Just because she has kids?

I am rather annoyed at work now, it's ridiculous. I told the manager I really need hours, the fact the teenagers don't want to work I will take those hours. This lady has been off work 3 months due to surgery. She over spends money left and right, so she can cut back. She just came back, and they are handing her shifts left and right. I think because she has 3 kids (beside the point they are all around my age and can support themselves). I am disgusted they kept telling me we are giving you as many hours as we can. So I settled at 25 hours, well they took my hours down to 14 hours and gave the rest to this lady because she needs the money. Well she knew she was taking a few months off for surgery, and I don't think that is fair. I am shocked at the number of workplaces who favour those with kids. It's almost like go throw out a few kids to get special treatment and get what you want.

Perhaps it's not because she has kids, but because she is a better worker in their opinion, or because she's been there longer. If you're so unhappy, you should look for another job.

@ricki_911 Well it does sound like they're playing favorites and that's not fair. I'd say something. You can turn them into upper management, everybody has a boss.

I have been there 2 year, she has been 8 months. They told everyone that is why, she has 3 kids and being a single mother who is also on government assistance as well. I am looking for another job, but I also saw this at many other workplaces. Your availability is another factor, if you have kids they follow it to a t if not they don't care one bit about you.

@ricki_911 Also, she can't properly do the job either. She can't lift or bend so when her suppose shift duties would be doing 7 skids of work she stands around. I go in to have to do it all myself.

I do understand your frustration. One of my girls was working in a museum and saving money to go to grad school. She would take every hour they would give her and she would pick up extra shifts any time someone was sick or cancelled. They kept dropping her total hours and, when she asked why, the supervisor did tell her, "Well, some people have mortgages to pay and they need the hours." Because she was 24 at the time, it was assumed she just didn't need the money as much as the next worker... but who doesn't need money? If we didn't, we likely wouldn't be working

My point exactly. When they said that I stood going seriously. Her kids are 25, 25, and 18 they are fully capable to a point (compared to say a 2 year old). She can't fully do the shift duties so they get pushed onto me so why not pay me the entire wage to do it. This isn't the first time I have had to deal with this in a workplace I am not older at 27 (compared to when I was 17), but anyone with kids even if they are 18 trumps you and gets more hours because they pity them.

It doesn't seem right. Also, experience should count for a lot.

I have been there for just under 2 years, she has been 8 months. She is a good worker, but can't lift, or do anything the job really entails.

That is sad. If they don't have enough hours for you and they are sharing some with her maybe you should go find another job so you will have enough hours. Two jobs that gives you enough is better one that irritates you.

I have 2 kids and would never want them to just give me hours or take them from someone else for me. I do know how hard it is to raise kids and how bad I need or could use the money but still it is not right to take from other more experienced workers just to give her more. Also, if she knows this is happening then that is selfish on her part. Okay a few extra hours I might understand but why cant they split them up between you and her? It makes no sense to me and is wrong on many levels in my opinion.

I agree that sometimes it does seem very unfair.

She can't do the job properly anyways, she can't lift or bend which is the entire job. So her 5-8 hour shifts she doesn't do the job so when I go in on my shifts I have to do her work too.
