We Revisit the Bog Oak in Pollagh

A few days after the Hay-Making Festival in Trim, we went off to visit Pollagh (also spelt Pullough or Pollach) in Co. Offaly in the midlands. We last visited Pollagh in 1998 when we moored there in a canal boat. Today canal-boat operators have virtually stopped hiring out vessels because of the safety conditions imposed by the EU. When we were there so many years ago, Damian played his bass in the hotel with a local band. Some years later he was hitch-hiking at night and a lady picked him up. She was the owner of the pub there and remembered him. She told him it wasn't a good idea to hitch-hike at night, gave him a meal and a bed then next day put him on the train to Dublin and paid his fare. More acts of random kindness. So it was nice to catch up with the publican again. She talked us into going to bingo and I won 100 Euros while Damian won separate amounts of 10 and 20 Euros so that was a huge bonus. We stayed in the van in the car park at St Mary's Church. The tabernacle, lectern and altar in the church are all made from a bog oak which had been disinterred from the bog and was over 4,000 years old. There was also a bog oak sculpture near the bridge. The other interesting feature in the church are two large stained glass windows which were installed in 1936. They were designed by Ireland's foremost stained-glass artist of the time, Harry Clarke. I liked the flower boxes on the walls of the churchyard and we got a nice photo of the bridge reflected in the canal.

I don't know why anyone wouldn't like Ireland. I guess the weather isn't always the best but it was nice when we were there.

@JudyEv I think Ireland is so beautiful and it is such a lovely place to visit. I spent almost a year there when I was a child because my dad was working there. I remember bits and pieces of it and what I can remember it was so nice. Yes I think it was a bit cold there now that you say this.

@poehere Everyone talks about the cold there but, never having been there when it's cold, we only have very positive memories. I know one day we thought it was very cold but to the locals it wasn't at all.

I like the sculpture made with bogs, I have seen many made with bog olive trees in the south of France.

@JudyEv There are 1,500 year old olive oil trees in France, mainly in Mayenne department (north-west).

@LadyDuck It is amazing to think trees can live that long. Some plants I buy don't last a week!

It is incredible that the trees could be so old. I don't remember seeing any in France. I know there are some incredibly old living olive trees near Jerusalem.

It is a pity about the canal boat operators. I think sometimes too obsessive with safety is not a good thing. They could have allowed the canal boat operators to operate for short distance. Travel on canal up the river is really a romantic way of seeing the place.

Because Ireland is now in the EU, many things have changed and not always for the best. The canals are falling into rack and ruin now because no-one uses them much.

@JudyEv Andew Zimmern on Bizarre Foods, tv show, covered this recently or I would have never known it was a thing. He got to taste some that was hundreds of years old, had been made, buried and forgotten. When found was STILL GOOD.

@Jessicalynnt That is pretty amazing that food of any sort could be preserved for so long.

The same guy did some wonderful windows in a chapel in a nunnery in Dingle. These masterpieces were hidden from public view for many years. It's good that we can now see and appreciate his work more.

I've decided I like playing bingo now . We did a cruise once and I won a large amount on bingo. I only play it if I'm out somewhere.

Ireland is a great place for tourists, with so many interesting places, myths and legends, you could probably spend a year there, and still miss many..

You are quite right. Everywhere we went there was something new to see. All the attractions were well signed and it was easy to take over an hour to wander through a country house and its garden or whatever. You really felt you were getting a good deal.

I don't what the locals thought with us taking off three prizes. But there were plenty of prizes through the night and they were all very welcoming.
