Hide That

One of the features I use on Facebook more than any other is "Hide". Using the "Hide" option allows me to avoid blocking and deleting people. The funny thing about Facebook friends is that they can change over time. They might have been funny and charming in the beginning, but then they start posting vindictive or self-pitying status updates, sharing ridiculous memes and basically blowing up your newsfeed with their petty lives.
Along comes "Hide this" . I can tell Facebook to hide this post or all posts like it or any shares from a particular page. I can "Unfollow" - which hides updates from that friend without unfriending. We can be shadow friends. They can see me, I can't see them, and no hurt feelings.
I don't like blocking people. I don't want to delete them from my world. It's so drastic.
Sometimes all I want to do is hide them someplace where they can't annoy me for a while. At least until after I have had my coffee.
Then maybe I will call "ollie ollie oxen free".

I have a few people that I "hide" also and don't want to cause problems with a delete.

some Facebook commentators can suddenly turn into jerks - you can unblock blocked friends there too but for me once they've gone they've gone for good.

I hide a lot of things on Facebook too. I don't like to hurt feelings either.

i have family that shares every bit of dribble and lies from some conservative sites that never fact check, it used to make me mad and I would send them the proof those things were faked, now I just block and have less mad in my day!

I got a notice in my news feed the other day that this guy that I didn't know had started following me. So I started checking him out to see why he would want to. We had two or three friends in common but they were local people who I consider have questionable taste. I decided to check out his profile and had no trouble getting into it. There wasn't a whole lot of activity there but he did have a couple of memes that I liked so I was going to save them but for some reason I couldn't. Now I have been on peoples profile that were not on my friends list before and was able to save pics so I was confused. Anyway I was telling my daughter about him today, of course I couldn't remember his name so I checked my list of followers to see who he was and he wasn't there. I went back to my news feed and couldn't find the notice so I checked the mutual friends it said we had and couldn't find him there either. Now I'm really confused. The only thing I can think of is that he was notified that I was looking at his profile and he locked everything down and unfriended all the mutual friends we had. Come to think about it that is kind of scary.

i've done such myself, though i aint that many 'friends' on fb these days. i acquired quite a few when i 'came addicted to farmin' 'n had a need fer neighbors, lol.
anyhow, some i grew fond 'f 's we shared our lives. 'n then once i stopped farmin' (some years back...when my senses started to return - wonder if'n those cows've exploded from not bein' milked??) 'twas a mutual decision fer us to 'unfriend' with no hard feelin's. but, those that remain 'n e'en my sweet daughter tend to post schtuff that's 'f no interest to me.
i've grown to dislike those cute lil minions immensely. i've no wish to've to go to my son's home page to see if'n he's posted new pics 'f my sweetest new addition. so i've been on a 'hiding' frenzy. don't wanna see politics, don't wanna see any more minions, 'n then there's some folks who think they've gotta share e'ery single songs youtube video they've listened to fer that day.

I picked up a lot of "friends" who were strangers from games I have played, Farmville was one of them. I like some of those strangers better than people I know. I enjoy reading their posts in Danish, Swedish, French, German and Italian. I interact with some of them more than others. Have lost a few here and there, but most of them are still there.

Ollie ollie oxen free! or sometimes Olly olly oxen free, or even Ally ally in-come-free, or some other permutation: The words you yell when you are telling other players in a game of hide-and-seek that the game is over and it's safe to "come in free" from their hiding places.

I like that feature too. I wish, however, I could figure out why I can no longer see the posts my grown nieces put online. I am sure they did not block me, but Facebook has no clue as to why they are invisible to me. I checked my setting, which show they are friends and I am following them. Sigh. Technology is great, when it works.

@Rollo1 Thanks for the info. Stinks, since this is how I keep up with their growing kids. Or not.

To hide those whom we do not like to see on news feed is a good option. FB asks our preferences e.g. what we like to see in the news feed and what we do not want. If we have commented on a friend's post, and someone has commented subsequently, we get a notification about that. I immediately press the button to hide further notifications. I feel if if I an not connected to everyone, there is no need to read comments of unknown person, who has commented after me.

I haven't used that feature yet - but perhaps I should! I used to love seeing everyone's business on the newsfeed - but eh, I'm not into that anymore. So instead of using the hiding feature, I have just promptly gone off Facebook (well mostly) - I'm the one in hiding!

Is there a blocking facility on FB. I only know of removing them from the friends' list and I have done that to many.

I use the hide feature usually when it's a friend of a friend whom I don't know. I unfollow when I don't want to block or unfriend someone but don't want to hurt their feelings.
