Have you ever been a Mystery Shopper?

My first venture into being an Independent Contractor was as a Mystery Shopper. I fell into it quite by accident. Once I got started I loved it. We didn't have a lot of extra money back then, before my husband was eligible for Social Security. We didn't have money to go out to dinner more than once a month. So I figured I would make some money doing Mystery Shopping - little did I know then that I would get free dinners! Most dinner and some lunch shops require two people, so my husband and I ate well. One example is a steak house in Chattanooga, Tennessee where we mystery shopped at lunch at least 8 times. Those lunches required us to buy drinks (soda OK), share either an appetizer or dessert and order two different entrees. No problem. And the spending limit was $80. If we spend more and the bill was over $80 we paid the difference. There were a few times with the bill, tip and tax that we spend two or three dollars over the $80. I can't even begin to tell you about all the types of mystery shops we did, but as an example: . Bank shops . Gas stations shops . Cell phone shops . Car dealerships shops . Etc. When we moved two years ago we took ourselves out of the area for decent mystery shopping. Unfortunately, we had to give it up. It was work, it was busy, it was at times difficult but it was always rewarding. The one thing to remember if you get into 'shopping' is you never pay to shop - they pay you.

That's a nice and rewarding earning opportunity, although I've never tried it. I think it's suitable for people who have a lot of free time and not tied up to too many daily chores and commitments.

To do well you have to devote full time...If you live in a place like New York city you can be busy from morning to night and make out quite well.

I have searched, but unfortunately we have nothing similar close to the area where we live. We should cross the border and go down to Milan, but it's too expensive in gasoline and toll road.

@AbbyGreenhill This is my problem, we are in a pretty rural area, the high end shops are up north in Lugano or Bellinzona. Too expensive to go there.

That's why we don't do it any longer...too much wasted time/gas and long drives. Plus they don't let you take a high end shop unless you live within certain miles of the location.

I never did but i had a sister who started out doing it for her first job. I always wanted to do it but i know you have to do a lot of work. It just looked like fun to spy on people. I did have an experience when i went to a fast food place and the girl was very snotty so i said."I just want you to know you should be nicer to your customers cause you never know who might be spying on you from the company to see if they should fire you or not.".... I went back a few times more and she was always so sweet to me..hahah..I hope i at least helped her

@AbbyGreenhill I'm glad you weren't the only one so it didn't look like you were just after that person..If people really hate their job, they should quit instead of goofing off on the Boss's money..

It sounds like you got your point across! Due to a few reports I know that a few employees were let go. They didn't do their jobs. They wont fire someone just based on one person's report, so I'm sure I wasn't the only one that wrote them up a bad report.

A fellow Canadian and bubbler, paegia, is a mystery shopper. She seems to make decent money doing mystery shopping. I want to do it, too . . but I don't know how and where to start.

Yes, they do. For the 80 dollar lunch the report usually took me 2 hours. It had to be very detailed.
