Just a boy from Clare! A Remembrance Day Poem

This is a poem my 13yr old grandson wrote for a school project which @jaboUK asked me to put into a post.
Clare is the small Suffolk town, where he attends school, which was voted best war poem by the school, and adopted by the local church for future Remembrance services.
Just a boy from Clare
Walking on a cold October day,
Laughing and joking about the sun of May,
How blind we were to see my friend,
That our lives and hearts would never mend .
You were just a boy from Clare,
The ring of gunfire above your brow,
The joke is wearing thin, my friend,
With every letter home you send.
Just a boy from Clare,
It is time to go over now,
Brothers in arms to honour your vow,
Up into no-man’s land.
Just a boy from Clare,
Your body in the mud,
Your mind is freed from the horror my friend,
As your bones begin to buckle and bend.
Just a boy from Clare?
The consequence of war,
For ‘King and Country’ you entered the fight
So who could ask for more?
It could have been me,on our last day out there
But the bullet chose you,so 'No more the boy from Clare.'

You have made me cry, or rather your grandson's poem has. You could almost imagine he had been there. A very sensitive and bright child. You must all be delighted for this honour but even more for his sweet caring nature.
Thank you, @Jabo for suggesting this.

It is remarkable that a boy so young could catch the horror and sadness of war as your grandson has done. This is a great encouragement for him that hopefully will keep him writing poems throughout his life.

He did a great job with this. We have a small town near us with the same name, which I find interesting. Cool about the school vote and the church decision.

@MarshaMusselman It does seem that many UK local names also pop up in the US, does make you wonder whether the original settlers were from these same places

@bookbar Hmm, hadn't thought of that. Not sure that I'd take the time to check into it either. It could also be that the original settlers had that as a last name.

That gave me goosebumps. That 13 year old did a great job with that poem. Your grandson is creative and sensitive.
