San Calocero in Albenga on the Ligurian Riviera is the location of yet another Medieval witch's burial, recently uncovered, this one apparently follows the discovery close by of a 13 yr old girl, similarly buried as a witch. This recent one was burnt and thrown carelessly into a pit, then covered with heavy stone slabs, to prevent her from rising again, which was common practice with witches, and often bricks would be placed on their mouths, nailed or staked to the ground, or even decapitated and dismembered, to ensure they were no further danger. Both appear to have been buried between the 9th and 14th century.. so it wasn't just Britain who went witch hunting it seems. source: livescience

Alleged witches were persecuted throughout Europe and the Americas. My brother is an expert {PhD, books, TV shows} on witches in Europe ... it's fascinating stuff.

@bookbar I don't think so. How would I be able to moan about him if I thought he might read it?!

@Poppylicious That's pretty selfish, keeping all that stuff to yourself...but I see your point!

It's amazing isn't it that to these days and age, humans still kill fellow humans for their beliefs ..

I wonder what a 13 year old girl would do to entertain herself back then. Must have been pretty dramatic to have been picked up on the witchy cam.

It was a very superstitious era.

Seems everywhere was back then, post mortems on these skeletons show that they may only have suffered diseases like Scurvy or others that would now be treatable illnesses...

@bookbar I guess one thing that always puzzled me about the witch executions was how did they determine they were witches?

@just4him Probably the same way IS operate... no rhyme or reason, just wrong place wrong time and lots of finger pointing...

These were tough times but I'm not sure we've really progressed too much.

@JudyEv History has a frightening record of murderous deeds and events, but as you say ...have we progressed that much?...

@bookbar I think it is ignorance that sometimes makes people act the way they do. They don't understand/comprehend so become afraid of the unknown and lash out.

@bookbar apparently there was witch hunting going on everywhere. I am appalled at the treatment of these women and girls.
