How "One Child China" Has Backfired!

They now have a huge demographic crisis as a result of the one-child policy, has resulted in a government headache of too many men, too many old people, and too few young people. OK they have now rescinded the policy, but playing catch-up, on generations lost, is likely to take decades. If people don’t start having more children,in a hurry, they’re going to have a vastly diminished workforce to support a huge aging population. China had this big population boom in the ’60s and ’70s. These people grew up to form the cheap labor force for the manufacturing boom of the ’80s and ’90s. They now form China's vast army of retirees, which is devastating to the economy.

Until China starts to respect and value girl children, lifting the policy won't make any difference. They'll still kill the girls and just end up with even more boys. It won't solve the gender imbalance.

there's some folks who 'cheated' the system 'n came to the u.s. to've those additional young'uns. bonus? they've dual citizenship now (the babes born here) 'n when they become college age, their folks can come in with great ease. this sorta imbalance occurs when folks think they're so bright 'n their solutions well thought out...

Of course One Child Policy is stupid. OK, now this rule has a change. It should be cheerful, but as a matter of fact, the people who born in 70s may not be very excited. As our first child is around 10 years old, a new baby can really be the play mate. But this is not the big problem. The big problem is the delivery risk. As we are not that young, the pregnancy and delivery will have a higher risk. Even if I like to have one more child, but considering the risks, I have to give it up. I can't take a risk to it because the cost is so high. Besides, today bringing up a child really costs money, too. Here many things' price is higher and higher, but your salary will never catch it up. If nothing changes, I don't think it will have a difference for our population. By the way, long time ago may be people wanted boys rather than girls. But it changed already. I am the only one child for my family and I am a girl. Today maybe some families even prefer to have girls, because they will have less pressure to it. As usually the house, wedding charges are paid by men.

@youless As you say...playing catch up is not an option now for some, and bringing up children in today's world an enormous expense, probably more so now with China's 'new found wealth' which hasn't filtered through to all. Would be nice if the government apologised for getting it wrong in the first place, probably then causing unnecessary heartache to many and making girls feel like second class citizens...

I have only a brief knowledge of the situation. I remember hearing about the 1 child policy when I was younger, but never thought about the potential future impact it could have.

The big problem has been that Chinese did not want baby girls, so they killed the girls to have the possibility to have a baby boy. Stupid laws always bring problems.

It is a surprise that the one child policy was adhered to. Many people may have travelled elsewhere to avoid the restriction, which once again would reduce the younger population resident there.

Perhaps they shouldn't have killed all their girls, I've read more than one article of years gone by that the chinese couples would elect to abort baby girls in hopes to have a boy. So whose fault is this again? As for having more babies, well maybe it's time mankind stopped over populating the earth, there's precious little left of wild habitat and animals and if we keep growing in numbers soon Earth will become the new Mars.

When I see the Chinese army marching I think of all those young men who are never going to find brides...that worries me. It could furnish an invasion to find some.

Hey boy,If CHI didn't carry out its family planning policy to control population grow in 1978.How about the United Kingdom government give China more immigrants, such as 200 million?I't not a joke. Deng Xiaoping asked the same question to American President, and he change the subject sonn
