Here's 50 Euro for Luck

I just wrote a post about wedding favours and a member from Guangzhou, China mentioned that money is often given to the bride and groom in a red packet. Are we allowed to mention other members on this site? In case we're not, I'll just say that the person said that, in the south of China, the recipients might give a little of the money back whereas in the north it is more usual to accept all the money. I found this interesting because when we purchased our motor-home from Drogheda in Ireland, the man gave Vince back 50 Euro. The motor-home cost 10,000 Euro. He said it was a goodwill gesture to bring good luck. Damian, our son, had heard of and seen the custom before but it was new to us. We thought it was very generous of him and believed our good luck had started there and then. So now I'm interested to know if this is a custom where you live. When you purchase something, is a small portion given back to you? Or, if someone buys something, is a little given back? I presume it only happens with bigger items.

That's a nice custom but not practiced here as far as I know but it is possible that it is in some communities here.

@simone10 @Freelanzer I know the gypsies do this when their horse-trading but I didn't know other Irish people also follow the custom.

As far as I know, it is not practiced here. It would be nice if it was, though.

@JudyEv There are some really great people in the world. I know sometimes it doesn't seem that way.

@simone10 We met some lovely people along the way. Just when you were feeling a bit stressed someone would hop in to help or say a kind word.

I guess because we weren't expecting it, it gave us a really nice feeling. And $50 seemed quite an amount as he'd already dropped the price without much haggling.

It seems to be an Irish thing. I thought it was nice but we won't be doing it here.

I have not heard of this custom but it does seem a nice custom that would brighten the mood of anywhere it was practised.

@JudyEv It is amazing how far a little goodwill will spread, the ripples go out and we never know how many are blessed because of that first act of kindness.

It gave us a lovely warm feeling. He had already dropped the price a little and wouldn't take a deposit so we were pretty impressed.

Never for good luck, but as a promotion they might offer cash back to someone who finances a car for lots of money at a high rate of interest so that after they've signed a contract to pay lots of money to the finance company for many years they feel really happy that they are going home with a few hundred dollars in their pockets. Thus do to the banks make economic fools of us all.

We have plenty of that here too. Such a scam really.
