out of the house. Now that you have learned your lessons.. Its better to be careful. Glad it wasn't something dangerous that entered your home.

I am too, but they can be aggresive, and I didn't want to take the chance. I didn't want to harm it in anyway, just get it out of my house.

@sofssu I did at first, as I didn't know what it was, until I put the kitchen light no, then I saw it was a possum, as it had a white face, and a rats tail. I wasn't about to try to catch it that is for sure.

@rosekiss I am glad you had no fear doing that some people seem to freak out if they see critters inside their homes.

This reminds me of when a bird flew inside our chimney and came into our house!

I have never had birds in my house, but when I was still married and we lived in Indiana, a bat got into the house, and that was scary, as it kept flying around our heads and wouldn't let us move. Once I turned the light on, it dropped, and we got rid of it.

@gudheart Believe me I did. I hate bats and I never want that to happen again, Where I live now, there aren't any bats, thank goodness.

I can count on one hand the number of times I have ever even seen a possum, and definitely never had one near the house. I think you did a great job just to get it out of the house. I would have been running around wondering what to do.

Once I saw the broom, then I knew what I had to do, as i had to act quickly, so I or my dogs wouldn't get hurt.

I have heard reports of them getting quite vicious - glad you were able to get rid of it safely.

You got that right. When I saw it crouched in the corner of my cupboards, I knew I had to get it out of there somehow, so when I got the broom, that coaxed it out of the corner so I could scoot it to the door with the broom, then scoop it up and throw it outside.

Poor little critter smelt that food! He was probably just as frightened as you were but, yes, they can do so much damage.

Once I heard something in the dog dish, I immediately turned on the light, and then I saw it. I immediately took the food up off the floor, and got the broom to lure it out of the corner, and out the door. It didn't go out the door though, as it started running through the kitchen. I had the broom in my hand, so I just put the broom in front of it to scoot it to the door and outside. I am glad that i had the broom as it helped me get rid of it.

I suppose the poor thing was scared. Where were your dogs? I would have thought that they would have chased it out.

My dogs were outside at the time, taking care of business, so they never saw it. They would have barked at it, and scared it out possiblly.

That had to be scary, especially with it showing it's teeth. The first thing I would have been scared of was rabies.

Where I am at, we don't have raccoons, and that is another animal that I wouldn't want to tangle with. My ex almost tangled with a raccoon when she had babies, and I never saw anyone run as fast as he did/

I probably would have had a heart attack seeing a possum in my kitchen. Thankfully you were able to get it out of the house

I din't know what it was at first, as I thought it was a big rat, and I was partially right, as they do have a rats tail. I just had to get it out of the house so as not to hurt me or the dogs.
