Poor eyesight can be a real nuisance

Last night the bulb in the room that I use as an office blew, so I simply replaced it. The new bulb also went out about an hour later and changing that one made no difference. This morning I took the light fitting apart to find a wire had come loose. This was a simple matter of securing it to solve the problem, but it did not turn out quite that simple. The screws and holes for connecting the wire are extremely small and very difficult for me to see clearly. The fact that I was using step ladders certainly did not improve the chance either. It was like trying the thread a tiny needle while looking up at it at an angle. It took me almost one and a half hours for such a basic task, which I am still not certain is completely secure. It is times like this that I am reminded of just how poor my sight is.

But you do wear glasses and have your eyes checked once a year, right? New glasses when needed sure help. I didn't wear glasses until I was forty. The doctor listened to my complaint about not being able to see menus clearly and said, "Wait, you can't be..." My reply was "What, FORTY?" And so it goes.

Mine started at 43 @ElizabethWallace with just reading glasses then extended to bifocals. Now with cataracts...geez!

@ElizabethWallace I've never tried contacts; I don't like anything 'in' my eyes. Oh geez, an ulcer in the eyeball; I can't even imagine the pain of that. I do hate having to wear glasses; they are an inconvenience to me. I wanted Laser Surgery but my insurance company won't cover it because they consider it 'cosmetic'. Are you kidding me??? I'm not asking for a face lift; I want to be able to SEE.

@nanette64 My doctor told me he had bad news and good news. He said they would get worse every year, but there were glasses for that. I tried contacts for a few years, but developed an ulcer on my eyeball which was very painful and very dangerous. I wear glasses now. Bummer.

I would never try to fix something like that, too chicken to play with electricity... At my age my eyes are getting worse and I find driving at night almost impossible to do. I also keep a magnifying glass handy for small print.

There was no danger involved because I shut off all the power prior to stripping the fitment down. This was why I had to wait until today and could not do anything last night. I did feel like giving up after about 30 minutes and waiting until I returned home later, but decided that it was prudent to persevere rather than risk it going dark while I was out.

@painsonslate we are kindred spirits. I can't drive at night anymore and I'm nervous if I have to. I've added a magnifying glass to use even with my glasses on cause there are just some things I can't see anymore. I hate this as I always had good eyes and never needed glasses until I hit about 50 yrs old. Then it was just reading glasses.

@Marilynda1225 And so it goes. Our eyes and knees know how old we are no matter how well we take care of ourselves and how good we look.

Ditto. I find it impossible when the two prongs need to go back in my laptop wire as I can't see the dratted holes.

If I could have detached the wires and sat down to do the job carefully it may not have been too bad, but struggling on a stepladder was a farce.

@Asylum I send the teen up stepladders - perhaps you could borrow one for future stepladder use.

Welcome to the club of poor eyesight! I think as we age it is becoming more obvious. No fun.

Mine has been poor for a long time and with my current cataract problem it has been compounded.

@marlina I think there are many of us that could join the "poor eyesight" club

@Marilynda1225 That would definitely not surprise me, but I must be a founder member by now.

My eyes are getting worse and worse every day and some days I think my glasses need glasses

It is the glasses that I am most concerned about. When I have cataract surgery my sight will obviously improve, but I will still need glasses. However, I will be unable to acquire any until both eyes have been done and the sight has settled down.

For me, it would be a problem to have to look up at something like that. The top of my glasses is for distance, so I would have to be above something that small to see it clearly.

I also wear bifocals and encountered the same problem. This rather resulted in almost trying to do the job by feel, which is ridiculously difficult.

Most people have some issues with eyesight eventually, although mine has been poor for a long while.

@ElizabethWallace My eyesight was poor due to an infection many years ago, so the cataracts simply compounded the situation.

@Asylum My doctor told me if we live long enough, everyone gets cataracts. Blue eyed people get them sooner sooner. I have worn good sunglasses since I was a kid, so mine are super tiny and growing slowly despite my blue eyes.

Those with weak eyesight around here use magnifying glasses. Have you tried that?
@Asylum (47893)

I would definitely avoid that as much as possible.

@allknowing Yes, I understand that, but it would be even more difficult using a magnifying glass and trying to thread the wire with one hand.

@Asylum Only when it is absolutely necessary as in a situation that you have described.

@SIMPLYD No, I need to have cataracts removed which have now become quite severe.

@Asylum Then maybe it should be corrected for a higher grade of lenses .

I had the same problem with my night lamp about two weeks ago. I confirm that it's not easy to see the small screws and holes to connect the wire, even wearing glasses.

That would not have been too bad for me because at least I could have placed it in a convenient place. The light cable also had a habit on turning while iI was trying to thread the wire, which would not happen with a lamp.

Just be extremely careful @Asylum that the job you did is secure; otherwise a short could happen again and cause a fire.

I am not so confident that it is totally secure, but the light is only switched on while I am there.

You can often take off your glasses and carry on doing simple things without an issue, but as soon as you try to read a sign or watch television the difference is obvious.
