Sweet Smell Of Cyclamens

The days are becoming colder and the fog, in the morning, covers the sun. I only have a few days to rack the leaves and clean the garden before that the cold days prevent any outdoor activity. While I was outside raking the leaves, a sweet fragrance has hit my nostrils, my wild cyclamen are in bloom. These little tubers begin blooming at the beginning of winter and they last for many weeks. The cyclamens are perennial and they can survive in harsh weather conditions. I took a picture to show you the shape. I am sorry that I cannot share the fragrance.

Yes, they usually last until the end of February, they survive even under the snow.

They are very pretty. We have an old tin bath full of (unwild) cyclamens and they look very pretty.

The fragrance is incredible. I know it sounds silly, but I do not care what I left in the garden, except my cyclamens and my lily of the valley.

We had some deep pink cyclamens last year they have failed to come back this year for some reason. I love the leaves and the flowers.

@sofssu I suppose you have the big potted cyclamens, the shape of the flowers is the same, they are five time bigger, but they have no fragrance.

The small wild cyclamens are perennial flowers, I planted the first tuber when we bought the house 15 years ago and they have spread.

I also love honeysuckle, I have a huge pink honeysuckle vine. From late spring until early autumn it smells so good.

We sell those plants here in pots, I don't think they do well in the ground, but I've not tried. I've had them before, but I don't remember them having a strong fragrance. We're still having nicer than normal weather, although i heard that it may snow a bit on Saturday. It did that last Saturday too, but then it was in the sixties on Sunday. Last night, after eleven pm, it was still fifty-five degrees, but rain is coming our way for the rest of the day, if it shares any with us remains to be seen. I still have my bulbs to plant. I got ornamental grasses clipped last Sunday, but that's about it.

The ones you see in pots are different, they are five time bigger and have no fragrance at all. You cannot keep these wild cyclamens in pots, they die.

@LadyDuck You get colder weather there, so probably we could grow the same variety here, I just don't think they are available in this area, and I don't know whether they are anywhere in this country, but then again I never checked before.

I love cyclamen and I have some indoors and outdoors as well. I like the way they are growing - are they raised up so you can appreciate the scent better?

They are on the side of the wooden steps that leads down to the small brook, I have put those containers to plant some flowers. The area is humid due to the brook, the cyclamens love humidity.

Most of Switzerland get covered in snow, a little less here in the south where I live. We have snow every year, but only for short times. I cross my fingers.
