My cat licking until it's raw

My one cat who I can't say I have a lot of issues with since I got him about 5 years ago. But lately he has been sort of stressed. But I kept tot he same routine I thought it may be the weather. I saw him today about a good hour licking his tummy non stop. I went and picked him up only to ssee it very red, and raw. I put some coconut oil on it, and when I get home from work witll find the cream I always use for the animals that the vet gave me (it works miracles). I hope it doesn't need a vet visit as I dont have much money right now but I would make do.
