The last lunch menu (on the Titanic, too!)

Who would ever thought that one of the Titanic survivors happened to be a menu for the last ever lunch served on the ship? The menu belonged to Abraham Lincoln Salamon, who survived after boarding the notorious lifeboat, Lifeboat No. 1 that carried 12 passengers on it. The yellowed piece of paper was put up for auction recently and bought for $88,000 by an anonymous buyer. In case you're wondering, some of the items on the menu are grilled mutton chops, smoked sardines, corned beef, and ox tongue. What's the most crazily priced item you've ever heard of?

I know right. I guess auctions like that are for people who don't know what else to do with their money.

That is extremely expensive. If I had that kind of money, I would spend it on something else, like helping others in need.

@cahaya1983 You know, if I was rich, I would probably end up broke because I would want to help everybody I could.

@simone10 Aw, that's nice of you. Better to be broke because of helping people than being broke for spending an absurd amount for something silly!

Exactly. I think it's really crazy to spend that much money for something like that.

Of late, there are many people who spend exorbitant amounts of monies on weird stuff. Many before me have said they would do this or that with the money... If you are interested to know about my plans... well, let me have that money first... you never know how money can play on one's mind

If someone's willing to spend that much on an old yellowing piece of paper, I can't imagine how much money he has in his bank account.

@cahaya1983 Well, no one questions when those not so meaningful paintings get sold for millions of dollars. I think it all depends on how passionate the buyer is for the given item. The more the passion the higher the stakes. Of course, the money is involved too

@thesids That makes sense. He's probably even willing to empty the account just to own that piece of paper.

Yeah read that in the news a few weeks back. $88,000 for a tattered yellowing piece of paper.. Hmm .. I sounds silly to me at least.

@cahaya1983 I wonder what he would do with it.. frame it as a trophy? Aren't there many in the world who would love to have one simple meal a day .. not the kind on the menu.. hos money could have fed millions.

@sofssu That's exactly my thought. When you read news like this it's pretty obvious why people in many parts of the world are dying because of starvation, isn't it.

It does, I saw what the menu looks like too. They expected the value to be $50,000 I think, but apparently someone had too much money and bought it at $88,000 instead.

Did you hear about the balloon dog that was sold for $58 million 2 years ago? A balloon dog! What is wrong with people these days...

@LadyDuck Yeah I did too! I can ask the balloon guy at the local carnival to make one like that and paint it in chrome or whatever, it would probably look the same.

Oh yeah there are in fact a few other items from the ship that are on auction. Even a biscuit.

We all know of far higher prices than that being paid for items at auction, but it is still outrageous for a meno whatever the significance.

@cahaya1983 I should image it will also be quite delicate and easy to damage. Despite the fact that it is no doubt stored appropriately, it will have a limited life span because paper or cardboard tends to biodegrade.

@Asylum Yeah, good point, I didn't think about that. I don't know if framing it would make a difference to the life span, though.

I guess when the ship sinks, the food will feed the marine creatures. They may find it nice to have mutton chips, and possibly corned beef too. i wonder how the marine creatures find the taste of ox tongue! I wonder who buys the menu. It is completely useless unless they want to make a documentary about it.

I've no idea who the guy is, but someone who has too much money that's for sure. I'd suggest he opens a Titanic-themed restaurant and display that menu on the wall. Maybe serve the same to the customers too.

its purty odd what some schtuff brings. i reckon some'f jest the desire to collect some mighty strange thingies 'n the rarer, the more they're willin' to shell out. seems they've more money 'n smarts?? i can only imagine how many actual folks $88 grand'd feed... i can't recall off the top'f my head the most crazily prized thingy i've heard of, there's been so many! whilst i don't partake in much t.v., i'm quite addicted to the antiques roadshow, lol.

Oh I watch that show from time to time, too! I have to admit some of the stuff on that show are very cool though. Yeah I actually thought of the same thing - how many people can be fed with that much money. It would be all fine and dandy if the world isn't as problematic as it is now, I guess. But with so many problems - hunger and poverty and all - I find this sort of news a little appalling.

@cahaya1983 me's well, but then we dunno what whome'er purchased such does out in their own communities 'n beyond. lots'f folks donate funds, items 'n their time without wishin' to be in the limelight whilst doin' such. i try to give 'em the benefit 'f the doubt.

I'm curious about that too. Plus, he didn't only take the menu. He also took a slip of paper from the Turkish Bath in the Titanic. A ticket or something like that.

Some folks will pay outrageous prices to own one-of-a-kind items or simply to touch history. I'm not sure what Carlo Ponti's birthday present to Sophia Loren might have cost, but it would have been more than I'm worth. It was a solid gold toilet seat, by the way.

Seriously? A gold toilet seat? Doesn't sound very romantic to me. Or maybe he was more into practical gifts than romantic ones. But a toilet seat made of gold doesn't sound practical either.
