Would you like to be an au pair?

If you don't know what an au pair is it is a live in nanny who takes care of children while the parents are at work. An au pair receives room, food and some money for their compensation. If they take a job in another country they also have the pleasure of exploring another country and their customs on their days off or while taking the child/children to the park. An au pair also had a chance to meet new people.

I've actually had several good friends here in Florida leave to go to England to serve as an au pair, and they loved the experience! One of them even told me she wants to make a career out of it! I guess she got lucky and got a wonderful family in England that she just loves being with!

That is a good thing to hear that your friend is an au pair in England and loves it.

I think it would be pretty cool to go and work in another country. I loved being overseas and seeing the different cultures. Koreans have a very free style with their kids. It is so safe out there. I would see teenagers out at ridiculous times of the night and couldn't help thinking that in the states parents worry too much for that.

@Kazemononoke Was it really safe for the teens to be out at those times of the night?

I haven't been an au pair but have talked with many young women who have. The experience can range from very satisfying to horrible. One should study the organisation which sends au pairs abroad very carefully and get into contact with former au pairs to learn about it.

Yes, very good advice to give to young girls.

@Kazemononoke Maybe you should take some cooking classes as that would help and then focus on nutrition.

I think it really has a lot to do with how the parents are and what they focus on when raising the children. I'm horrible with cooking but I would definitely focus on nutrition.

I am sure if you had a nice family with nice children you would be able to do the job and do a good job of it.

@Marcyaz I am good at that kind of thing, but yes the family makes it good or horrible.

@Missmwngi I don't believe that anyone who doesn't love kids would apply for an au pair job do you?

I think that would be a cool job. Right now I watch one child in my home during the summer and when he's in vacation from school and I love doing that

I would never have liked that job Marcy. It would be wonderful for those who can take care of kids though. And of course the travel would be great too.

I once had a neighbor who had an au pair for her children, she was from England and a very nice person. She had also been an au pair for another couple in another country but then the children no longer neede an au pair and so she had to find someone else to work for.

My cousin traveled as an au pair one summer when she was in college. She had a wonderful family she worked for and had a great traveling experience as well.

I would imagine if you like children and are able to put up with them it would be an interesting job.

No I would not. I would feel like a prisoner or slave. I don't mind watching someone else's kids, but not living with them.

I think that I would enjoy it if I didn't have 3 children of my own. I wish I could stay home with them myself so that I could have more one on one in teaching them.

I know a lot of young women have loved being an au pair, and I have known several who enjoyed it. However, I don't think there was ever a time when I would have liked it ... although I did enjoy raising my own children.

I've thought about doing that but I don't particularly like watching the younger children. I think it's a really nice job but a lot of times it means you can't be starting your own family because you're basically taking care of another family.

an au pair usually has to do light cleaning duties too otherwise they would be a nanny. I would not like to clean up after anyone else so I would not do that. I have worked as a nanny though.
