Owls made of stone

The store where I work part-time is all things about birds, from seed of various kinds to suet cakes to gift items and books. Last week, I was putting some tags on these small stone owls, two inches high. I thought they were really cute and arranged them in various ways, then decided to take a photo of the three I like best. They also come in four inch and eight inch sizes, heavy enough to be bookends, but I like the small ones best.

A stuffed owl at the top of the staircase in my aunt's house that stared me down when I was young, put me off owls for life. But if they were made of stone, I would assume they could not fly so that would be okay.

It was an enormous pottery owl which used to stand at the top of a staircase in the Fitzwilliam Museum here in Cambridge which, I think, turned me on to owls! I remember wanting to visit it every time we went to the museum when I was about five or six. I can understand, however, how a stuffed owl in the gloom at the top of the stairs could be very ominous and scary to a small child!

@owlwings But why do they always put owls at the top of stare-cases, I mean staircases? Dr Who should do an episode on not letting owls stare at you, I think. Perhaps they are aliens from another galaxy.

No kidding! An owl on a stairway like that could scar you for life.

They are cute, but are they just artwork? Some people who live by the coast put up owls to keep the seagulls away.

These are just art. Owl or other predator likenesses, even silhouettes, will keep smaller birds of many kinds away. The larger stone owls like these little ones weigh several pounds.

@JamesHxstatic Several pounds, yikes. They actually look a bit like they are made from wood. I would like that. Stone is more permanent, but I enjoy wood carvings.

I have always thought that these 'polished rock' owls were rather cute and inventive. Some definitely work better than others and I think one needs to choose carefully to find the most attractive and 'owlish' of them. I like your group of three: the two on the left appear to be whispering to each other about the poor little one on the right!

but if you put the little one in the middle, they will look like a family

yes the small stone owls are cute, look easy to clean and can be moved to different places around the house. they don't make you feel weird as @rollo1 described.
