I was moving some stuff around from one part of the kitchen to the other this afternoon. Suddenly I heard a high pitched whistle sound. If you remember the old test patterns when tv went off the air back in the 50's and 60's you will know exactly what I mean. I thought perhaps the freezer got unplugged, "no", or carbon monoxide detector, smoke alarm "no, and no". I could hear it in both halves of the house. I heard it louder when I got up close to the metal wall furnace. If I bent at the waist and picked something up, I did not hear it down near the floor. It was not as loud outside, but I could hear it all the way around. I thought about getting in the truck and driving away to see if it was an outside alarm or malfunction. The sound was very high pitched and was making me dizzy. It did not seem to be bothering the cat. Maybe it was ringing in my ears--an infection? a brain tumor? Should I call the doctor? I went across the road to get the mail, then decided to look at my pedometer . . . It had blanked out all the steps for the day, the screen said "off". It is well over five years old and just chose to die at that time, but it would not shut up!!! When I would bend over my body muffled it. When I got close to the wall furnace it bounced off.Louder than ever. I did not have a screw driver to get the back off and remove the battery. So I left it outside. I felt a lot better then.

LOL, that is a funny story. I was in a bad car accident in 2001. I slid on some ice, bumped against the guard rails, hit oncoming traffic once or twice.. the truck I was driving was totalled, I've had neck problems ever since. When the vehicle finally stopped and things calmed down I could hear a sound. It was a weird sound, like the engine roaring or something. I turned the car off, but I still heard the sound. I got worried thinking the car was getting ready to explode or something. Turned out it was a book sitting in the front seat. It had a button you press and the button made a noise like a plane taking off because the book was about planes. It was my son's book, and something had hit it and was pressing the button so the sound didn't stop until I picked up the book.

In that situation it would really be scary. It is funny how battery operated things can just go off on you.

I can see how relieved that would make you feel that nothing serious was going on in the house. I hope you can get a new battery for it. Did you walk today?

Untraceable noises can be very irritating and we are constantly hunting for the source at all costs.

Glad you solved the mystery, haha. At least it had been loyal and served you well for over five years.

Yes, and it is time for a new one because it helps me be realistic about how much exercise I get.

Your pedometer should be upgraded to multiply(not calculate) the number of steps when one is scared. After all the steps counted have a relationship to one's breath as well.

I am sure it was a relief, both to find the cause and to stop the noise.
