If your post has no responses, don't just post another. Ask yourself why?

Yesterday's post from the Bugman encouraged us all to go and look at the 'New User' and 'No Responses' list and so I did and what I found was not a big surprise. There are members here who post, get no responses, and then they post again and again and again. In fact many are posting so often that they probably don't even realise that they have no responses or comments. Perhaps it's pointless to write this since people with that mindset don't seem to read - they just post and post. But on the off-chance that one has popped by, here are some tips. 1. Slow down - less really is more on a site like this. When we see post after post by the same member we walk on by and don't read them. 2. Look again at your title and ask yourself if it's interesting. Would YOU open a post like that? If the answer is no, try again. 3. Your first two lines are visible to everybody when they look at the list of reviews. If they are full of mistakes or clearly lacking any thought or attempt to open a proper discussion, people won't open them. After the title, the first two lines are the next most important that you write. 4. When you've finished the post, read it through and ask yourself if it passes the "SO WHAT?" test. If a reader can get to the end and think "Yeah, so what?" then they probably won't like or comment. And most importantly if you are still wondering why nobody comments on your posts, ask yourself if you deserve to get comments. Are you actively reading around the site and interacting with other people. If you don't, they won't come to read you. Good luck and let's get that 'No Responses' list down to just a few posts by writing more consciously and not being lazy writers. Think of your readers first.

These are tips everyone writing here should read and think about. Your recommendations on title and first few lines are advice you'd get in any journalism course, never mind a social media site. You have to catch the interest of the reader.

We'd say it's common sense but not common practice. Yesterday I posted something that had just one comment after about an hour. I went back and changed the title and it suddenly got a lot more action. We can all improve.

@boiboing How interesting. Useful that you can edit if it isn't working

I went there and found a bunch of slackers and some really good writers. One post had no post, just a title...? Another newbie posted dozens within a short time. I opened and commented on one but I would never look at all of those put up so quickly. and for responses to my comments left there this morning - they liked it, no comments.

Not all of them are worth the effort - I certainly think that's the case. But a few are and they make it worth looking.

I try to make my title very intriguing. Most of the time that is. I think we forget we can edit our work although we need to edit it before we post the first time. Good info. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I wrote a post and realised about an hour later when it had only one comment that I'd used a very 'English' term in the title and that most of the world probably didn't understand it. So I edited it and then the comments started to flow.

The best thing to do is to wait until you get lots of responses before you go and post another discussion.

That's true - but sometimes a post just can't get the comments to start.

Good advice, not just for the newcomers and no responsers. Let's face it, we're all in the no response section initially, until that first reader comes by. You've given us all plenty to think about here.

I hope that the people with most need to read your wise words do it. Some of them don´t bother to read anything. The word interaction has no meaning for them.

You are so right, as I have seen that very thing. I hesitate to respond to those that post one discussion after another, as they aren't here for the right reasons. I know that if I respond back to them, they won't comment back to me, and that just isn't how it works in here, and I hope too, that they will see your discussion and realize that they need to do their part which in turn helps everyone else including them.

@boiboing They don't understand the concept more than likely, and if they do, they really don't care. It is a shame too. It is a concept that isn't hard to understand, if they would just interact with others.

Thank you. I think we all start out trying to spread the love around the site and then learn that it's hard when none of it comes back again from some people.

I was never really the type to come up with catchy titles, but most of the stuff I write has substance. I guess sometimes I need more than that, because in the end most of it gets passed over anywas.

I have tried to go there too. I might find one out of 30 that I will respond to on this page. I agree with you that way too many of the discussion are not interesting and I never have anything to say on them. I guess I could leave a short comment but I don't see how this will help out at all because I might be the only one doing this.

Don't got too far. Some people come up with really great titles and then when you read it's about something completely different. If I feel 'cheated' I won't like or comment.

I see to it that I post just one in a couple of days. I spend most of my time going from page to page and going over my notifications to respond or leave comments. I also make it a point to respond or leave comment related to the topic in a hilarious, but never offensive, manner. In this way, it is fun for everyone. I may be wrong though! But that is what I believe the best thing to do.

I think it's helpful for people to point that out to we newbies because it's something I noticed a while ago, that for some of us we're coming from a background where we were thinking with a slightly different mindset, and it takes some awareness and getting used to.
