If you saw someone being attacked, what would you do?

I would call 911 and inform them what is going on, and where it is at. I would be afraid to intervene as I wouldn't want to get attacked either. I have never been in that type of situation, and I hope that I never am either. Something like that would be hard to see, without getting involved in some way. I would be afraid to stop it, as i wouldn't know if the person doing the attacking has a gun, so I just wouldn't want to risk my life, although, risking my life to save someone else is the proper thing to do. Things like that happen all the time, and it isn't right but that is the way society is. It is a shame too, when someone can't walk down the street without worrying about being attacked. I think for most of us, it is easier to just walk away, and do nothing, but yet, if we were being attacked, we would want someone to help us in some way.

At least you didn't get hurt and that is a good thing, and you scared him off too. Good for you. I bet he will never mess with you again.

In such a situation, I would also prefer informing the nearest police control room by dialing 100 (for India)... I agree with you when you say that the best thing to do after informing the police for help is to help the victim but its not so safe too, there is now way to know what the attacker is actually carrying with him... I know its sad that at such time we do value our lives more, but guess most of us will do this only

I might intervene, but it depends on the situation. I am a woman and I don't have the physical strength to handle a group of men, so it would depend who the attackers are. If it is too dangerous to intervene I would call 911 without getting personally involved in the attack. When my ex-boyfriend was attacked no one intervened. They were probably worried about their own safety. My ex and I ended that evening in the emergency room, but fortunately he didn't get any permanent injuries.

@rosekiss My ex was injured next to his eye. He is already blind on the other eye, and the attack could have had very serious consequences, but fortunately things turned out okay. Yes, if it is too dangerous for us to intervene it is best to stay away and call 911.

@Porcospino I am glad that everything turned out okay for him this time. It could have been really bad, and for him, I think his gurardian angel was watching out for him. I, like you, would not want to get involved, but I would call 911, and let the authorites take care of it.

That is a good thing that he didn't have serious injuries. I am like you, that since I am a woman too, I wouldn't want to intervene trying to stop it, as I wouldn't want to get hurt myself. I would also call 911, and let then take care of the situation.

Depends upon how much of presence of mind I have at that point of time. Usually people become too numb. Do we have time to call 911? Would we be able to hold the cell steady or will our hands be shaking? Do we have cell phone with enough charge? Are we in range? Many factors are involved. If there is only one person, and chances are that the person is not going to leave me as a witness, I might as well look for something to attack him or her with, after 911 of course.

I never thought about all the things that you mentioned. It would be easy to drop the cell phone, trying to call the authorities, as we would really be scared that they might come after us. I have never seen anyone beign ataacked, and I hope I never do either. It would be something that would be so scatry, I would proably just freeze up and not be able to move.

I have a black belt in karate but I also have a dislocated hip. So I think I would call 911 to.

If I had a black belt in karate, and could use the move, I would certainly use it. As it stands, I don't have that, no nothing about it, so 911 is the best bet for me, and I would stay there and give information if necessary.

I have never encountered anything like that here, and not sure what I would do if we ever did. I am not one to interfere with those that might be fighting, as I wouldn't want to get hit. I think, I wouls just call 911, and let the police handle it.

I did intercede when I saw this big h ulk of a man hitting his littlre fiive ft two wife,I gra bbed his arm and that spurred the two men who had been looking on to do something to stop that fool they grabbed him and held on to him and I p honed for 911 explaining what was going on and where its was. they were there in five minutes. they arrested the wife beater hel ed the woman and even examined me for possible injuries as he threw me to the ground. I was okay just some bruises.

I am glad you were okay, as it could have been much worse. You were brave to try to intervene though. I know I couldn't have done it. I would run if I could, go to my car, lock myself in, and call 911. I would just let the authorities take care of the situation, as they know what they are doing.

We have no 911 here but given that kind of situation I will of course do something to help the victim without exposing myself to danger. Like calling a police or any any immediate help from people who could join force to help.

When youdon't have 911, then, yes, you would have to do anything else to help in this situation. I amnot sure I would try to overtake the attacker though, as if he has a knife, he would use it, but then I wouldn't want him hurting anyone else either. It is a very hard decision to make, that is for sure.

When I was younger I often intervened but at this age, my courage is not what it was. Like you, I would call 911 and hopefully help gets there fast. We certainly live in a dangerous, crazy world.

We certainly do. I am not young anymore either, so I can't move as fast as I used to, so calling 911, is the best thing for me to do, and just wait until the police get there, and give them inforamation they might need.

I would most certainly call 911 and depending on the situation I might or might not try to intervene. I am not as fast or as flexible as I use to be, it sucks getting old!

I can sure testify to getting old, as some days I feel older than others. Anyway, once I would call 911, if I had mace, I would use it, and stop the attack and give the police time to get there. Mace is always a good way to stop things like that, and in this day and age, you almost need to keep it with you at all times.

I would also call 911. Like you, I would be too afraid to try and stop it unless it was one of my kids or grandkids. Then I would come out fighting as the mama bear would take over.

I can certainly agree with you there. Calling 911, would be the first thing anyone should do, and not try to overtake him, unless you have mace and you can douse him with that, as that would stop him long enough for the police to get there, and haul him off to jail.

I would call 911 as well, but then I'd be praying like a house afire, and if I felt led, then I'd try to do more to help. There could be some way to get the attacker to forget what they are about especially if you see others coming to aid you. sometimes it's good to get involved and fight, while it might also be right to flee. The main thing is the not freak out so you can use all your faculties to weigh the situation and make the fight decision.

It sometimes can be hard to make the right decision especially if it isn't planned, and just happens. I would want to flee, but I would also want to help, so it would be a very hard decision to make for sure.
