Don't Look Now but Something's Watching Me

Here in Western Australia, summer is fast approaching. We've had a couple of days with temperatures in the mid-30s (Centigrade) and expect higher temperatures soon. The reptiles that scare our tourists so badly are starting to appear and warm up after a winter spent holed up somewhere warmish. Today while I was sitting at the computer I became aware of something or someone watching me. When I looked out the window, I saw a skink sitting on the window-sill peering in. We weren't able to get a good photo of him so I'm attaching one from a previous summer. They are very timid and scuttle off as soon as they see you. They are absolutely harmless and we like to see them around. I wonder what he was thinking. Anyone like to hazard a guess?

They seem to like the window sills. This one had a bit of spiderweb on his nose. They get the flies and spiders I guess.

just remembering the l ittle green l izard we had in the Library and the fat man reading his newspaper. now the lizare was tame and n ot h arful nor poisono us eihte. Suddenly he let out a scream and I saw the l ittle fellow crawling on his shirt, I told him that the l ittle fellow was more scared of him than he was of the l izard. I explained that the lizard was harmless, not poisonous and I took hinm and put him outside.

@Hatley Some people react big time, don't they? I'm glad you were able to rescue the lizard.

I am scared of reptiles like that special gecko . One or twice a gecko gets inside the house and i would be so scared to go inside the bedroom and bathroom where it was . Hubby has to do something , for it to go outside .

@SIMPLYD Every household needs at least one person who isn't afraid of creepy things, don't you think?

I know there are many people who would react just like you. In our house it is usually me who has to get rid of the spider or the gecko. My husband is a big sook sometimes.

Never heard of a skink before, it looks like a lizard with legs. It is unseasonably hot here, around 30C during the day and our lizards are still running round, basking in the heat.

@JudyEv The weather is a treat as it's so hot it's kept the house warm indoors, very rare for this time of year.

It's just a lizard that is called a skink for some reason. I was amazed how hot it was in France and Germany when we were there - temps in the high 30s and even 40C one day in France.

@thea09 For some reason I didn't think it would get so hot in Europe. And I didn't expect such a keen participation in all things water! There seemed to be lakes and swimming pools everywhere, certainly at nearly all the caravan parks we stayed at.

@JudyEv that is awesome. Skinks here are much smaller than that. When we were in Singapore a few years back we met an interesting lizrd on the path at the Botanic Gardens. I'd never seen one so big, but he wasn't as big as yours,.

That just gives me the creeps. I don't like lizards at all. They remind me too much of snakes.

@JudyEv I have a big fear of snakes and I guess lizards look so much like them to me. I do think some of them are very pretty but I don't want them anywhere near me.

We move quietly if we see one and try not to scare them. We'd like them to get tamer but I think it might take a long time.

He's thinking - "So this is my life. If the sun is out I am warm, if not, I am cold. And there's not much to do. I wonder what these giants do all day".

I remember you posted about those animals on the other site. They are just like big lizards, I do not fear those animals. I only hate animals without legs.

I think I would have screamed to see that looking at me, but I'm not a big fan of lizards, or snakes, of any kind. I don't mind them as much if I know I'm going to see them, like the ones at zoos or as pets, but get a little scared if I see them if I'm not expecting it.

They can give me a fright if I'm not expecting one but otherwise I'm okay. The worst is weeding under a bush and suddenly spotting one near your hand. The skinks would be long gone but the bobtail goannas pretend they're not there and hope you go away.

My guess is that he was looking for something tasty, saw movement, and was disappointed to see a human and not a large and tasty fly. Actually, what DO skinks eat?

They eat flies and other insects which is why they like the window sills so you're right in that respect.

It can be difficult to take their photo as they mostly take off so quickly you have no chance. Even this photo has been cropped a lot.

I guess he envies you sitting in the shade! Perhaps he wants some cool air from the air-conditioner too. Maybe a glass of ice-cold lemon juice!

We aren't using the air-conditioning yet. Sometimes we put milk out for them but I'm not sure that they drink it. There are some other lizards which do but I don't know if the skinks like milk.

salamanders sometimes come near our garden. we know that when our dogs bark distinctively. there is a notion that the meat of these reptiles taste like chicken meat;I have not tried tasting and eating though.
