Catering Part-Time is Good, But....

November 25, 2015 10:15am CST
I've started a very, very part-time job with a local upscale catering company recently. When I say part-time, I mean VERY much so. I am low, low, low on their totem pole from their large pool of workers. I've now worked 4 times for them in a period of about 5-6 weeks. Honestly, the perfect amount would be about once a week. My schedule taking care of my children and running them to activities is pretty intense. The only downside is that it is hard to get acclimated to something doing it so infrequently. Also, each event is different from the next. I've done a 500 person cocktail party at a law firm, a 350 person luncheon at an art museum, a 500 plus person breakfast at an arts fundraiser, and a corporate sit down dinner for about 75. The sit down dinner for 75 was the most stressful. This company has high expectations for perfection which I understand. But, again, doing it so infrequently, I feel a bit nervous each time. I'm scheduled for a very small dinner this saturday of only 18 people. This one makes me the most nervous of all! Sounds silly, huh? But I figure it will be very low staffed. Which means lots of pressure to be perfect. Then a couple of days later I am working a dinner for a Ballet fundraiser thing. Then, knowing my luck, i won't work again for a couple of weeks. If I ever feel comfortable doing it, it will be great. If I ever get consistent calls, it will be great. It's funny how insecure and nervous I feel about serving food when I waited tables all through high school, college, and even after college.

I'm not sure the total number of their staff, but they probably have 100 or so employees.

That sounds like one day a week would be great. I understand how the smaller events might be more intimidating. You will do fine, I am sure.

It amazes me that you can find time for a little part time job with all that you do with your children. You'll catch on, and before long it will be routine for you.

@jillybean1222 By the time your really little ones can be left on their own a little more often, you'll be loving all of the events that you can work.

Maybe with the holidays coming you'll be called to work more. Sounds like it could be challenging to be on your feet for many hours during an event

Must be hard not exactly knowing when you are going to work or not and when to plan things.

@jillybean1222 I'm sure they will be calling you more often soon. As you said, you can always say you are busy if you don't want to work.

Each new thing has a learning curve. And it sounds like each gig is a new thing right now. I am sure it will get easier.
