Getting Paid To Poo?

While most of us take toilet training for granted, what about those who don't readily have sanitation at hand? India is one of those countries, whose populations are estimated at 1.1 billion worldwide, who don't have ready access to these facilities,or lacks the 'toilet culture' It is one of several countries that consider 'open defecation' the norm, so fields, bushes, water or other open spaces, become the recipients, of this everyday event, which is becoming a huge health problem, for such countries. Hundreds of thousands of children die every year because of diseases transmitted through human waste. In India this practice is attributed to almost half the population, even when facilities are available to them. A state council in the Gujarati city of Ahmedabad has come up with an idea, which you might call bribery,... to pay children to defecate in public facilities, and hopefully change the culture,... campaigners are hoping that by doing so,the 200,000 or more children, who die every year from stomach related health problems, can be drastically reduced, and possibly also change parental habits....

This problem is actually the Root cause for the outbreak of many deadly diseases in rural India.... This step hopefully would lead to a cleaner and healthier city. :)

This is a serious problem, I wonder if the Italian Government should bribe tourists, so they stop to defecate in the public places in Rome, Venice and Florence.

I think we need something like that...especially relating to truck drivers, auto drivers, vegetable vendors...etc.

Teaching people not to put the latrine too close to the waterhole is also a good idea...

Not just that, proper maintenance of these facilities will also play a key role in its success as an initiative. People are also discouraged to use these facilities due to their abysmal state ( Trust me, it'll give u a heart attack if someone ever described it to you ). However, solely authorities should not be held responsible for the same. The users and the community should come forward in maintaining it. This way they will really get into the habit of not just using these facilities but also taking care of them.

Can you please give me the reference of the statistics on the basis of which you made the statement that more than half of India prefers the practise of open defecation inspite of having the facilities.
