So How Exactly Does This Manifesting Thing Work?

Over the past few years I have read a number of books on the power of manifesting the life of your dreams, I have even tried all the exercises the books contained but the money has not come flooding yet and I was wondering just how this manifesting thing really works, or if it works at all.
I am all for positive thinking and I do believe in miracle money, I get a few random small amounts from time to time, which I deposit in my savings account, but I have never achieved the big stuff , the life changing sums of money
So do you guys think that the old manifestation thing works, can we really create the life of our dreams through positive thinking and have any of you ever achieved it?

I think that the way that 'manifesting' really works is by self-conditioning the brain to recognise certain things as 'significant' and therefore to make one more alert to and ready to act on 'significant' opportunities.
Our brains are very complex and sophisticated filtering devices which routinely deal with probably hundreds of stimuli, 'recognition events' and choices every second. Most are filtered out and rejected as irrelevant or meaningless to our current situation or activity. We can (and often do) 'train' the brain to recognise certain signals as 'significant'. For example, if we are looking for a book in a shelf of hundreds and know some significant character of it - such as that it's red or of a certain size - our brain will automatically reject and pass over those which don't match and we don't have to read the titles or remember all the other books on the shelf until we find the one we are looking for.
'Manifestation' works in much the same way. Every day we spend some time concentrating on something we desire and actually train the brain to become alert to certain signals which, if acted upon, help us to achieve that goal. It is the way that most good 'intuitive' people's minds work and become successful at what they do. To others it often seems like magic and most of the people who are really excellent at their jobs cannot explain why they are or how they do it - they just 'know'!

wow thanks for such a detailed and interesting reply @owlwings I had never really thought about it as brain training and I guess with this new knowledge it will be interesting to back through some of my old books and see if I can indeed pick new tricks up.
Like you say the brain is extremely clever and we just do not use it to it's capacity, I know there are lots of things I do on auto pilot that others really struggle with and vice versa.
