A Siren followed me home

Last night was book club night. We all bring a plate of food to share and have with a glass of wine, water or soda. Then we discuss the latest book. It was a very entertaining evening because some of the members had been in France and took part in the running race held there. On the way home I stopped at the red traffic light and suddenly I heard a loud siren behind me. I wasn't sure where it was or where it was going. And I was pretty sure it wasn't after, I had been driving a little bit slower than I might have been and had only one glass of wine and two glasses of water. Isn't funny how we can make ourselves feel guilty even when we do nothing wrong. There was no where for me to move so I just sat there in my lane, when the light changed I could see it was an ambulance and not a police car. It wasn't until I was almost home that the ambulance turned and went onto another street. When I arrived home I could still hear the siren so it was obviously quite near my house. Anyhow I had arrived home safely and that was a relief.

Do ambulance and police have the same siren where you live? Here they are different we cannot mistake them and we are quick to move on the side if it is an ambulance.

@LadyDuck Their sirens were always very different Anna. It is just over the last few years it is harder to tell them apart.

@glenniah They should keep them very different, so people know how to "react".

People automatically feel guilty when they see a police car and so start driving much worse than they were before they saw it. Don't you have to pull over if there is an ambulance behind you with a siren?

@glenniah Oh my, I was imagining you driving along so slowly and carefully thinking there was a police car behind you while unwittingly slowing down the ambulance that might not make it in time to save whomever they were sent to save..

@Rollo1 Yes we do, but we were at the traffic lights and it all happened very fast. The ambulance turned and went into the other lane. It was just a short while he was behind with the siren on.

I see a lot of drivers who are already driving safely suddenly get extra cautious if a police car is behind them even when the cops are not interested in them. It is quite a natural instinct. Thieves often give themselves away by seeing a cop car and immediately flooring the accelerator peddle

@arthurchappell. That's a good point. I see drivers who are within the speed limit slow right down when they see a police car.

I'm the same - I always feel guilty if I see a police car whether it's got a siren going or not. I mentally check my actions to see if I've transgressed!

It must have been unnerving to have that ambulance follow you home. I always feel uneasy when a police car pulls up behind me or I see flashing lights coming up even when I know I didn't do anything wrong

@Marilynda It must be that we are unnerved by the flashing lights and such so at the moment don't think 'hey I'm innocent' we just want not to be proved guilty of anything, hehe

It did make you feel guilty and worry a little though it wasn't about you.

Oh yes if I see a police car I tend to jump on the brakes, even when I'm driving correctly it's just automatic to feel guilty (and probably quite dangerous!) The funny thing is that when I read your title, the first thing I thought of was the mythical creatures of ancient Greek legend!

@Fleura Hi. Funnily enough it wasn't until I came back on to this site that I also thought about those Sirens in the Greek legend. Nah they didn't bother me just the bright lights and noise from the ambulance, hehe
