Why do you Cook?

I cook because I am fascinated by combining different flavours, textures and nutritions (and because I enjoy food). I think I must have always been interested because there is a recipe which I wrote down when I was about five (involving a great deal of parsley and apples - even at that age, I was clearly intrigued by unusual combinations, though I don’t believe we ever actually tried making the recipe!). I suppose that, really, I like to cook because my mother was good at it and enjoyed it (I think that she enjoyed baking most. Feeding the family during wartime was just a necessity which she accomplished with success). My favourite types of dish today are soups (French Onion is one I do often because it’s cheap and easy, if time-consuming, and is different every time; Fennel and Coconut is one which was a modest success in creativity and fusion of flavours) and casserole dishes - I am a big fan of slow cooking. Some people cook because they always have done so and because people need feeding, others can do basic stuff but are frightened to try anything more complicated and some don’t cook because, I suppose, they have no need to and baked beans on toast or scrambled eggs is just about their limit. What are your own feelings about cooking? Do you like to cook for the sake of it, do you simply do it as a necessary part of house-keeping or is it something you try to avoid? Who is the main cook in your household and why? Do you have preferences or strengths in what you cook? Mr O. would love to know!

I cook mainly so me and my family can eat. Actually I enjoy cooking, I can find it therapeutic at times. I also like the way certain aromas carry through the house, giving it a nice home smell. I cook a lot of Cajun meals, along with a lot of meat and potato type meals.

@owlwings Yes, that is true enough. I tend to be the same way, especially if it is something that took most of the day to cook. By time it's ready I done had enough of it, but as long as the family enjoys it that is all that truly matters to me.

I'm tired of cooking. I enjoyed it for awhile and liked to try new things.. but most of the time it's just a chore that I have to do. I'm generally the main cook of the house. Hubby will help when he's home. My daughter has started helping occasionally. She enjoys baking and would enjoy cooking if it were more by choice and less by necessity just because I'm too tired. I try to get more easy to make meals so I don't have to cook quite so often.

I like to make easy meals and freeze them in 2 person portions (there's usually only two to feed here). That way, if I feel too tired to cook, we can just take a box out of the freezer and microwave it. It takes almost the same time (and much less energy) to make a Cottage Pie, a Macaroni Cheese or a Brazilian Beef stew for 6 or 8 as it does to make one for two people. I have even considered doing this as a 'service' for my children, who all live quite close by and who are working their socks off, so have less time to cook than I do. I haven't got past the stage of suggesting it and providing them with some possibilities yet. I have to work out the price of the ingredients and cost each meal!

@owlwings I wouldn't know how to cook for 2. I have a family of 7. I occasionally try to cook a few things up in advance.. if nothing else I at least frequently try to precook the meat I'm going to use to save a step.. but most of the time my days are just too busy, including my weekends. We didn't get home today until 7pm because of soccer games, tomorrow we'll have band and be out until 9pm, Wednesday we'll have soccer and be out until 7... even Saturdays and Sundays we're busy because of band.

I love to cook provided I have help around to do the boring chores. I am more of a director. But I simply love creating new combinations, chopping and changing recipes. Cabbage salad is my own creation and so is the method to extract fresh juice from fruits that grow in my garden.

The simple reason is because we need meals, and it would never occur to me to pay for a takeaway or similar instead of doing it myself. Actually I enjoy cooking, although I don't like it so much if I absolutely have to do it every day. I like to try new things. My partner also cooks and also likes to play around with ingredients but some of his experiments are a bit too weird for me!

I'm often accused of making things too 'spicy' (meaning too much chilli), so I have to dumb down what I would really like to cook. Usually, that just means leaving out most or all of the chilli/chipotle/cayenne.

@Hatley For a Mexican to say that chillis are hot surely means that they were fiery!

My husband is the cook in my house. When younger he was in the food service and restaurant work and learned how to make everything. He loves to cook, makes amazing meals and I love that he loves to cook. When he was working full time as the children grew I cooked and I can do that well but I don't enjoy it so when he retired the Kitchen was his and so is the shopping. It works for me...

Although I like to cook, it is something which is strictly a hobby for me. I certainly couldn't work as a chef though I have thought it might be fun to run a sort of table d'hôte at home for, maybe, 8 to 10 people, once a week

I do all the cooking. I cook because the family needs to eat. I cook because I like to eat. I cook because I like it when people like eating what I like to cook. I like being able to make exactly what it is that I have a craving for, just when I want it.

If you have a chance to travel to China, I am sure you will enjoy all the soups there. i love soup too, and the traditional Chinese dinner is rice, soup and 2 or 3 other dishes. It is a balance meal, but it takes time to prepare. I think many people in China and Asia do not keep to the traditional diet. They are more likely to eat out or they just have a soup and rice.

I like the Chinese food we get in England but I suspect that it's not at all the kind of thing that would be prepared at home. I also like to cook with a wok and I find that it's the preparation of the ingredients which takes the time. The cooking itself is very quick.

I think that cooking is one of the most creative things one can do. And also, I love to try my taste buds with new dishes. I am not much into cooking sweets as they need recipes. I love to look into my pantry and frigde and then ask myself what should I try

Sorry to hear that you have Crohn's disease. It's a very trying and debilitating complaint and, unfortunately, there's no cure as yet. I hope that you are getting the right medication to control it, at least.

Both my hubby and I cook cause we need to eat! He made a very tasty cheeseburger tonight. I made the buns and he included bacon that I bought at a local butchers. Sweet and juicy home tomatoes, and home made mayo that had one of our hen's eggs in it. We are proud and pleased to really have a hands on approach to fueling our bodies.

I have not yet tried making buns for burgers. My bread is definitely getting better but, since I usually use wholemeal flour, my baps/buns are not quite as light as they should be for burgers.

@owlwings I use half good for us stuff and half white flour when I bake- bran and wheat germ and wheat flour and flax seed. I also bake buns not loaves cause buns are easiest to cut. Turns out fine when paired with ground meat.

I am very fond of biriyani and have made it a number of times. The version I know, however, is the Northern Indian/Mughal/Persian layered kind which takes rather a long time to prepare properly and has very little chilli in it. I have eaten biriyani in Indian restaurants here, where it is cooked rather more quickly like a pilau (pilav, pilaff or plov, depending on the country), I believe, and, so far, has not been nearly as good as the ones I have made! We have a small local 'Indian' restaurant (actually, I believe that the people who run it are from Bangladesh) which has a very good chef and I quite often visit it and am inspired to try to make some of the dishes myself. Our local post office/shop also has a good range of ingredients, so I can find many things which aren't readily available in Britain.

Looking through the responses here, it is encouraging to see how many say that it is the man who cooks in their household. Not so very long ago, any man who knew how to do much more than boil an egg or fry a piece of bacon was considered an oddity (or was a professional chef) and kept his skills very much under his hat. Then, I suppose, barbecues became popular and 'camp fire cooking' got upgraded to something respectable a man could do standing up and acting like a 'priest of burnt offerings'. Finally, it became acceptable (if not quite yet 'respectable') for men to admit to culinary skills and now, of course, most male cooks have fully come out of the closet!
